This is the last week in August, and today is on the 25th. The weather is still hot at daytime, but wind is blowing hard at night.
The cold air surrounding gives an earnest autumn feel.
When I first listened to “COLORS ~ Melody & Harmony ~” at Tokyo DOME concert, it was still in summer…
With the dizzying flows of daily life around me, on the streets during nightfall, I walked in a fast pace while was listening to “COLORS”.
“Such a good song…” with earphones on, I appreciated the song in one-syllable word. The song contains a deep mind of two young men which was put into one song.
On the way to the studio, I stopped at a nearby flower shop and my eyes caught the figure of blooming white rose flowers inside the shop. The small roses somehow meets the soft smooth melody of the song and they’re like calling each other affectionate feelings. Without another thought, I bought two roses.
When I arrived at the studio, there were two men who was having photoshoot in white background. Their face turned into soft smile when they spotted two white roses in my hands, and they said.
“Wow, who would receive that gift?” (Yuchun)
“Ohh.. (sighs) why are you having flowers? Is it today’s fashion theme? Great” (Jejung)
They have learned how to do occasional teasing and joke towards the adults. That’s become their form of communication. In last concert at MC part, they even made fun of each other among the members, by that way, fans can have a closer feeling with them.
“While I was walking and listening to “COLORS”, I suddenly meet this snow flowers and the image of this flowers just match you two people. That’s why I bought them.” The face of them suddenly turned into surprises as I handed them the flowers which I brought.
Towards the camera, the two men handed their flowers. To the camera across them, somehow I can heard the voice of them saying “Thank you”.
This is a song that you have to use the entire heart and feeling when you’re listening to it.
JJ: Now let’s start the interview~
YC: please!
- This is the first time we meet since Tokyo Dome? You guys look healthy (laughs)
YC: I’m healthy! yeah yeah
JJ: It’s good. How are you?
- I’m good as well. Since Tokyo Dome concert it’s been a month already. Time flies so fast.
YC: It’s really fast, I’m shocked myself. But I still can clearly remember the pleasure we had in Tokyo Dome. When I see the packed seats filled with penlights, it’s pretty impressive.
JJ: Nervous… I had such kind of feeling before, but the view of penlights was really impressive that gave my tension slowed down. I felt warm, therefore I tried to lessen a little excessive power in me, so that I was able to do the live without stress. Even one person’s mind was really important at that time. Everyone that was really close to us giving a warm feeling as if we’re not alone in the hall.
- It’s really great. There was a surprise from audiences at encore part. At one point, all the red penlights turned down and they lighted up the white penlights, isn’t it?
YC: Blue. Blue and blue. It’s not white, it’s blue.
- Oh it was blue. Okay, blue it is (laughs)
JJ: I’ve been really forgetful these days as well (laughs)
- It’s a joke (laughs). Didn’t you surprise?
JJ: I did. I had no idea about that thus I was really surprised. It was beautiful. I’ve never been that shocked before. In the depth of our mind, was left the impression when we sang “Love in The Ice” as double encore. We did sing this song too last year, but I never expected that this year when we’re singing it again, as I looked around, I would see a lot of people cried. I felt touched at that time to see how the song could made people cried like this. I think it’s a really great time.
YC: I saw the face of a person who cried and I felt truly thankful from my heart. I said “thank you” several times when I was singing. The performance became a truth solemn scene.
How bout you, in which song you feel impressed?
- “Bolero”. I’m so impressed with the overwhelming power in the song. When I was listening to it, tears unconciously fell down.
JJ: Which part of the concert do you like?
- I like the medley dancing performances of “Purple Line” and “MIROTIC”. At that time I was so greedy that I wanted to see “Rising Sun” performance as well.
YC: It will kill us! (laughs)
JJ: Ha ha ha Yuchun, actually the timing would be great (to continue to “Rising Sun” performance). It will turn exquisite. But if we really do that, it’s really evil! That dancing part requires most physical power already and if we have to continue to perform “Rising Sun” as well, I’m so dead!
YC: But it’s really cool, we’d be happy if we could show you such a long highlights of Tohoshinki like that.
- Junsu’s force resurrected completely as well in the Dome.
JJ: It’s Tohoshinki style to always think the possibility of giving a perfect example of live performance.
YC: Junsu with the injured leg trying to dance on stage, he didn’t complain. He did everything all alone.
