[150202 | INTERVIEW] Great Southern Joseon Hip-Hop Cooperative, Time to Find Us
They are here with their first official interview. Originally comprised of 9 people (DJ Snatch, Kyum2, Rap Monster, Marvel J, Samsoon, Supreme Boy, Iron, i11evn, Kidoh), some members were unfortunately unable to participate due to their respective company and personal schedules. We asked i11evn, Kidoh, Marvel J and Supreme Boi questions about ‘DaeNamHyup’ and ‘hip-hop’.

- We heard this is ‘DaeNamJoseonHipHopHyupDongjohap (Great Southern Joseon Hip-Hop Cooperative; abbreviated as DaeNamHyup)’s first official interview. How do you feel?
Kidoh: Doing our first interview as DaeNamHyup reminds us of old memories again. After only doing STARAZ interviews as Topp Dogg, I feel unpleasant doing it with weird kids (laughs).
- We’re curious about how you came up with the name ‘DaeNamHyup’.
Marvel J: DaeNamHyup was formed when we were in the third year of middle school (Grade 9); back then, the members were only me, Supreme Boi, Rap Monster and Kyum2. We all lived in Bucheon and while doing music together formed the crew. We wanted to make a fresh name, but while walking around they happened to see Nonghyup (abbreviated form of NongsanHyupDongjohap, National Agricultural Cooperative Federation) and we thought it’d be fun to do the same to the crew name. That’s how we came up with DaeNamJoseonHipHopHyupDongjohap, shortened to DaeNamHyup [T/N: will be referred to as DNH from here on].
- How did the other members join the crew?
Supreme Boi: We got to know them as colleagues while doing music, so naturally they became a part of the current DNH lineup.
Kidoh: ‘Yah, do you wanna join?’ ‘Sure’, like this.
- Are there any standards to join DNH?
i11evn: We only need to have similar interest in terms of pursuing music. Someone who, when we first meet each other, makes us think “This person will match us well”. As soon as we met DJ Snatch we thought that he’d match well with us, so we didn’t ask for the other members’ opinions and let him join DNH. But the others all liked him.
Supreme Boi: Someone who gives us a good feeling when we first meet him.
Kidoh: We don’t accept anymore members. DNH ends with this lineup.
i11evn: We’ve reached the maximum number of members. Not long ago, I received a call from a friend who said he wanted to join DNH, but I told him that we’re not accepting anymore so I rejected their request.
- Are there any members who made a good or bad first impression?
Kidoh: Everyone already knew each other from way before. Since it’s been such a long time, no one remembers how first impressions were like.

- How did you start doing hip-hop?
Kidoh: When I was in primary school, I went to Australia to study abroad. At that time, ‘The Eminem Show’ was out for a while & you could see only Eminem on TV. While listening to Eminem’s music, I became interested in hip-hop.
i11evn: Initially, I had no interest in music. While in the military dorms, I saw Big Bang on TV. After watching the ‘Last Farewell’ performance, I told my seniors I could rap better & did a freestyle in front of them. I thought I did well (laughs). I started doing hip-hop since then.
Kidoh: i11evn-hyung is like a born genius.
i11evn: But I was discovered too late (laughs).
Supreme Boi: I initially thought I took an interest in hip-hop after listening to Epik High’s music, so whenever anyone asked me I’d answer “I started to do hip-hop because of Epik High’’. Now that I think about it again, I remember listening to Epaksa’s rap in my father’s car when I was six years old (laughs). I can still do his rap even now.
Marvel J: I originally did beatboxing. When I was in middle school, I participated in a national beatboxing competition and had the talent to win an award. In Grade 9, I was walking through Hongdae just in time for a cypher. Right then, the beatbox was out of battery so they asked for help from someone who knew how to beatbox. I beatboxed until late night and thought the hyungs who were freestyle rapping were cool. Since then, I began to do hip-hop.
Supreme Boi: Out of all of us, Marvel J’s the one who started it the most coolly (laughs).
- What kind of meanings do your stage names have?
Kidoh: I took the word ‘kid’, which means a child, & added ‘oh’ in the end. It means ‘let’s live like a child forever’.
i11evn: I came up with the name ‘i11evn’ because at that time I was eating 11 California rolls. ‘ill’ is also a slang that means ‘cool’, & I changed the ‘ll’ with the number 11.
Supreme Boi: At the time I was looking for cool words to use for my name, I really liked the word ‘supreme’. But I thought using ‘supreme’ on its own would be rather boring so I changed the spelling, replacing ‘e’ with ‘a’ to create the name ‘Suprema’. When I was young I was active as Suprema but a couple of years ago a coffee brand called Supremo came out so I thought I had to change my name.
Kidoh: His name went down in search rankings (laughs).
Supreme Boi: There was also a company called Suprema Inc. I suffered a lot (laughs). But I’m also suffering even now. When Rap Monster wore Supreme Brand clothing and uploaded a selca, fans commented, “Oppa, you’re Supreme Boi”, so if you search ‘Supreme Boi’ on SNS you can only get Rap Monster-related results.
Marvel J: I brainstormed a lot to create a cool name. Back then, there were a lot of rappers who added ‘J’ into the end of their stage names, like Crown J and Sool J. Since my real name is Jung Taegyun, I used the initial of my last name ‘J’ and added it to the word ‘marvellous’ which means ‘surprising, mysterious’ to create ‘Marvel J’.
Kidoh: To be honest, there’s nothing special about it, everyone just wanted to make cool names for themselves (laughs).

