Idol turned actress falls victim to phone scam losing 50 million

On March 21st, Lee Hae In, actress and former member of Gangkiz reported being scammed for approximately 50 million won through voice phishing. Lee Hae In told the police that she received a phone call that told her she needed to strengthen her bank security system and protect her personal information. The phone call told her to visit a website to fix these issues.

The caller prompted Lee Hae In to enter her bank information at the website, which was identical to that of a regular bank website. The actress proceeded to do so and saw 25 million, 15 million, and 10 million dollars being withdrawn from her account while she was still on the phone.

When she questioned the withdrawals, Lee Hae In was reassured by the caller that they were just a result of an error in the system and that her money would be returned in 10 minutes. However, when she could not get in touch with the caller after that, the actress panicked because she needed the money for the deposit on her new home she will be moving into.

Police investigations are currently underway as they try to find the caller and return the money to Lee Hae In.

My family used to get phone calls pretending to be our isp provider saying we have a virus on our computer and to go a website etc. which I knew was a scam

I always tell everyone especially my parents as anyone can fall for these scams.
People just need to be made more aware of these things.

I hope she gets her money back but who knows, it might be too late.

Same, I used to work at a public library and teach old people how to use the internet. I had to tell them repeatedly not to open spam email. I feel like most people under 40 know not to give out their passwords and bank account numbers. I feel bad and hope they catch the criminals.

I was the victim of credit card fraud 10 days ago which is the worst. I received a couple of warning texts asking me if I had made those payments at 3am and 4am, which I hadn't, and so I was a nervous wreck waiting for my bank's office hours. I called to cancel my credit card and then I had to wait 48h to see if they had succeeded. And they did. They got 500€ worth of clothes and jewelry. Ugh. I didn't have 500€ on my account so of course I was in the red. I had to transfer a big enough sum to get me back in positive members + still be able to pay my bills which were going to be automatically paid the next day + still have enough for groceries.

Let's just say I am currently broke... And even though I got my new credit card, I can't use it! I went to do my groceries, for which I was very late so there were a lot, and my card wouldn't work! Embarrassing. Thank God I had something else to pay. Turns out, even though I had money on my account, because they made so many purchases and of such big amounts, I cannot use my credit card to make any payment till next month!

So I am broke and running out of food (as well of toilet paper TT) and I am stuck until I can use it again because I don't even have enough pocket money to buy myself a metro ticket.

Also paperwork is a bitch. And did I mention I was currently unemployed with 0 income?

Uuugh, I feel your pain. Hope it's resolved promptly! Can you talk to your bank about the problems this has caused you; see if they can speed up the process, or give you a temporary overdraft on a different account or something?

if it's fraud your bank should be willing to help you reverse it and open a cyber crime case on it though. Bank of America always gives you back your money for that :((((

I'm not in the US though. For now I filled in some papers and I guess we'll see after that.
I'm going to the bank today so they can at least lift the opposition on my credit card because I can't last another day like this.
