Pann: How female celebrities are treated on set

Pann talks about how advertisers will abuse their power over celebrities, especially female celebrities, by treating them like sexual objects.

Hyori talks about a particular incident that enraged her where she was shooting a CF that required her to drink some water and the producer was like, "Hyori-ssi, how about you drip some of that into your cleavage?!"

Another incident was when an actress arrived at the film set and the producers asked for a nude scene that she was never informed of and when she refused, they were like, "You took your clothes off for tons of other movies, what's wrong with you..."

1. [+103, -1] Hearing that really would piss you off;;

2. [+96, -3] I don't find anything wrong with celebrities complaining about things like this

3. [+62, -0] That's why I find celebrities to have such strong mentalities. I don't think just any average person can last a day in the industry. Imagine being sold as a product in front of your family, friends, and relatives.

4. [+42, -0] You also have to consider that they're celebrities with a top name already and they still get treated like that. Imagine how much worse no-name stars have it. Anyone who's actually worked in society knows that there are some things you just have to put up with for the sake of the work environment... and it's people like these advertisers that abuse that.

5. [+41, -0] Well, in the eyes of advertisers, celebrities are just products, nothing more or less

6. [+37, -1] So many assholes in the world... embarrassing as a fellow man

7. [+34, -0] I find actresses who do nude scenes even stronger mentally. Imagine having to be nude in front of dozens of staff and moaning like you're actually doing it and then having that entire scene on a wall sized theater for your parents to see.

8. [+31, -1] That's harassment ㅋ

9. [+26, -1] Celebrities on the outside seem like such a cool career with all the glitz and glam but I often question whether they are really dancing or singing or acting because they want to. I wouldn't be able to dance in all those sexy clothes singers are always given, especially thinking that my family could see..

10. [+26, -0] Ugh... people who say stuff like that really piss me off

Mte... Harassment is absolutely vile... I'm glad she said something. Hopefully now something can get done about it. Though, that's just the optimistic part of me speaking.

i started film school cause jobs in that field (my course is movie and tv production) supposedly pays well. yet after working seriously for three months straight in a serious major production i know that shit ain't for me. entertainment (yea movies ain't art) is male-dominated and it means you have to put up a lot of hardly fun things. i'm pretty embarassed to tell yuo about what i've been though cause it maybe wan't THAT much yet it scarred me for life.
i saw actresses being put through more than they agreeded on while shooting bed scenes without being told before hand to capture "genuine" emotions. UGH. and that was a female director too.
my brother is movie director, he advised me to try this course. i don't dare to tell him why i grew to hate what i chose to study at uni :/
after that three months i meddled in other productions, spoke with many seniors and well... movie making is stressful in general but adding the constant harrassment, that whole 'women ain't fit for movies' bs and more... like, i'm out, off to chase my dream to become a chocolatier.

I'm sorry you had to go through this
The work place is always sexist but some industry (like movie,...) are even worst, woman are just accessory

I have friends who worked in movies and I worked a little bit on the marketing part, so I've seen some of the same things. Sometimes it is so subtle and you don't even realize it.

I've been asked why don't I try to go into the industry and I can't ever do it. EVER.

agreed. i have a friend who after working for just 3 weeks already wants to give up. he's a guy but everyone treats him like shit. media is so good at making things look so glamorous, but behind the scenes, it's a very different story.

Incredibly sad, and it seems things are not changing any time soon :(

Hyori is great though, because she is speaking up about this increasingly, and comes off as being absolutely fed up with this shit after 15+ years in the business (she even dedicated an entire album to it YAY). I can see her as being the unnie that younger idol girls came up to and she'll go after people who've been complete shits. God I hope she does.

I feel like that whole plagiarism debacle with H-LOGIC helped her to grow up. She seems more down to earth and more herself and fearless now. She obviously still has a way to go with her reality show, but I really like the what she has been doing so far. She seems to be growing stronger as a woman, little by little....

This is probably one of the reasons I'm happy/glad that more girl groups are doing the innocent school girl trend. That image is less likely to get picked for sexual cfs and roles (although I don't necessarily like all their music in that theme).

MTE
The way some of those "uncle" fan feel entitled to the girls "purity" is beyond creepy and gross
Not too mention that those "innocent school girls" are always required to wear very short skirts so that "uncle" gets to see skin nonetheless
There's no winning when the concept is "imposed" on the girls
I'd much rather have more idols like Ga In or Hyuna whom actually chose to be sensual, than girls whom are forced to act a certain way

hyuna has been doing the whole sexual stuff since she was 14 (start with the WG). i doubt that she really wanted to do it in the first place, but now its just her image.

You got it there infantilize grown woman

So many people are dismissive or pick apart sexy concepts, but they rarely ever think about the images of infantilization of women, that are everywhere in everything. Treating young girl or young woman as sexual object, but at the same time infantilizing them to have the same image as innocent kids. The "pure", and "innocent" images that are branded on these grown women. They look or have to look sexy but still retain the "childlike qualities". It's so creepy but so many people never think about it, because they see it everywhere as they grow up.

People are so used to these images that they expect many women to be like that. Adult women who have these "childlike qualities". If they don't fit these images, "something is wrong" with them.

ok this is one thing i'm sick of hearing. an 18 year old girl in a school uniform dancing around cutely for grown men is GROSS but its not pedophile fodder cuz pedophiles are not interested in post pubescent girls or women. even if they look very young they are not going to be passing for a 9 year old girl in elementary school at any point.
again its still gross and if u sleep with a minor no matter the his/her age u deserve all the jail time and public shaming. but it creeps ME out when we conflate that with the men who prey on little girls and boys under age 10. i think we can agree thats a different level of disgusting in the disgusting ranking. creepy uncle fans are creepy but they arent necessarily pedophiles or i would be very afraid for any young children in their immediate vicinity. am i making sense?

Date: 2015-03-13 02:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aeromi.livejournal.com
I dont think you understand, the whole point of "innocent concepts" is to have the woman dress and act as young as possible in order to mimic bein young girls. It is pedophile fodder bc these uncle fans basically get to touch themselves without the "guilt" bc the arent actually that age. Pedophilia isnt only preying on children 10 and younger like where did you get that. Anyone under the age of 18 is considered a child and pedophiles DO prey on teenage girls and boys

It's not any better with the innocent school girls concept. Heck the quirky concepts that Crayon Pop does can be turned to something sexy in some people's imagination.

I'm glad you are okay.

People never truly know how someone feels until they actually live in someone's life. People can't even feel safe walking down the street. You see someone walking behind you or infront of you in an empty parking lot or area, and your mind starts to think all sort of horrible things. But it's realities and so many people don't understand that paranoia.

That's the image so many companies, movies, manga, stories sell though. The glamour and being loved by many people, you see them everywhere. How many tell-all-books are there? Not that many. Even if so many want to write, they'll be branded as traitors, ungrateful.

Hyori is a human being and even though she has her flaws (as we all do) I really admire how honest she has become about the industry and the fact that it seems that she genuinely supports her female peers/juniors. Like, even though spica isn't super successful, the fact that she started a girl group with honest to god talent instead of taking the easy route and starting a male idol group is amazing. bless her.

this is really sad and its definitely not just korea that this happens. a friend of mine is trying to break into the entertainment industry (bts stuff) and i honestly couldn't do it. Like, i want to work with at risk youth and mentally ill youth but i can't stomach the thought of working in hollywood bc its that terrible.

Like is it any wonder child stars so often go completely off the rails?! (And then the media goes and tries to pin it on them. "Oh, Miley is so slutty now" seriously, she's probably one of the few that came out alright as far as I can tell.)