- Do you remember your first self-composed rap?
All: No.
Kidoh: For me, I think it was my demo tape when I was at Brave Brothers’ company. I made it when I was in Grade 9, now I don’t have it anymore and I don’t remember what it was like.
- But it’s still your first self-composed rap, how can you not remember it?
Supreme Boi: I want to erase it from this world. I want to completely get rid of it.
i11evn: It’s my black past.
Kidoh: I only want to remember official releases.
- In that case, what is your favourite officially released song?
Kidoh: I think out of all my official releases, ‘No Time to Spare’ is the coolest. The track itself and the rap is very satisfying. Ah, it’s an awesome song that conveys ‘DNH’s standard’ (laughs).
i11evn: It’s my last release ‘Dosu’. This song shows the direction of music I want to do from now on. Before this, I used to make public-friendly music but now I want to do a song that is Dosu-ish. I’m in the middle of preparing a song that is better than ‘Dosu’ for my first full-length album. I’m aiming to release it by May or June this year.
Supreme Boi: I tend to take the public’s taste into consideration when working on songs so that a lot of people listen to my music. On top of that, I always think about making songs out of greed. My latest release ‘Hawaii’ was daringly created and released on my own decision. I think it’s a very cool song.
Marvel J: I still don’t have one. I’m embarrassed of the songs I have released until now. My throat’s condition isn’t good at the moment because I have sulcus vocalis [T/N: cleft in vocal folds due to thinning or absence of tissue covering the vocal cord required to produce sound] but I’m preparing an album. It will be called ‘Graduation’ and, just like the title, I’m going to graduate from the kind of music I have done until now and do whatever I want. All of the songs in this album will be great.
- When you decided to do hip-hop, did your parents oppose harshly to it?
Supreme Boi: When I told my parents I wanted to do hip-hop, they objected strongly. I think if my own kid wants to do hip-hop, I’ll object to it too.
i11evn: In my case, my parents didn’t oppose to it.
Kidoh: I also received a lot of objection, so I studied hard. My father said he’d buy me music equipments if I studied hard so I really did.
i11evn: Kidoh is a really good student. He goes to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
Kidoh: Rap Monster also studies very well. Marvel J goes to Kyunghee University.
Marvel J: I think that since I [actually] study, my parents have opposed less. They’re fine as long as I rank the tenth out of the entire school for exams.
Supreme Boi: Actually I’m the smartest student here. I just never said it.
i11evn: Supreme Boi was willing to attend a science high school. He was even the Student Body President.
Supreme Boi: Even so, I hope we don’t talk about that. I only want to talk about hip-hop (laughs).