JJ: It was tough. When we’re five together, that’s the only possibility of us showing the best dance, it’s been a force within ourselves.
- Each member has solo song, how you guys to pick solo song for each member?
JJ: We picked a song that was composed specially for Dome concert and is going to be released soon, “COLORS ~ Melody & Harmony~”. Meanwhile Yunho and Junsu each performed their self-composed song which were performed in “Asia Tour MIROTIC Concert” we’d been proceeding at that moment, and Changmin solo was taken from previous published TRICK single project “WILD SOUL”.
“WILD SOUL” was performed in live band format and Changmin’s enormous impression was really different from his original character. This song was also released in South Korea. “WILD SOUL” is the first single from TRICK project.
JJ: You don’t know this? Hah…. (sigh) we run out love! So, do you know what is my single for the couple title TRICK?
- Huh? was it Mezo…?
JJ: No! It’s Maze!
YC: Ha ha ha yeah. That reminds me when our last single ‘Stand by U’ was out with the coupling song “Tea for Two”. People just simply mixed them up and called it “Tea For U”.
JJ: You’re not very good with the english titles!
YC: But in saying that, you always forget song titles (laughs)
JJ: Well I guess so…
- Ha, you can’t judge people! (You can’t correct me)
JJ: (laugh to escape from the situation, lol)
YC: Do you still know the title of our new song?
- Of course I know (laughs). It’s “COLORS ~ Melody & Harmony ~”
YC: Okay now, what is the title of another track in the single?
- What an attack question (laughs). It’s “SHELTER”
JJ: and “SHELTER” means?
- A hideout? I have no confidence to answer this, I’m afraid that I would reveal a wrong meaning.
Jaejoong: Do you have a shelter?
- No. But bathroom and toilets are shelters. (laughs)
Jaejoong: Bathroom is bathroom. Toilet is toilet.
-Well… yeah. Yu, Cha, how about jaejoong? (Interviewer made a mistake with names here)
Jaejoong: Jaejoong? Who is jaejoong? (cry- laugh) Ahhhh…(covers hands with face) So mean… (laughs) Now you’ve even got my name wrong…
Yoochun: Hahahahahaha (loud laugh) But I understand. If you try not to make a mistake, you make a mistake. Anyway, I don’t have a shelter~ How about you Jaejoong?
Jaejoong: I do~
Yoochun: REALLY!? Really? Where?
Jaejoong: If I tell you it wouldn’t be my secret shelter any more, would it~ (laughs)
[T/N: Jaejoong was like a playful little girl == 言ったら隠れ家になくなっちゃうじゃあ～ん]
Yoochun: Where? Where? Where?
- Drums? (laughs)
[T/N: Doko=where, is an onomatopoeia for drums]
Yoochun: Drums? (laughs) Where, wherewhere~?
Jaejoong: No, I’m not tellingggg ~~~ ♪
Yoochun: TELL ME! Where! (brings out body)! I really REALLY want to know? Where? Wherewhere? Tell me later by mail! I’ll text you~
- Okay, that’s enough talks already (LOL). And why was Changmin’s song taken from TRICK project?
JJ: Changmin has a voice that as high as female voice, and he’s aiming to sing different song for the Japan concert, since “WILD SOUL” sounds to match his wish, that’s why it’s picked.
- The DOME concert will have a live DVD which will be released at the same day with you guys’ single.
JJ: I’m happy with that. You can watch the figure of Tohoshinki who was enjoying the live a lot. We’re so delighted with the DOME live. It’s amusing.
YC: Jejung hyung truly love the DOME concert, but when we had the last stage in Nagoya, he was continuously saying sorry to the audiences.
JJ: Yeah, I felt so sorry. The feeling of tour was going to end appeared in Nagoya that I thought I was going to cry.
- Can I ask more about the new single “COLORS”? How’s the demo of this song created?
JJ: at first, when we made our lastest album (The Secret Code), we already in process of making a track whose base is the arrangement of this song. However, when the arrangement was already completed, but the melody is not yet finished. Then at the end the whole concept of the album was decided and I had to say that it’s better not to put the song in the album at that time (since the song doesnt match the album concept). But then at Tokyo Dome, finally this song could be proceed properly and we tried to perform!
