Q: It feels like it’s been an entire year since the last time we heard your voice, until your current featuring on this song with 20yearsofage. What are your thoughts?
Hyuna: I was really nervous. On the day the track was going to be released, 20yearsofage and I were both yelling “It’s going to be out in 20 minutes”, “I don’t know anymore”, and even refused to leave the house. Haha. Both of us were particularly sensitive and vexed before the song was completed, and it was a great relief after the song was released. The fans’ reactions were good too; Nine Muses will definitely have our comeback, but in the meantime it seems that the fans’ thirst can be slightly alleviated by this song.

Q: It’s a different sound from that of Nine Muses. Your voice seems to have changed slightly.
Hyuna: Hyemi has said that she thinks I’m most able to sound feminine with my voice. Haha. I had many frustrations about my vocals. Because I’ve often heard things like “Nine Muses vocal ability is weak”, I wanted to do my very best for this recording even if it took up a lot of time. I put in a lot of effort to find a voice that would match 20yearsofage.

Q: You must have heard a lot of praise for your vocal colour.
Hyuna:
Actually even until “Wild”, I had a complex about my voice. It was fans who helped me gain confidence. Now, I’m able to tell which parts sound good. But there are still areas of my voice I need to work on. Occasionally I’ll think in passing “My voice is pretty good, right?” but it isn’t at the level where I can grow complacent yet. Recently I’ve felt that Kim Phil from Superstar K6 has a good voice. I learnt a lot from that. I’d want to hone my voice a little more too. Haha.

Q: Though there are many fans who like Moon Hyuna’s lower and unique tone, it seems that your voice is much more feminine in this new song.
Hyuna:
This song is not the end, only the beginning, and I want to show more diverse sides to myself. If it was like before, I’d be busy with recording right after receiving the song. This time, I got the opportunity to interpret the song more easily, and had many more thoughts about the music too. Since it’s just the beginning now, everyone will get to hear much more in Nine Muses’ album.

Q: How did you come to collaborate with 20yearsofage?
Hyuna:
We were high school classmates. In my memory, 20yearsofage was a friend who was always working on music alone. We weren’t close at the time, so I often thought things like “What’s that guy doing, putting on airs~”. Haha. 20yearsofage had heard of me too, and had the impression that I was a person so passive that I never got anything done. Haha. When I heard that he’d formed his independent band, I’d been waiting for the right time, and called him in April to say “Hey, if you want to release something let’s do it together”. Though it was a call that came 10 years later, it wasn’t awkward at all.

Q: What’s the background to the birth of the song “Indelible 11-digit number”?
Hyuna:
It was originally meant to be a sad song. Something like the sentimental hurt felt by Moon Hyuna upon seeing 20yearsofage. But because the recording studio was in Ilsan, it was while commuting on the train and the bus that the thought occurred: we wanted to produce a song that would be neither too light nor heavy to listen to, whether you’re going to school or on the way to work.

Q: Did you take part in the composition process?
Hyuna:
Because there were produced songs available, I tried to search for one that would suit my voice well. To find a resonance with the melody and the lyrics, we really discussed a lot. Even in the details; there were too many recurrences of “yoboseyo” in the song, so I cleaned it up some.

Q: “Yoboseyo” is your own voice?
Hyuna:
Indeed. Actually, the “yoboseyo?” parts took longer to finalise compared to the actual singing parts on the song. 20yearsofage finished the singing portion in one go, but spent up to 3-4 hours on the “yoboseyo?” portions. To achieve the affectionate point of the song, some sort of conversation was needed, but it was a little tricky because we were classmates. Haha.

Q: This composition seems to show your ambition and hopes in music, too.
Hyuna:
I featured on some works by the group House Rulez prior to debut. Since I was young, my father loved music a lot, and he would play music to wake me in the mornings. I’ve always been sentimental about LP vinyl records, and felt that this was a good opportunity to show it.

