Article: Fei blows up about stereotypes, "People ask me if I shower once a week"

Source: Mydaily via Nate

"When I first came to Korea, people asked me if I shower only once a week. I was so taken aback by that. I replied back that I shower everyday and if they really thought that Chinese people don't shower and they really did. I was so surprised."

1. [+1,063, -36] I know that it's not all people that are like that but I think Chinese people in general don't wash as often...

2. [+1,000, -32] Fei's a celebrity so she probably showers everyday but the Chinese in general don't seem to. I know that water was scarce back then but it seems to have just become a cultural thing now. I had a Chinese exchange student and went to her bathroom and it was so disgusting. I knew I was being rude and just asked if she showered often at all and she said she did because she washed her hair once a week. I think not washing often is just a cultural thing.

3. [+752, -15] I was roommates with a Chinese kid for a year too who came from a mid to high class family in Beijing. She was really nice and worked hard in everything but the one bad thing was that she showered once every 3~4 days and wore the same thing everyday.

4. [+75, -7] I'm sure the world would have environmental problems if every single person in China washed every day

5. [+73, -1] I dormed with a few Chinese kids and they never washed. Kids who shared rooms with them all shared the same problem of the smell;; The stereotype comes from experience

-

Source: Naver

1. [+11,854, -429] Fei's the exception. The Chinese tourists I see are all really noisy, smell, and don't follow social rules. I saw a group of them jaywalk at Myungdong today. It's hard to not stereotype them.

2. [+6,018, -281] Hmm.. but I don't shower, hoo

3. [+5,277, -288] That's still wrong to ask her to her face like that...!

4. [+3,759, -397] Ah... Fei's bursting with charms ㅋㅋ

5. [+3,500, -300] How could you ask that to someone's face; ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

6. [+867, -19] My dongsaeng studied abroad in China... and I know that it's wrong to generalize but they do generally seem to wash less than Koreans.. especially their hair ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

7. [+866, -34] I don't think it's just a stereotype

8. [+741, -33] I went to a hot springs resort in Japan. Saw tons of Chinese tourists at the hotel but not one of them at the actual hot springs... I think the stereotype is true.

9. [+674, -15] But they really don't wash... at least the Chinese exchange students at my school don't.

10. [+653, -15] A group of Chinese tourists got on my bus and they smelled... I'm sure Fei being a girl group member is an exception.

2. [+6,018, -281] Hmm.. but I don't shower, hoo

LMAO.

Well, leaving aside medical and infrastructure conditions, this may be different for each person... Some people just don't like bathing.

A friend of mine who went to study in China, told me that, at least the people she met, they didn't take a shower every day... But this happens in every country, so, it is something about the person specifically and not the country...

argh OP ya beat me to it! *shakes fist*

but yeah--the show was people like Fei or Shannon Williams sharing their experiences being half or non-Korean in Korea and there was one guy on the show named David who told Shannon about how since he's Italian and he's wife Korean, his child is mixed: "Prejudiced people think with a narrow perspective. You have to think that it’s special. I’m going to tell you what I told my son. You are only one person. Although you are just one, you can have two cultures. So you have a lot more to share than others. Living without prejudice, that’s the most important thing in the world."

Apparently, the original comment threads hold disgusting generalizations and xenophobic/racist sterotypes on not just chinese people, but also western people as well (Americans, Spanish people) and girls during their periods.

Also, in the NB comment section, someone posted a survey (http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/02/how-often-people-in-various-countries-shower/385470/) that literally said that Chinese people are among the people who don't shower...gtfoh.

Date: 2015-02-20 12:03 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dreamer-easy.livejournal.com
Looking at that Atlantic article, if I'm reading that graph right, the Chinese on average shower five times a week, about as often as Brits and the Japanese. So clearly, this is just another example of the universal Dirty Foreigner stereotype. (Would that the survey included Koreans, for comparison.)

lol. stereo-type... for me, for some reason, most of my filipino friends always says that Korean smells too because they eat too much kimchi. And of course there's also one for Indians because of curry. And before I moved to WA, everyone in HI used to always tell me to watch out for people in the main because they don't shower as much since they're preserving water or it's just too cold to shower. lol. I think every race/place just has them.

this is so ridiculous.
From: [identity profile] burnbook31.livejournal.com
hoping i could ask this. im not really in the position to ask how u shower, i always think its a personal preference.

- since i live with my family, i dislike it when the person i'm next to doesn't let the bucket full with water, (it probably is a filipino thing? but i live with the Imagetabo and balde (i have no idea for the right english terms sorry)) and it just annoys me cuz i have to wait for the water to fill up
- when the water is too cold and i dislike showering with luke warm water bc it makes me feel less energized.
From: [identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com
The thing I hate most about taking a shower/bath... getting through it and realizing I missed a spot while shaving or forgot to do something... when the hot water runs out... and finally, when I get out of the shower, go into the towel cabinet to dry off, and find no towels there. -_-

i guess my white ex-roommate did not get the memo, and neither did everyone in puerto rico where I'm from (we're notoriously obsessive with showers)

what the hell. though i remember a comment from ontd about bathtubs being "black with filth" after chinese international students showered rme. idk where all these comments of being smelly come from, my university is full of chinese students and i've never had to cover my nose in class when i'm sitting next to them. and i know my family definitely showers daily...

The students probably showered regularly, but didn't clean the tub often enough, so it grew black mould. I speak from personal experience. *rueful grin* But if there's a Filthy Foreigner stereotype ready to be applied, people will always apply it - "You see? That proves it!"

this is ot but why american kpop fans be acting like america aint the same if not worse when it comes to racism...yall be like so and so don't stand a chance in america but its probably mostly due to them being asian. not cause they racist. Almost every mainstream american artist has done racist/sexist/homophobic shit. Your american faves aint no better.

can you really imagine a group like big bang and 2ne1 up on an american stage and not being laughed at? and no, i don't think it would be solely about them being asian, but about how poor their imitation of hip-hop is. like really fantastic baby would be the biggest joke if it was performed on an american stage. and i don't see anyone saying racism in america isn't worse? this is just a comm dedicated to korean acts so that's what we talk about?