YC: The lyrics was done with help from HUB. HUB is one who also writes the lyrics for our most recent single “Tea for Two”, he’s a lyricist whom we put our respect on. The lyrics is written in a true grateful feeling. The lyrics of this song exactly speaks the things in our mind. It’s a chance for us to convey our love to all fans. This is a song whose lyrics speaks about love.
JJ: With the pretty smooth lyrics, we could express bight and hopeful feeling when we’re singing.
YC: I like the part “Even for one second, we’d like to stop all the tears in the world and turns them into smiles”
JJ: But I think if it’s only for 1 second, it’s really short! (suddenly laugh out loud). 1 second is just like when someone blows out a candle, 1 second is deinitely too short. It’s a little yearning.
Yuchun: Ha ha ha what’s with “yearning” it’s unconvenience to use, isn’t it? Please use more proper Japanese.
- Ha ha ha but alright I know what you mean it’s hard to laugh for only 1 second.
JJ: Yes, it’s like that….
YC: Yeah, as we become an adult, we learn how to laugh only on the surface, but not from the whole heart. It’s somehow painful.
JJ: Is it… it’s a way to represent the expression of heart… HUB is really a great guy. Brilliant! well understood.
- So this 1 second matter, is it the highlight of the song?
JJ: Personally for me, I rather ask you to feel the overall flow of the song and use your heart when listening to it.
YC: I like the first part. The very beginning when the harmony flows pretty high.
- How was the singing parts decided?
YC: We just name it. It’s like… this part is better to be sung by Jejung, something like that.
- I heard that the jacket also fixes with the song.
YC: Yes. There is black-white version with our eyes closed, it means the night time, we’re sleeping. While the other one with our eyes opened, it means daytime.
- Jacket image seems to be significant in representing the song.
JJ: I think so.
- What is an impressive story of CD jacket experience you have?
YC: For me, it’s at the first album, I like the atmosphere when making for “Heart, Mind and Soul”. My face at that time I think was the best, right now, I’m already old (laughs)
JJ: ha ha ha Yuchun still looks hot even till now. I have to say it’s “Summer Dream” jacket making (that is the most impressive).
Junsu came towards our manager and said “Look at me, why they’re ugly?”
The manager tried to explain to him, “It’s because everyone has to jump that cause them to be not in a well-balanced, Junsu picture is definitely the most fabulous.” with that explanation, Junsu replied back “I know that… don’t blame me for not being ugly.” (laughs)
YC: ha ha ha it is really like that! Junsu is indeed interesting (laughs). But in “Choosey Lover” when my hair was too short, I don’t want to look like that anymore, it’s all because Junsu (laughs)
JJ: Another memory for me was at the jacket shoot taken for “My Destiny”. It had a very nice atmosphere. The impression of that time still remains in my mind.
- Okay, so for now how about if we hear some story about the PV?
YC: The story is about two people wandering on streets that has no colors.
- How’s the process of composing “SHELTER”?
JJ: I did the arrangements, I created it with help from Junsu’s melody configuration. The lyrics was written by Yuchun and HUB.
YC: It’s so different from Tohoshinki particular songs. It’s so fresh and cool! The type of Jejung’s musicality is really exposed in this song, the song has slightly dark impression, but the lyrics is totally in contrast.
JJ: The content of the lyrics is, “the world of mine, is a place where there is you.”
- Really manly.
YC: Yes. We’re aging to be adults now, so the song has to match the age too (laughs). The lyrics is about a love system. You don’t know me, but I love the feeling of your existence.
JJ: The impression which the man likes unilaterally. Would like to find out whether it’s you are my shelter. I don’t know whether it’s a little scary or not (laughs)
YC: it sounds sexy, dangerous. For this song, there’s no PV, but when we composed this song, Jejung managed to make a PV of it. Jejung really has a great sense, the PV was a little dark gloomy PV and it looks really stylish. It’s really a good work.
- Really. When you two are writing lyrics, how do you recall the inspiration?
YC: I wrote lyrics based on experience.
JJ: I’m thinking more to the song’s feeling.
- Yeah. In “wasurenaide” you can feel a lot of sensitivity side of Jejung, meanwhile for Yuchun’s “Kiss~”, the feeling is something a person can really feel in his/her ownself.
JJ: Indeed. People tends to call the song only “Kiss~” but do you know the complete title of the song?