Q: Weren’t you originally active as a model? When did your dreams of becoming a singer begin?
Hyuna:
Though I had dreams of singing all along, I ended up taking a really long way around to achieve this dream.1

Q: It’d be good if you can eventually say you’ve dabbled in modelling, acting, and music. Haha.
Hyuna:
I hope to do that. Haha. You need to act when making music. Singing, too, needs a finer touch to express the emotional qualities. For someone like me to present herself, I need to have that background as a model. I’d like to try many different things.

Q: You’re learning how to play musical instruments too?
Hyuna:
I’m learning how to play the ukelele, and learning the guitar with Kyungri. I bought a piano some time ago, to be more diligent with my practice. I’d say I’m now undergoing the process of getting better acquainted with music. Though it isn’t at the level where I can claim any sort of “Moon Hyuna’s music” yet, I’ve been able to experiment in various ways. I was able to receive a lot of help because I have friends by my side who are much more involved with music. Urban Zakapa, Younha, Eric Nam, and the oppadeul from the company like ZE:A and V.O.S.

Q: You seem to have many connections.
Hyuna:
Haha. I think that my web of connections is really small. I don’t get out much… Only when people visit. I guess I only meet with people I’m close to.

Q: What area of music do you want to produce?
Hyuna:
I want to make music that’s ordinary like the everyday. Even if there isn’t anything outstanding, but there are still lots of shifting emotional experiences. The trifles of everyday life that are neither trivial nor crucial - I want to make music that is like that. I did this project because indie music seems particularly able to tell these sort of stories. Internally, I’ve been influenced by many other artistes, but I want to present more music that’s “Moon Hyuna-styled”.

Q: Nine Muses is indeed a talented group, but it’s a pity you haven’t received much recognition.
Hyuna:
I want the public to know of Nine Muses’ abilities, and would like to have a collaboration between Nine Muses and 20yearsofage. There remain many details to be discussed with the company, but in my heart I’ve 200% planned for other short-term public appearances with the other members. It may be a little sloppy to say this now, but I can reveal that we’re in the process of preparing and practising.

Q: What were the members’ reactions after listening to “Indelible 11-digit number”?
Hyuna:
The members really gave me lots of encouragement. Erine even said “What’s up with this song’s addictiveness? It makes me want to listen to it non-stop”, and Kyungri said it was great after listening to the first verse. As for Sungah, she was very supportive after listening to the guide. I actually have a few other friends who would be suited to this type of music. We sharpen each other’s skills, and help my group members and other artistes interact more in the area of music.

Q: Tell us more about what the members of Nine Muses have been up to recently.
Hyuna:
They’re living as best as they can without losing their own pace. Minha is trying her hand at acting with tvN’s “Plus Nine Boys”, and Kyungri is emphasising her sexy side with nasty Nasty. This year is a period of investing in our personal growth.

Q: You haven’t released any album this year, so what have you been talking about with your members?
Hyuna:
We’ve been talking a lot about topics we’d never mentioned before. I moved house recently, and during then we chatted about the many kinds of music we want to make. Now that we understand what the other members want, we help out with searching for suitable songs. It’s also strengthened our resolve towards Nine Muses. If you look at our Instagram accounts, you can probably see - we’re really living with contentment. Haha. As Minha often reminds me, “there is no reason to be unhappy”.

Q: You experienced the departure of Lee Sem, Eunji, and Sera this year, right?
Hyuna:
We’re supportive of whatever direction we each choose to take in life. We did feel their absence too. Sera, in particular, is a close friend who suffered a lot while in Nine Muses, and my heart is full of thoughts like “thank you for everything all this while”. It would be great if we could work together on music in the future. When Sera left, it was also an increase in the responsibility I felt as an unni within the group. Sera was worried about me, and the members also took this opportunity to communicate better and strengthen our relationship. We embraced each other fully.

