Byun Yohan (29) is an actor who was rediscovered by TVN’s popular drama ‘Misaeng’. He made his film debut in ‘Working on Saturday’. In the movie ‘Cold Eyes’, he made his appearance as the driver in Jung Woosung’s gang, and he took the main character in independent movie ‘Tinker Ticker’. He was a promising new actor in the movie world, but it’s true that not as many people knew the name ‘Byun Yo-han’ as they do now. Through ‘Misaeng’, he became, a so-called ‘star’.

Even though he was rediscovered by ‘Misaeng’, he could make more diverse colors because of it. Han Suk-yool thought he acted the role of a ‘bridge’ in ‘Misaeng’. If the bridge of Sales Team 3 was Kim Dongshik, Han Suk-yool was the bridge of the 4 new recruits. Byun Yohan perfected acting as Han Suk-yool’s role as a bridge, and he survived from episode 1 to 20 having a more tenacious hold on life than in the original webtoon. [Han Suk-yool appears only in the early part of the webtoon but he stayed from ep 1 to 20 in the drama]

How was the vacation to Cebu with the cast and crew of ‘Misaeng’? You’ve shown a bit of it via your SNS during the vacation.
It was very fun. I uploaded it because the members told me to upload it (laugh)

Has the emotional nostalgia from ‘Misaeng’ gone away yet?
Well, I don’t think it has gone yet. Because I received so much love (from it), I don’t want it to be gone until I finish interview schedules.

How does it feel to achieve ‘daebak’ after 5 years from debut?
It’s been 5 years to act since I debuted, but I think I debuted in ‘Misaeng’, because ‘Misaeng’ is my first work to achieve the public audience viewing. Everything was new (to me). It was my first time to be in a TV drama. I used to have a kind of prejudice against TV dramas. I thought drama acting is different, and it has its own tone, so it was a bit of a burden for me. However, director Kim Wonseok was considerate of me, so i could act comfortably. About acting, I’ve learned a lot about if from Lee Sungmin (Mr.Oh in ‘Misaeng’). Even at the day when I didn’t have my scene to film, I went to the filming set and watched his acting and studied. Additionally, I could make my own tone of acting in the drama naturally by watching the other actors.

You’ve been favorably commented upon even though it was your first drama work.
Filming the drama, I merely knew that the drama was getting a lot of love from the public, but I’ve never thought I was favorably reviewed. I just wanted to show Han Suk-yool that i was completely in charge. I’m just thankful that people received it well. I had many worries about it (before acting as Han Suk-yool). I was thankful to the other actors who trusted my acting. Because they trusted me, I could act as much as I wanted without burdens.

Did you take the audition for Misaeng, or did the drama team call you first to cast you as Han Sukyool?
I received a call from the producer, Lee Jaemoon, first. The audition and the meeting was set all of sudden. I read a few short lines repeatedly in front of the director, and told him what I considered myself about what kind of person Han Suk-yool is. I told him Han Suk-yool didn’t only have comedy (but something more that just comedy). Therefore, the director told me the story of Han Suk-yool, and then he said he wanted to work with me. It was 10 days before the first fliming of ‘Misaeng’. I started to prepare the filming in a hurry. I heard from the director later that he auditioned a lot more actors to find the one who would act as Han Suk-yool before. I’m so thankful to him that he viewed me well. It’s thanks to him that Han Suk-yool’s precarious character could melt in the drama naturally.

Did the director Kim Wonseok ask you to act as Han Suk-yool in any specific way?
He asked me to not react typically. Not to act in standard but creatively, like not being refined. I’ve heard he asked the same thing of me and Kim Daemyung (Kim Dongshik). The drama has a writer, so we follow the script, but we use creativity in acting the part outside the script. Kim Dongshik from Sales Team 3 and Han Suk-yool in One International have a thing in common. We are the bridge. If we got compliments from the viewers, it’s was all thanks to the other actors who helped us. There was a big help from all around us.

How did you reinterpret Han Suk-yool from the original one?
Because I had only 10 days till the filming, I couldn’t read the original one many times. I’ve read it only a couple of times. Actually, I didn’t read it on purpose. I thought the original Han Suk-yool should not be stamped in my mind. I’ve caught some specific point of him (in the webtoon) and studied focusing on the drama script. [In the original webtoon, Han Suk-yool is a lot different from the drama. He is a more selfish, clever and purpose-oriented character. Like his character during the internship in the early part of the drama.] I had never met the writer (Jung Yoonjung) while filming the drama, but she said she felt a lot of affection for Han Suk-yool even though all the other actors were good too. I think it’s thanks to her love for this charactor that Han Suk-yool, who actually disappears in the latter part of the original Misaeng, could survive until the last episode.

How did you feel when your Han Suk-yool acting, that you prepared hard, got compliments?
Unlike movies, you get feedback right away when you film a drama. Not only compliments, I could fill the parts which needed to be filled, and show the parts that should be shown via feedback. I’ve read the reports about my acting when I first started the drama, didn’t read in the middle, and read again recently. I was too busy to read in the middle of the drama.

