JYP Launching New Label Called Studio J, G.Soul Revealed as First Artist

On January 18, Park Jin Young announced on his Twitter the launch of JYP Entertainment’s new label called Studio J. He wrote, “In 2015, we will launch Studio J, JYP’s new direction.”

He continued, “We have appointed a distinguished and talented graduate of Berklee College of Music in charge [of the label] and rather than appealing to the mainstream we hope to showcase free and deep artists.”

Park Jin Young revealed G.Soul as the first artist on Studio J’s roster.

G.Soul, who released his debut album “Coming Home” on January 18, is a good example of the free-spirited artists that Studio J will house. G. Soul made headlines after Park Jin Young announced through a heartfelt letter his long-awaited debut (G.Soul was a JYP trainee for 15 years!). If the teasers for his upcoming album are any indication, G.Soul’s music touts an organic soulful vibe that differs from the usual music that JYP churns out.

I'm curious to see how it all works out. I know he's said that he's starting to understand that it's not just about one person anymore and is letting the artists kind of discover their own sound. If anything, I just hope they do a better job at promoting their artists.

I love how much all the other JYP artists have been promoting G.Soul during the past few weeks. That album is solid. I don't have any complaints about it.

I think long term it'll be great for JYPE to broaden its horizons and musical diversity. JYP has so many talented artists under his label that it would be a waste not to make use of it. Hopefully this new label will lead to a lot of creative freedom and synergy, whilst maintaining the marketing and promo machine of JYPE.

I just hope marketing and promotion do a good job. jype has done a solid job this year with got7 and sunmi - i hope that trend continues for their other artists soon

From my understanding it'll be for artists to create and produce their own music... so less hands-on from JYP?

If that's the case, it might be a label to follow. I always thought JYP was very good at writing songs in 'his' genre, inspired by R&B and soul but not quite as versed in other genres. So I only applaud this move, can't ever have enough creative minds that can produce for themselves.

Definitely. I'm excited to see who else will be under this new label. I know several of the 2PM boys have composed and produced a few of their own stuff, so from that standpoint, I'm really excited. I think as he's getting a little older and his artists are getting older, he's starting to realize that there needs to be a bit more diversity in the music being produced and that the best place to start is own artists.

My hope is that this would also mean better marketing and promotion as well.

I think this is dope but I also think SK needs to over haul a lot of other stuff in regards to the music industry. There's already a bunch of labels with diverse music but since Idol labels are the ones hoarding money and influence a lot of stuff falls through the cracks. I wish there were more shows that focused solely on non-idol and non ballad music. Also those shows should get the same amount of international push that shows with idols get. Also they need to stop being cheap with sound systems and camera people who know what the fuck they are doing. Like even if this means music programs geared directly towards hip-hop fans (think Yo! MTV Raps! or Rap City the Basement), shows for rock (Headbanger Ball), etc.

Probably good idea (as long as this new label is provided good marketing machine and some JYP's behind the scenes push to get artists into radio and TV). For instance I feel that Yenny's debut EP would have been a lot more successful if she had been an artist under AOMG or Amoeba Culture as people wouldn't have expected it to have mainstream sound.
