The producer of the popular drama tvN series Reply 1997 and Reply 1994 Shin Won Ho has hinted that a new and third installment is currently being prepared.

According to a staffer, the producer had “worried about which year he was going to base for the drama. There were years like 2002 and 1988 and many more to be used. However, it had been decided that 1988 will be the year for the new series. As for the season premiere,” he continued, “we are currently expecting July 2015.”

In fact, Reply 1994’s art director Seo Myung Hae had previously given hints to the public regarding the new installment during a previous interview.

Talks of Reply 1988 reportedly began last year. At the time, few agencies had met with the staff for casting reasons and other actions were also taken in preparations for the new installment However, for some reason, the making of the drama was stopped.

Shin Won Ho had also mentioned that “many discussions were made, but we have a situation that need us to stop everything. We need to continue to take our time to look carefully at the situation. Reply 1988 is not a certain thing yet. I am reconsidering everything so it may take a long time.”

Three months later, Reply 1988 was finally confirmed and is in preparation.

The year of 1988 was full of issues and stories in the entertainment industry, and is best known as the year in which Chinese and Hong Kong movies flourished with actors Leslie Cheung, Chow Yun Fat, Joey Wong, and many more. The Korean music stage was also splendid. Artists such as the “King of Pop” Jo Yong Pil, Lee Moon Sae, Kim Wan Sun, Lee Sun Hee, Byun Jin Seob, and many more took the scene.

Th upcoming Reply drama may even carry the story of the winner of the 1988 College Song Festival, Shin Hae Chul, who passed away in October 2014. Other events that occured in 1988 included the Seoul Olympics and its mascot Hodolee, the boy with the hoop, and many more. A significant event that also occurred in Korea included the hostage situation by Ji Gang Heon, which was later used as a basis for the movie Holiday.

The Reply series began in the year 2012, with Reply 1997, and continued in the year 2013 with Reply 1994. Stars such as Seo In Guk, Jung Eunji, Yoo Yeon Suk, Dohee, Son Ho Joon, and many more experienced soaring popularity after appearing in the series. The drama is known to be well made with the producer’s decision to cast certain idol actors and actresses for roles, and never having an issue about their performance in acting during the series.

Excited for this!
There's been so much emphasis on the 90's that it will be interesting to have a taste of Korea in the 80's.

Edit: I wonder at what point there going to leave the drama alone though.

I didn't watch 1994 bc it seemed very love triangle heavy. hopefully the producers handle this series carefully.

it really wasn't love triangle heavy at all lol. the lead girl never had romantic feelings for the second lead, in that regard R1997 was more of a love triangle than R1994

So then that means if they have it go through to the present there will need to be two sets of actors since they'd be in their early-to-mid 40s now. I wonder how that'll work bc it'll be harder to connect past characters to the present. Unless they have the "present" be the 90s or 2000s. Either way I am on board. I hope it's better than 1994 tho

Definitely here for another instalment to the Reply series. I liked 1994 at the start but it started moving a little slow and I didn't get the end game I wanted weep. I hope the husband hunting stuff isn't included in this though

I watched Reply 1997 and loved it (though I disliked the older brother). Should I watch the 1994?

94 is good just not as good as 97 imo. Love the characters and their relationships with each other. But they streched it to the 20 episodes.

If they continue with the triangles can they at least make it who is the wife instead?

But please be more 97 than 94. 94 had too little story and spent too much time telling it.

I loved Reply 1997. I've re-watched it multiple times, it just really hit home. 1994 lost me midway. I just wasn't there for another (semi)adopted-bro getting with the girl story line. It seemed like a REPLAY of 1997 instead of an original story. Please, god, don't let the same thing happen to 1988.

*edit: another reason why 1994 lost me was because of editing. When 1997 had short episodes everything paced nicely and the story was on point. It seems once the length started to increase, the story started to drag. No need for all that filler.

YES.

the love triangle/romance thing was fun but for me the friendships and the relationship between Siwon and her father is what hit me the most. i was so sad when it ended.

For me the series just got too caught up in it's popularity to be good :/ the first one was great but even towards the end it started to show with longer episodes etc and then for 94 it was just ridiculous having nearly 2 hr episodes and obviously changing plot points to fit with public opinion even though it didn't make sense

I'll give this one a shot probably but I didn't make it halfway through 94 so it will have to be good to get me to watch all the way through

(hoping for discovering some new idol acting talent though, if they go that route again)

1997 yes. Can't talk about 94 cause I dropped it, but it was partly because after 1997 I had expectations and imo it didn't deliver. But I do recommend watching 1997.

since I hated R1997 but loved R1994 ig this series can be hit or miss for me but I'll check this out (depending on who they cast probably). I hope they don't do the "who's the husband" thing again tho

I really hope they don't drag it like R1994. Whilst in 1997 the husband hunting was fun and exciting (and kind of took the background to portraying an era), in 1994 they dragged the same premise for way too long and it just felt as if they were mocking viewers. Also, even though I understand she (*spoiler*) didnt end with Chilbong, they really messed up with his character development by shipping him to japan and making him a 1D puppy like character towards the end (besides the ridic measly 60secs in which he meets his wife, who is indirectly portrayed as a goo hara character carbonprint).

Date: 2015-01-12 09:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kicking-tenshi.livejournal.com
I stopped watching after they f#ed up Chilbong. Watching in real time, they went overboard with trying to make the audience root for one character vs. the other because it got to the point where either Chilbong or Trash would be highlighted in the episode but never at the same time. I ended up just monitoring the gifsets.

I hope this doesn't suck as bad as 1994. I quit that episode in a rage after how they handled Binggrae's storyline and baiting the fans with the red car.Plus Chilbong got shafted continuously in character development

I love r97, but haven't had the chance to watch r94 yet. I was hoping for a r2000 or 2002, since I remember more from that time. but maybe they already used all the jokes from these years on their previous two dramas.

Hmm...the comments on 1994 are interesting since Chilbong was NEVER an option and Bingeurae's situation to me meant he was more fluid in his sexuality/or bisexual and loved who he loved.

I suppose the red car not being Joon upset people but that coincidence would have had me like, "Sure there ONLY two gay men in Seoul"

i liked reply 1997 but sorta hated 1994. chilbong was sorta treated as a plot device and had a shit ending too.