Because the drama has gotten a good response (from the public), the mood at the filming set must be good.
It was really good.(laugh) It was just like what Mr.Oh said (in the drama). The part when he said “you should understand it like glutinous rice cake when I say: like a bean rice cake (an idiom meaning good teamwork)”. It was just like that. Our teamwork in acting was just like that. There was a thing that we thought was the most important in filming the drama. It was that ‘as much as we get close, communicate, and converse to each other, it will come out in our acting.’ As a result, I think it was successful. I talked with Im Siwan and Kim Daemyung in Cebu, ‘as much as we got close, it smeared in the drama. Not the real person Im Siwan, Kim Daemyung and Byun Yohan, but Jang Geurae, Kim Dongshik and Han Suk-yool got close in the drama. It was a success.’ I think this (the popularity and good response) is the result we achieved from such sincere belief.

What is the most impressive scene while filming the 20 episodes?
All scenes were meaningful to me. I was too busy to care about the other things at the latter part of filming. (laugh) The presentation interview scene in episode 4 is the most memorable. It was a hard scene for every actor, even for the director. Siwan and I took care of the scene a lot. It was the early part of the drama, and it was the most impressive scene of Han Suk-yool even in the original webtoon. Therefore, I put so much effort in it. That scene had to draw a few minutes when the swindler turns into a sincere guy just as Jang Geurae said. It had to feel like he was selling medicine (a slang meaning fraud/cheating) and serving it at the same time. [the presentation scene is when Han Sukyool, who was like a fraud, wakes up and turns into a sincere guy. And because of Han Suk-yool’s character, he should have the mood of both a fraud and of one telling the truth] It was an important scene because people could understand why he looked upon ‘the site’ as an important place and why he had acted like that. For this scene, I practiced until the morning with Im Siwan. Siwan finished filming his scene at 2AM, we came to my school(KARTS) at 3AM, practiced together till 5AM, and then we went to Ilsan Kintex to film the drama. In my position, I thought Han Suk-yool could change the aura if only I did the scene well.

You didn’t have any experience in an office, how did you get the know-how about acting as an office worker?
There were so many things to do after being cast in the drama. Other actors were already going to the real company to learn what office workers do and receiving lectures as interns. [Daewoo International is the model of One International, and the cast of the drama went to the company to learn office work for the reality in the drama. But Im Siwan learned nothing because his character was a layman who didn’t know anything about the office.] I had started learning it later than the others. I went to the fabric team, learned what to do, and felt the air in the office of Daewoo International. The office workers taught me in detail. There is a real ‘business assistant’ Choi Hoonmin in the drama ‘Misaeng’ team. He was with us until the end of the drama making the whole reports and documents appear in the drama just like the real ones that are used in companies. I asked him what kind of Misaeng characters were many in real companies, and he said there are many people like Han Suk-yool, and also there are people who fight during a presentation. (laugh)

Han Sukyool was impressive as a character regarding ‘the site’ important.
I thought expressing his pride in ‘the site’ well is expressing his history well. Acting the scene where he raised his voice for the importance of ‘the site’ in episode 4 helped me to have confidence in acting as Han Suk-yool. Lee Sungmin sunbaenim once told me. When he watched the acting of Han Suk-yool until the end of it, Suk-yool is like the young days of Mr.Oh. He is all by himself, has a strong will, and cares about his colleagues behind their backs. He smiles in front of his family but suffers all by himself. He also told me that not only Han Suk-yool resembles Mr.Oh, Byun Yohan also resembles Lee Sungmin’s young days. And he added I should act as Mr.Oh if I get cast in Misaeng season 2. Haha.

Unlike comical Han Suk-yool, you are much calmer.
Comedy is inside of me. Actually, I’m an introvert. I become mischievous when I’m with my friends, family and the co-workers in my agency. Han Suk-yool is mischievous. He is more like when I was a teenager when I did aegyo to my parents more than the grown me. My parents miss when I had much aegyo so my mother was happy to watch ‘Misaeng’ because it was like seeing me when I was young.

Getting love from the viewers, the scandal with Kim Koeun was relighted.
Haha. Koeun is just a close dongsaeng. She is a junior in my school. She entered the school one year later than me. We still give advice to each other about acting. We are sorry to each other for making it a scandal. We are close to the other actors, too. Our friends who know us laugh at the scandal. Koeun and I cheer each other on to work harder and fool around. I’m even thankful about these things because it comes from the love for ‘Misaeng’. On the other hand, I have a responsibility. I’m making a promise to myself that I should not be ‘drunken’ to the popularity and should do what I used to do.

Because of the popularity of Misaeng, you must be concerned a lot about the next project.
Of course. But I don’t want to be sensitive about it. I won’t worry much about it. I want to work on a project that I can enjoy and work in pleasure.

Year 2015, You just became 30 in Korean age. How will the actor Byun Yo-han in his thirties be?
When I was in the twenties, I was intense and greedy in acting, and felt hasty to be honest. I think age is just numbers. What I think now in my mind is that I just want to live getting along well with people and loving them. I want to live accepting what I should accept and leaving out what i should leave out. I want to communicate well. I want to listen, tell and communicate more frankly from the bottom of my heart.

How would you do if Misaeng season 2 cast you?

That is, no comment for now (laugh)

Thanks for posting this, OP! I didn't think his interviews would be translated, so this is really cool. On the tumblr, there is also a translated version of his Marie Claire interview (http://byun-yohan.tumblr.com/post/106142980494/interview-marie-claire-january-2015-nice-to) -- I think that wasn't posted here yet? I haven't read it myself but I plan on doing so soon. :)

Watching him on Misaeng ( took a break from a bit. I think I am up to episode 4) I kept freaking out because I kept seeing Kai and I'm trying not to get pulled into Kai(but its happening slowly) So there were times I covered his face with my hand to stop freaking out.
