AOA’s Jimin revealed the reason she cried during the first episode of Unpretty Rapstar.

During a recent interview with Newsen, AOA’s Jimin shared her thoughts on appearing on Mnet’s Unpretty Rapstar. Unpretty Rapstar is the spin off program of Show Me the Money, featuring eight female rappers fiercely competing against one another to win the opportunity to release a compilation album.

The participants of Unpretty Rapstar include Jimin, Tymee, Cheetah, Lil Cham, Kisum, Jolly V, Yuk Ji Dam and Jessi. As the only rapper currently promoting as an idol, Jimin received extra attention on the show. As most of the participants were famous underground rappers, Jimin had to face the stereotypes and prejudices of being an idol.

Jimin ended up bursting into tears in the first episode. About why she cried, Jimin said, “I was really sensitive. I went there after staying up for three days and I was just sitting there not knowing what to do and I couldn’t rap very well either. I really messed up during the cypher mission so I cried a lot not knowing what to do. I’m embarrassed.”

Jimin shared, “The members were really worried about me when they saw me struggling. I kept crying at the dorm and I guess the members were surprised because I’m the leader and unnie but I showed my weak side. I think I was leaning on them more than I thought. Since it was my first time promoting alone, I realized the preciousness of the members. After watching the show, the members told me, ‘Why are you struggling, you did so well.’ They really energize me,” expressing her gratitude towards the AOA members.

Although she cried in the first episode, Jimin slowly showed off her hidden rapping skills, receiving praise from MC SanE, Zico and the other participants. About this, Jimin said, “I was happy to receive praise, but I felt pressure about showing more and doing better so I was really nervous. I’m not nervous and it’s fun to rap in front of people but I was nervous since I was being judged by the rappers. So in a way I felt regretful.”

Jimin continued, “It’s harder to memorize the rap than to write it. During the mission, I feel like I can’t sleep since there is not enough time to memorize the rap so it’s tough. But I can only remember them after I sleep. So now I sleep as I practice. The toughest part is memorizing the lyrics.”

But Jimin has a powerful weapon, which is her ‘voice.’ Out of all idol rappers, she has a unique voice that almost sounds as if it is mixed with the electronic sounds.

Jimin shared, “I don’t take care of my throat. I can still rap even when my throat hurts. Even when I’m not feeling well, my voice comes out well. I received an examination on my throat and they said that it’s really healthy. People either like or dislike my voice but I like my voice. Some people tell me that it catches their ears since it has something special. I feel happy when I hear those things,” and smiled brightly.

Meanwhile, Unpretty Rapstar airs every Thursday at 11 p.m. (KST).

I wouldn't call her voice a weapon tbh, to me it's the one thing that will always hold her back despite her lyrical skill because it's so damn grating.
She's doing better on the show than I expected and she seems sweet but goddamn if Mnet's editing of her and Douche.E's thirst aren't grating

I really liked her lyrics for Seulong's track, but her voice is not my type and idk why she keeps rapping while looking at the floor.

IA, I can't get into AOA because of her voice tbh, she seems to be a sweetheart but... yeah.
And girl not taking care of your "work instrument" is nothing to brag about.

I didn't think it was worth its own post but Lil Flop got into a controversy over her tutoring job

bye Lil Cham tbh; I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons they added the elimination was to get rid of the rappers who the viewers dislike (Lil Cham, Tymee)

lol well at least she knows her voice is really polarizing.

I really hated it in AOA songs but there's no denying how distinctive it is and I'm honestly becoming a convert.
