SHINee’s Jonghyun talks about the collaboration tracks from his debut album Base as he explains the reasons behind their featuring.

On January 8th, Jonghyun held his debut showcase Base of Jonghyun at SMTown, Coex Artium in South Korea, where he met with the press to introduce his solo material and talked about his future plans on stage.

During the interview, Jonghyun talked about his collaborations with Zion.T, Wheesung, Iron and Younha and further asked on his standards on selecting such featuring. To this, he revealed that, “I chose the artists who can express the songs well. I also had written a song specific to an artist.”

As the song “Deja-Boowas first introduced along with the featuring artist Zion.T, he explained that, “This song was purposed with a flavor of hip-hop. For that reason, I had kept in mind of Zion.T’s voice when I wrote the song. I had also added on various aspects to the song while recording to fit in Zion.T’s features.”

The statement was followed up by his description with singer Wheesung, whom he collaborated with for the track “Hallelujah” and confessed Wheesung is his idol and the artist that he respects greatly, further adding that, “I got a lot of inspirations from Wheesung. There were a lot to learn from the songs he had released. I had contacted him out of blue to ask for his help.”

“Crazy,” the title song from the album featuring rapper Iron, Jonghyun explained that, “We did not know of each other personally, however, I was first suggested the artist through my company. I reproached myself of not being able to think of him earlier.”

Meanwhile, Jonghyun also talked Younha whom he collaborated with for “Love Belt” and revealed that he wanted a female vocalist for the track. He further explained that he was interested with her distinct, cool vocals and warm emotions after listening to her songs with Epik High.

Jonghyun met with his fans and the press though the showcase and has embarked on his solo promotions since. His first solo album Base will be officially released online on January 12th.

I guess someone at SM thought the track needed a real rapper...

Maybe it was actually Minho? "Mmmm, I'm so busy these days... But I have to help hyung and find somebody... Not as talented as me, of course, but... Okay, Iron will do."

Like he has time to be on some rookie singers first album. He's too busy injecting new life into the rap game.

I can't say I believe this tbh. I can't see SM actually recommending anyone that isn't in house (I was also shocked to see no SM features at all). He was a long time fan of SMTM so idk if he is just trying to give them some credit here or what lol

Jjong ain't fooling me I know exactly how this went down. He waited until after a long day's work and treated SM management out for drinks and whatnot. He watched them get shitfaced drunk and took lots of incriminating photos. Then he walked into the boardroom next day and was all,
"So this is how it's gonna be, I'm an artist so I need to collaborate with ARTISTS or all of you can say hello to Dispatch. First thing's first, my title track. I'll need a rapper like the dude on SMTM3 who really should have won."
SM executive, "You mean Iron?"
Jjong, "Yeah that's the one! Good suggestion, let's go with that. Who else?"

LMFAO girl I am here for this fanfic

"Next Ima need the company car to swing by Amoeba and pick up my boo Hae sol for our studio session today which really isn't up for debate, I'm just letting you know as a formality tbh. BTW where is Lee Soo Man?? We need to discuss the layout for my new studio. What, what's that look? Bitch you don't need to know the details just get tell his old ass he needs to be here in five or BNR might have a few accidents in the way of leaks tonight, you dig?"

This image people seem to have that SM is one entity with one mind and not a company with hundreds of employees with different opinions and different roles within the company such as administration, public relations and actual music making and artistry is so strong. It is a fact that this kind of collaboration is new and shouldn't have take so long to happen but just because someone in the company thinks collaborations with other artists is not as profitable doesn't mean that the company isn't full of people, talented people with degrees, that have great opinions and ideas. This is just a though I have had for a while now it isn't specifically directed to you and I'm sorry if I sound a little hostile, I just had been thinking about this.

No worries tbh. It's not as though I believe SM is the borg but I feel they have an in-house formula/pattern/dependence (Heechul mentioned this before) but if TPTB are finally ready to give their talent some creative freedom and choice in the projects they work on, I'm glad things are headed in that direction. I'll take this influx of solo projects as a good sign.

Quite surprising that someone in SM first suggested Iron. Some people thought the company didn't like having a non-SM artist as a feature in the title track because at first they didn't put 'feat. Iron' in the MV title and only edited it in later, lol.

I hope the success of Deja-Boo convinces SM that a Jjong-composed track can be a hit after all.

I hope this a step closer for him to work as a legit composer/songwriting not only for himself but many idols and artists when he isn't doing SHINee activities and beyond SHINee.

Is it too much to hope for a Jjong-composed SHINee track? I know SHINee's style and his are rather different but they do have R&B-ish tracks.

Yeah, he did. He also wrote the lyrics for Dangerous, Spoiler, Up & Down, Selene 6.23, Better Off, Alarm Clock, Orgel, and Honesty. I can't remember if there are any more lyrics he wrote for SHINee, but I think that's it.

None as far as I know but I'm dying to know what he wrote with Teddy. I was expecting it on the mini but maybe it'll make an appearance on the new SHINee album...

i'm surprised someone at the company had to suggest iron to jjong. i just figured because he was a smtm3 fanboy that it was all his idea. that maybe he conducted himself the way he usually does: fanboy from a distance, engage the person in an intense friend courtship, finally win them over and bring them into his fold.

but i guess this way works too.

I was interested when I first saw the tracklist and saw "Hallelujah" up there since he had recently uploaded a picture of Jeff Buckley on twitter (an artist, incidentally, I always thought Jonghyun should be made aware of if he wasn't already, because vocally there share some similarities, and though R&B is Jjong's main bag, he's also expressed interest in rock/alternative stuff)

....but it ended up being totally different stylistically from Buckley, lol.

I'm pretty surprised that SM suggested Iron for him. Maybe all the shit that went down last year in SM as well as success of collabs (Some, A Midsummer Night's Sweetness, etc.) made perceptions change in SM what comes to both music and collabs? Though they still put less public friendly Crazy as title track instead of Jonghyun's self composition. (I wonder if they will switch promoting to only Deja-Boo considering it's doing better on charts than Crazy?)

What's exactly considered public friendly? I'm confused because I thought that Crazy, being a mid-tempo song and not the typical SM electro-dance track was considered public friendly, but I've seen lots of people saying it's really not, so I'm confused tbh.

Love Belt is a beautiful track, and the track works for me because his voice and Younha's compliment each other's so well. Also because they stayed in the same key and didn't harminize the chorus.....I could go on and on, but I'll spare everybody...lol.
