It's my personal opinion, but I don't think it's entirely fair to hold a society up to standards that another society has had generations to develop. Yes, it's hurtful and arbitrary to judge someone purely based on their outer appearance, but is the society as a whole even conscious about that yet? If not, there's no point being on this higher moral ground while degrading the rest who haven't reached it yet.
It was really disappointing. But the way fandom handled it is disappointing as well, though I guess when people are angry, it can't be helped. I believe a part of the fandom is going to be putting something together to send to jelpi in hopes to put a stop to this. I hope it works out, because the jokes need to stop. Cultural context or not, it's not nice to repeatedly target someone using their insecurities. And that goes for everybody, whether it's hakyeon's skin, hongbin's legs or ken's nose.