YC: You forget?! I’m hurt (laughs). It’s not that the song is already too old… (tears)
- I know! it’s “Kiss The Baby Sky!”
YC: Very good. So what kind of song is that?
- Huh? Isn’t it a song of dream? Trying to work hard on your dream… (trying to recall)
YC: Yes. It’s a very good song.
JJ: really really amazing one.
- I think you have been working really hard on Japanese
JJ: ha ha ha we had trouble in studying Japanese for the first time laughs). At that time we’re really not good in conversation.
The subject of title song Endlessly Sweet arises
- Oh yes, it’s difficult really. So next.. it’s the song which you both performed at Zepp Tokyo on September 20th.
YC: We appeared as a unit in Sakazaki Konoseuke’s Odaiba Folk Village Deluxe live event, there were Fumiya Fujii, Kazufumi Miyazawa (THE BOOM), Tachibana Keita (W-inds), etc.
To have a live together with different usual members, we really received high response.
The distance of seats from stage was so comfortable for us to have a live and the atmosphere was good as well.
But unlike the usual, even in DOME when I wasn’t really familiar with the environment, I didn’t feel nervous at all to sing there. But for this event, I felt so much tension!
JJ: We sang “COLORS~”, this song is soft and comfortable which made me completely relax. Eventhough we’re still lack of practicing it.
- Ha ha ha you dare to keep on modest, amazing. I heard that you also participated in m-flo tribute album released on September 16th.
YC: Yes, yes. We sing “Been So Long”
- Why did you pick “Been So Long”?
YC: this is m-flo’s debut song, which is unlike our usual song. Wouldnt it be awesome to sing a different atmosphere song? But frankly, the recording was really difficult.
JJ: Tohoshinki never have a song that has so many rap parts in it. The part which LISA (m-flo female singer) sings, is really difficult to follow her key note. There are opinios that we might better to sing ‘LOT’ (T/N: another m-flo song, Love Or Truth), but ‘LOT’ has almost the same type of song Tohoshinki usually perform, so we consider “Been So Long” to have more fresh image.
- And on September 23rd, will be released a song from 5 members for Pinky CM “Endlessly Sweet”. But as for now it only can be downloaded from download service only.
JJ: yeah, it’s a very good song. The song will air a lot in TV in the mid of September.
YC: The title “Endlessly Sweet” really gives an impression that is a song about hope.

“Oh~ it was such fun. Eh, I laughed a lot during this interview, I’m good, but is it okay for an interview like this?” (laughs) – Yuchun
- Oh? for talking a lot?
“Was it an interview? Mmmm… speaking while am drinking really makes me feel relaxed. Oh no, it’s joke, joke” (laughs) – Yuchun
“Jenga is also fun, we play the games together as well. Oh? we can’t play it now? sorry sorry” – Jejung.
After the main photographing ended, the sub-editor in charge was preparing Jenga and Jejung and Yuchun suddenly had more fun that we had expected in playing the game.
Compared to Yuchun who started the game by thinking carefully about the balance of the blocks, “Even if I take only one of this block, it definitely will collapse!”, Jejung wasn’t that patient and quickly took one block out and in result making the whole blocks collapsed. Bad Jejung.
“It was too fast!” (Yuchun)
I should say that Jejung and Yuchun got loud laughter together. Their eyes were circled up staring at the Jenga to find blocks that were not matched up.
Going on, this time, they simply put all the jenga blocks on floor and started to play dominoes (^^;;) But even this was not done properly as the blocks were collapsing at Yuchun side before they reached to the end.
Now they split the Jenga into two, and Yuchun piled up jenga blocks very high. Yuchun was mimicking Jejung’s expression.
However, Jejung is somehow better for this time. He’s stacking height of the blocks, however watching Jejung was succeed, Yuchun started to strike with jokes and as Jejung replied on him, his blocks tree went down.
After a moment of silence, these two men began to laugh out loud.
In contrast with their mature image, the two people really did laugh a lot. I never think that their smiling face ever changed since the first time I met them. Having such busy days like them, they have ability to turn even little things into something fun. Their smiling expression is not something that is made of, it really shows the face of someone who is really happy.
It’s a tremendous job. With the smiling face of them now, they created a song that makes even more people to be able to laugh. It’s a hope from the heart.