- I think there will be people who won’t look upon you favourably because you’re a crew that is affiliated with idols.
Supreme Boi: I think that may be the case. But we don’t care.
Marvel J: As long as we show them, it’ll be fine. We just have to show them
Kidoh: I think dividing underground and overground is funny. Nothing matters as long as you do things coolly. G-Dragon-sunbaenim is cool despite being an idol, right?
- It seems that hip-hop has been receiving a lot of love from the public lately.
Kidoh: Plans for hip-hop shows have increased in volume as well as castings. Before, we used to perform at Hongdae’s Prism Hall, but seeing that AX-KOREA sells out lately shows that the public’s interest is very high.
i11evn: I think idols have great strength. Rappers like Zico, Jay Park, Bobby introduce a lot of middle and high school fangirls who have buying power. We cannot ignore the role that idols play in this.
Supreme Boi: But idol rappers are idol rappers.
i11evn: Not all idol company rappers are hip-hop. There are a lot of idols who rap because they can’t sing and there are only a few people who do it right. To the point that you can count them on one hand.
- There is the line “The next batter, Supreme Boi” in Iron’s ‘C Da Future’. Will you be guesting on Show Me The Money 4?
Supreme Boi: On the day he performed that song, I received about 100 calls from acquaintances. It was about the song that I was going to release, but I think it was misunderstood by people. I think Show Me The Money is a fun program, but I still haven’t thought clearly about guesting on it.
- It looks like Supreme Boi earned a lot of money since he also produces for BTS (laughs).
Kidoh: Iron’s also no joke. These days, Iron has good account balance.
Supreme Boi: But I still have more income.
Kidoh: But we don’t know how Iron’s balance will turn out next month.
Supreme Boi: Right now I have the most.
Kidoh: After you, it’s Iron. Whoa, Iron’s second. He used to be the last but now he’s gone up to second.
Supreme Boi: He has no debts too, that Iron.
- Who is the most popular member in DNH?
Kidoh: We don’t need to think twice to know that it’s Iron.
i11evn: We’ve become ‘Iron & The Boys’ [T/N: A pun on an old hip-hop group’s name, Seo Taiji & The Boys].
Kidoh: Just last year, he was nothing but skin and bones.
Supreme Boi: Lately he’s had oily skin (laughs) [T/N: Meaning that he’s been eating well].
Kidoh: He even wears good clothes.
i11evn: But the good thing is that he hasn’t changed his colours. That is the coolest part.
- Iron must be very busy lately.
i11evn: Even so, we still meet up with him once or twice a week.
Kidoh: He often gives us a call without any special reason. Even when there isn’t anything happening, we call each other a lot.
- All of you seem like good drinkers.
Kidoh: Iron really can’t drink.
i11evn: He’ll get drunk just by a 500cc beer.
Supreme Boi: If he drinks two shots of soju he lies on the sofa and scratches his stomach. Iron is kind of a jerk like this (laughs).
Kidoh: The rest of us drink well—but in saying that, we don’t drink excessively.

- Are there any difficulties for Kidoh, who is active as a member of the idol group Topp Dogg?
Kidoh: It’s hard to do hip-hop as an idol. Idols need to be cool and cute, so I was a mess in the beginning. After Topp Dogg debuted, we held a fansign where I took a picture of myself wearing a cute headband and sent it to the DNH group chatroom (laughs). All day, I asked myself “Why did I do that” out of regret. It was hard to set my ego aside but I’ve been able to put everything down now. I take derp pictures however I want at fansigns. Since idols do this stuff, a lot of people think “What is he doing?”—but what’s worse is that there are people who think that it’s cool. That’s why I’m going to be like this (laughs).
- What drives you to continue doing hip-hop?
i11evn: We live in a country where it’s difficult to do music, so we want to keep on doing it. Korea is passive and moves stiffly. It’s a country that is built on prejudices and standards and imposes the belief that you have to match up to them in order to live. But I think that we can do hip-hop however we want.
Supreme Boi: It’s truly like a trip to find myself.
Kidoh: Making music is the most fun thing.
Supreme Boi: Even when I was still at school, doing it sneakily, aviating and being derailed was electrifying and fun but I wondered if it would be boring when I became an adult. So even though it’s an empty environment for music, I’ll continue to work hard in music.
- To me, DNH is…?
i11evn: Friends and colleagues. I have a small network. DNH members’ ages are between five and seven years apart from each other; even so, it feels like we’re all friends. I think the other members also feel the same way.
Kidoh: DNH is like a shelter. Releasing music by playing around amongst ourselves is the most fun. For me, DNH is like my home and shelter.
