Article: Do you know the 'law of 3 minutes' on music shows?

Source: X Sports News via Naver

Article breaks down the 3 minute rule on music shows where singers are only given 3 minutes to show everything they have. The time is determined by the popularity/power of that artist. They use Amber as an example as someone who got over 3 minutes on all three public broadcast music shows while another mid-tier company girl group had to have their song cut to under 3 minutes despite being a senior group.

One insider said, "There is even a team that quit promoting altogether because they couldn't even get 3 minutes. The producers have to take into consideration what the audience wants to see and the viewer ratings so they asked the group to cut their song to under 2 minutes and they just quit promoting altogether. They basically lost in the power game."

-

1. [+321, -7] There are so many songs that are over 4 minutes long but music shows keep cutting them down to fit their time slot. They should instead be cutting out the MC talks and try to squeeze in as much of the performances as possible.

2. [+200, -12] Even unpopular rookie groups will perform two songs as long as they're from a good company...

3. [+114, -5] Music was cut back in the '90s too.. whether it was ballad or dance, it didn't matter. I'd rather shows cut back on the amount of performers than cut down the song times.

4. [+36, -0] Seriously hate it when songs are cut;;; Why can't they cut back on the embarrassing MC talks and just let us listen to the songs as they were meant to be... I hate it when popular senior groups get their songs cut because they're not from a huge company ㅠㅠㅠ

5. [+38, -11] I don't care as long as huge groups that lip sync are kept off the shows like EXO, that backdancer group.

6. [+17, -2] They'd have more than enough time if they didn't waste time on giving opening slots to groups that aren't going to make it anyway.

7. [+13, -0] You can definitely tell when songs are cut to fit the 3 minute rule. No intro, straight into the second verse... it ruins the flow. Just get rid of the MCs and let us listen to the music~

So you have to promote to get famous but you can't fully promote if you're not already famous...

that group is rainbow, right? though I don't know if they had to cut their songs before they suddenly stopped promoting

ikr, is that even real? they all lipsync?

they do lip sync a lot tbh, but they are dying one by one, so I can't hate.

omg right!
I still think they're adjusting, but it's been a few years since they debuted now :/

when they perform live their really good, I honestly just think between the over work and the group changes it's messed their development up, and their ridiculous choreos too.

THIS!! I mean I'm so disgusted by how much they push them.
Of course at some point the boys break.

that's a shame, but I guess we can't have perfect stage perf and perfect singing; SNSD are a pretty good example of that even after so many years..

I'm against cutting altogether, but idk what seniority has to do with anything. Charting is the only thing that should matter if they're going to end up cutting songs. So uhhhh sorry rainbow

and the biggest nugus usually get cut to 2,5 minutes

that part about rainbow tho :(

Eh I don't mind if bigger groups didn't get multiple comeback stages if it means nugus get to perform. Music shows are one of their only chances to be on tv.

For once I agree with neizens. They should really cut the MC, they bring absolutely nothing, they're just embarrassing.

they'd be lucky to even get exo booked in to come on their shows tbh, that's where most/more of their views come from

The only thing I like about the MC's are the gifs I get of Minho being a cute cutie weekly.

Actually, those gifs were what made me FINALLY give Shinee a shot....and that gif where I fell in love with Jonghyun, but whatever different story...lol.

Sometimes cutting REALLY butchers the song, it's like "wtf, where did that part come from?!".
I think generally cuts are unavoidable, you will always have popular cookies and the ones barely breathing, but yeah, some MCs shenanigans should go away for good...
Also it must be really pissing of for some nugus to get 2,5 minute and put 120%/all heart in it and then see some more popular groups with 2 songs for like more than 5 minutes when first is often horrible boring, filler and nobody even tries with it.

From: [identity profile] hyungmoney.livejournal.com
Hmmmm idk, I'm usually only watching live performances for the visuals so the run time of the songs never really bother me. I also don't mind all the performances because it gives me a chance to find new groups/people to like, but if there is a gateway in cutting MC time I'm all for that too.

I wondered if they made that song so short just so it wouldn't get cut on music shows. (And I still want a way longer remix of it.)

Compared to past programs there are way too many nugus in these programs nowadays. PDs should just do hard decision and stop letting all these nugus from small companies into music shows. Maybe nugu companies would then stop debuting new groups and older nugus would disband and oversaturation of kpop market would finally end and hallyu would improve.

"PDs should just do hard decision and stop letting all these nugus from small companies into music shows."

Except most of the time the lesser known groups have better songs + stage presence + generally put in more effort into their performances making them 10000 times more enjoyable to watch than some groups from bigger companies. Of course this is all subjective and no PD would be sitting around deciding who's more worthy of being on a music show which nobody but kpop fans watch.

Thing is that before wave of nugu groups, there were a lot more establsihed non idol artists in these shows and they got higher ratings ('cause also people who aren't into idols watched them), and the programs in general were a lot more enjoyable as everyone got to perform their whole song ('cause fewer slots) and there was still time for MC parts.

It seems to me like there is way more ballads and hiphop on the digital charts (which presumably are a better reflection of the general public) than there is on the music shows. Yoon Mi Rae's Angel slayed on the digital charts for two months, and they couldn't get a spot on the music shows (Tiger mentioned it on twitter)

this x10000000

I've been so unimpressed with some major acts lately. SM especially seems to be barely putting any effort into it. Music shows are also how I discover nugu groups/lesser known ones. Nearly all of my stan groups now are non-big 3.

Some netizenbuzz posters suggested maybe a special all-nugu show which might be a good compromise

I never really kept up with those, so I wasn't sure, but makes sense. I seem to recall seeing more rookie group stages on those.

poor rainbow i already miss them :( i agree about cutting down on mc time. i only watch the shows for the performances, they could talk less and let the groups ect have a longer performance

Honestly, music shows have lost their appeal to me many years ago. Most performances seem so robotic and all groups are looking the same. and of course, there is the lip syncing as well.

To 'show everything they have'? Honestly most performances are the exact damn same except for clothing. They bring nothing new unless its their debut performance on the show. Then it should be cut more off...but that's what they usually already do.

Well...that brings to the CURRENT Issue:

Fiestar gets cut to 2.5 mins while rookie G Friends gets their full time :(
I do understand that G Friends are popular rookies and that's probably why the producers made this decision. They are thinking of how to get the most views and please the majority.

poor rainbow preparing opening songs and no one letting them do it.... they deserve better than this shit when SM can buy 9 minutes of doodooass airtime for whoever theyre shilling that week
