Producers of the popular “Reply” drama are once again in talks over the series’ third season, this time set in the year 1988.

On January 12, a drama representative revealed to Daily Sports, “Producer Shin Won Ho’s next drama will be a part of the “Reply” series with 1988 as the background.”

“As has been mentioned before, there was a lot of conflict in choosing between 2002 and 1988. However, it has been decided that 1988 will be a better fit, and the staff is now in preparation for the upcoming show,” the representative said. “Its estimated airing date will be around July, after ‘Heart to Heart.’”

The news come after the art director of “Reply 1994,” Seo Myung Hye, threw out a few hints about “Reply 1988” in a recent interview with Women News.

Following reports that claimed the upcoming season has been confirmed, tvN stepped forward to clear up any misunderstandings. A representative of the cable channel said, “‘Reply 1988′ is one of the projects under consideration. Nothing has been decided yet, and our stance on the issue changes constantly. It is an overstatement to say that we are in any stages of production.”

Talks of “Reply 1988” have already surfaced once before. Although it seemed that a few agencies were arranging meetings with the staff, the production got cancelled for an unknown reason.

Last year, producer Shin Won Ho said, “Although we discussed about many different factors, production has been stopped due to current circumstances. We are going to have to wait and watch the situation for a little longer. ‘Reply 1988′ isn’t really confirmed yet. It might take a while because we might have to start from a clean slate again.”

Three months have passed since and rumors of the production of “Reply 1988” are surfacing once again.

There will be a lot of subjects to reach with 1988 as the background. Internationally, it was an era of prosperity for China and Hong Kong’s cinema market due to actors such as Leslie Cheung, Chow Yun Fat, and Joey Wong.

From a domestic standpoint, there will be a large chance that singers like Cho Yong Pil, Lee Moon Sae, Kim Wan Sun, Lee Sun Hee, and Byun Jin Sup will appear. “College Music Festival” winner, Shin Hae Chul, will also most likely be referenced.

Socially, the Seoul Olympics, Ji Kang Hun’s hostage situation, and the infamous MBC “News Desk” incident in which a man jumped in screaming, “There is a tap in my ear,” are all events that the current generation is well aware of.

“Reply 1997” from 2012 and “Reply 1994” from 2013 have both been big hits and led to the rising fame of many new faces. Both received compliments for being well-made dramas, displaying strong acting even from less experienced actors.

Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa Confirmed to Reunite for “Reply 1988"

The phenomenal “Reply” series is finally returning this year with another season!

A representative of tvN revealed on March 17, “We are planning to air ‘Reply 1988‘ sometime in the second half of the year. The exact broadcast period has not been decided yet.” The production team is currently working on the script for the drama.

Earlier today, producer Shin Won Ho shared that “Reply 1988″ will be a family drama set in the year 1988. Slightly stepping away from the original format, the director hopes to focus on the heart-warming stories of diverse families, and plans to take inspiration from the MBC drama “Three Families Under a Roof,” which enjoyed huge popularity in the 80s.

While the casting is still ongoing, Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa have already been cast for the drama. This will mark their third time to act together as a married couple in another season of the “Reply” series.

Meanwhile, producer Shin Won Ho and scriptwriter Lee Yoo Jung are the creators of hit series “Reply 1997” and “Reply 1994,” which can be accounted for the breakthroughs of talented actors like Seo In Guk, A Pink‘s Jung Eun Ji, Go Ara, and Jung Woo.

Aren't they doing an American version of the Reply series? (Brokered by that company that's always getting the rights for cruddy American remakes of Korean IPs?)

They should do reply to 1989 so they can cover my birth and all the joy I brought to the world since them.

Plus when they flash forward to 1995 they can use the footages of me dancing to é o tchan and the spice girls.

They chose 1988 because that's when Lee sun he's revolutionary life changing album came out that changed the pop music world. No but seriously that album has the biggest hit of her career on it they better play it in the bg throughout the whole series. I will be very happy if one of the characters is an Lee sun hee fan. Plz make it happen (I can play it).

I'm just here for the parents tbh. I'm glad that this is not going to have the same format as the old ones. The series needs a fresh idea

seconding the person above, reply 1997 is much better than the dragged out mess that 1994 became towards the end.

So which young, not well known guy will get a chance this time? Which idol from a relatively known group? Or maybe changing the concept will change the casting and they will settle with actors only? I don't care, I just wan't a lot of girls, 94' was too much of a sasuage fest, I need great, well rounded, widely appreaciated young female performance;D

idk, reply 1994 became such a mess towards the end. it was too long and the female character was terribly written and had no development ugh. if this is more like reply 1997 then I might watch.
