This song is such a jam~ I liked Yasisi (and oh god, I'm so in love with her in the MV) a lot but this is just smooth and fun and I love it.
There was this one commenter who was always really gross about Yoonji in the comments of her live perfs though, hopefully they aren't around this time :/
i love yoonji so much that i can't even hate the idea of this being about being a "wifey" and the semi-sexist undertones of her staying at home waiting for her husband/boyfriend to come home.........
at least she's clearly acting tongue-in-cheek about it, with her obviously not being at home, wearing silly tracksuits, messing about the house when she is at home, and the way she's laughing at the book on "how to be a perfect woman".
(or i'm just reading too deeply into it..............)
but in any case she looks great, the song is cute, and i love how the bridge contains mentions to the reason i became a witch, if you love me & yasisi ♥ yoonji is a queen
Because i don't see how it is "sexist as fuck". At least the parts she's singing. Or really MC mong's parts, but since he's a guy i guess i can see how some might see it.
yes! a wife is your wife. there's nothing sexist about being a wife. "i wanna be your wife" is perfectly fine??? i mean it wouldn't scan in the song of course, but as a concept it's fine; it implies they're in a relationship and she wants to be with him forever. that's lovely.
"wifey" is the name a term given to (mostly) long-time (devoted) girlfriends of assholes who sleep around (with the wifey being the one girl they're "most likely to marry"). apparently (this whole idea is sexist too....) the girls they sleep with will compete to take the "wifey's" spot and become the favoured girl of their man. these guys are possessive of their "wifey" and will hardly ever let her have male friends in case they take her away, or she enjoys their company more than his own. he is possessive of her even though he cheats on her with other women; clearly the rules do not apply to him, for he is a man. the whole concept of a "wifey" is seen through the lens of a man. he's possessive of her and he loves her for her traditional "wifely" attributes, which is why she will always come out on top over the "slutty" girls (the ones he cheats on her with, who are deemed "sluts" from the mere act of helping him cheat on his girlfriend). inevitably he will remember her as the best candidate and he will give up on his cheating ways to propose to her--if she hasn't left. if she has left he'll chase her and beg her to come back, because she is his wifey.
"i wanna be your wifey", although presumably meant as "i want to be your wife/long-term girlfriend", could be very much seen as buying into the idea of competition between women for their desired man, buying into gender stereotypes, buying into the idea of the girl he cheats on his girlfriend with wanting to get rid of the girlfriend.
a "wifey" is not just a cutesy term for a girlfriend/wife. if it was there would be nothing wrong with it. unfortunately, it has a whole lot of negative connotative baggage that goes with it, and this is why i find it sexist. i'm not suggesting that they used it knowing it's sexist, but good intentions don't make it not.
Ahh so if they just said "I wanna be our Wife" instead of Wifey you'd feel better about it? I can appreciate that.
I don't find anything sexist about the rest of the song though, since she wants to be his wife. There aren't any lyrics that seem to denote a competition or the meaning of wifey you have, but like you said they might not have known.
yeah i would have had no issue with that :) it's just the one word that let it down for me
i didn't think that they used it knowingly and i didn't think there'd be any issue with the rest of the song, which is why i still find it cute. it just bothered me.
