So Nyuh Shi Dae fans have planned a special event for Hyoyeon's Birthday.

Funds from fans on So Nyuh Shi Dae's fan cafe, Hwasueunhwa, international site Soshified, and Chinese fansite SnsdChina - on the 22nd of September, which is So Nyuh Shi Dae member Hyoyeon's birthday - were collected (5,000,000 won) and donated to a food market located in Incheon, Kyeyang-gu.

The fans, who have been donating and participating in community service during each member's birthday, took into consideration that Hyoyeon hails from Incheon and decided to donate to a facility in that area. The food market is a facility that distributes basic foodstuffs to families in need.

Park Jongsook, who runs the food market, "The House that Opens Tomorrow," stated that, "the donations from So Nyuh Shi Dae fans will be able to help support around 300 families for 6 months. Since Chuseok is approaching soon, these donations will definitely allow the families in need to have a happier holiday," and thanked the fans that donated on Hyoyeon's behalf.

The fans then participated in community services around Incheon where they cleaned the houses of elderly individuals living alone. The fans also drew attention by putting up an advertisement in a daily newspaper wishing Hyoyeon a happy birthday.

this is extremely sweet and all, but i seriously fail to see how this is a birthday present to hyoyeon.

The donations are usually made in the name of the celebrity.
Since Incheon is where Hyoyeon is from it was only fitting to help out her home community.

i know, but hyo doesn't get any benefit from it.

she does knowing that a group of fans love her enough to raise all this money and contribute it to a good cause in *her* name.

even though she's a celebrity, she may not have the money to donate to such causes even if she supports them - but if fans can help her do it, then that's what makes it a gift.

it's not uncommon practice - celebrities have rejected their fangifts, anyway, and suggested their fans spend that money towards people in real need. yunho even made a public statement about it.

i still don't get it.
maybe i have to much of a selfish mind.

well think of it this way

in the past, celebs got tons of gifts that they didn't necessarily want or need. i think yunho was given several laptops all at once. what happens with these gifts? they get donated, anyway.

now the money is just sent directly to the charities that would receive material goods, and the charities themselves can decide what to do with it rather than take something already bought that they can't return if they don't actually need it themselves.

From: [identity profile] xshinebrighterx.livejournal.com
but i think idols do have needs too.
before i used to think that they were all rich and had anything they could possibly want, but lately with all the shit that has come out idk anymore.

From: [identity profile] hoyah.livejournal.com
well fans continue to give them gifts, anyway, they just don't do big birthday collections anymore

yeah, i get what the point is. and i know it's a common practice lately too. but a birthday present is usually to express how much you care from the birthday person.

even if it's in hyoyeon's name, those people who got the help aren't going to be grateful to hyoyeon, are they? I'm happy for the people who are getting the help but I just don't see how this is a present TO hyoyeon.

they have to be grateful to hyoyeon in a way, because it was her that motivated these fans to get together and collect all this money. without hyoyeon, there would be no hyoyeon fans, and without hyoyeon's fans there would be no gift.

I'm not sure if SNSD has ever said anything before, but a lot of stars ask their fans to donate to causes they support rather than get them gifts. I know Western actors like Zach Braff and Daniel Radcliffe have done that in the past.

western actors paychecks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> kpop idols' paychecks.
they have needs too, you know?
did you see how tiny kara's tv is?
or the article that said that the only decent computer jaebeom's family has is one that the fans gave him as a gift?

idols aren't exactly rotting on money and i'm sure they could use some material gifts themselves.

Well... they are doing a good deed in their name. Hyoyeon will definitely feel touched that her fans are helping the needy instead of just buying her tons of stuff she might already have/doesn't need.
If it were me, i will rather my fans not get me anything or donate to charity.

Date: 2009-09-22 02:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] visual-jaeho.livejournal.com
But they don't want materialistic gifts for themselves, yunho got like 20.000$ of gifts 2 years ago and he rejected everything, and asked the fans to stop sending expensive stuff that they don't need, and to use the money to help peoples in actual need, yoochun did the same. kpop idol don't have a big paycheck yes, but they still get lots and lots of free and sponsored high brands stuff.
I would be damn proud if i was hyeoyeon, and i'm sure she is. <3

I love that fans are doing charity work for birthdays instead of material good that usually get donated anyway.

Oh That's cute.
It's a great act.

It kinda reminds me of a My Wife and Kids, When Jay gave a goat to guy in Honduras as a present for Michael. Or something like that.

It's a beautiful gift. But I would be a hypocrite If I said I'd like if someone gave me a present like that.

&hearts That's REALLY awesome. Helping clean houses for the elderly is also fantastic. Shows you they really care, you know? Instead of just giving money and then forgetting about it. It's loverly. Soshi fans honestly give GREAT presents. Like Taeyeon's Frankenstein; not just shiny gadgets, but things that are fun and random and cute. IDK, it's nice to hear about fans doing nice things for people, as opposed to threatening.

I honestly think Sones is a great example of how a fanclub can actually put their power in numbers and all that effort into doing something GOOD instead of stupid like boycotts. I'm actually not embarrassed to be a SNSD fan ;-;V