Q: How do you overcome this absence?
Hyuna:
We plan to strive even harder; because there are 6 of us, we got a set of rings that are precious to us.2 Haha. If any of us comes out without wearing it, a huge fuss is made. Erine didn’t wear her ring out recently and got scolded for it. We promise to do the best that Nine Muses is able to, in the area of music. Let’s make our music, all the way to our limits.

Q: Your fans are worried about you, please say a few words to them.
Hyuna:
We’ve read much of what fans say. The regret and apologies in our hearts are truly numerous. We’re terribly sorry that we can’t express our position to those who have remained by our side despite the various things that have happened, and we’re grateful to everyone for waiting for us. What’s certain is that we want to show you all the pinnacle of what Nine Muses is able to achieve with music. Please wait just a while longer. It should be released at the end of this year or early next year.

Q: Have you watched the documentary “9 Muses of Star Empire”?
Hyuna:
I watched it not too long ago. The film seems to have drummed up the dramatic aspects of it. While watching the film, I couldn’t help but feel bitter. I am happy now, and that is partially because it’s reflected against the unhappiness of Nine Muses in that film. We also had our joys even then, but watching the documentary, I feel that we’re in a more pleasant place now, and our work staff have improved a lot, and things are better. Because there was once a time like that, so even if Nine Muses is in a vacuum period, we can still do our best and continue to where we are now.

Q: Seeing yourself before debuting in Nine Muses, how did you feel?
Hyuna:
I only found out recently that after my meeting with Sera, she was actually really pleased and said to another friend “I met a new friend with lots of charisma today”. I felt rather weird when the documentary came to the scene when I first met Nine Muses. Haha. But it’s become really natural now, and we can talk about topics like romantic relationships and family relationships. It’s really improved a lot.

Q: It seems that Nine Muses interacts quite well with fans.
Hyuna:
Because we interact a lot with fans, it gives the impression that we’re thirsty for it. Haha. We want to receive lots of feedback from our fans. Isn’t it the same for all singers? Singers want to interact, but some don’t show it openly. We’d like to interact with fans as much as possible, without it becoming excessive.

Q: What’s the most encouraging thing you’ve received from fans?
Hyuna:
When we receive letters from fans. Though a single word of “fighting” is encouragement, but we also get motivated from when fans talk to us about the little things, even their frustrations. From reading those letters it drives us to do our best. Though these individuals gain strength from me, the reverse is the same, and I get strength from words of encouragement.

Q: Before this interview, we wanted to find some clips of live singing from sources other than stage performances, but there wasn’t much. Please upload more.
Hyuna:
Other than our regular uploads to Instagram, the company plans to film more official practice videos. We’ll upload lots. Recently, I don’t just want to sing covers of songs, and want to work more on expanding the way I think about music, and feel the joy of composing my own work. Now’s probably the time when we can really do the music we want, isn’t it?

Q: What side of Nine Muses do you, Moon Hyuna, personally want to show?
Hyuna:
If I were to be greedy for specific genres, I’d want to try jazz or groove style music. Or something like Toni Braxton’s “You’re Makin’ Me High” - something with a strong bass and slight elements of hip-hop would be good too. What I most want to challenge is music with a strong oriental influence. “Adult Ceremony” or Uhm Junghwa-sunbaenim’s older songs - these are songs we could probably assimilate well.

Q: Not too long ago, on October 14th, it was the 4th anniversary of Moon Hyuna’s debut.
Hyuna:
It passed by, just like that. Haha. Though the first and second years weren’t easy to handle, the fourth anniversary feels like the birthday of a woman in her 30s. Rather than saying it’s something to be celebrated, it’s more of a pat on the back to myself saying “you’ve worked hard”. It’s been four years but I haven’t been able to be happy with it. I tell myself that I have to do better in the future. When I think of how much further I have to go, I can feel the weight of this burden.

Q: Without realising it, you’re in the latter half of your twenties.
Hyuna:
The members have recently been talking a lot about marriage. As for me, I’ve also thought that I can’t get married - there’s too much I want to do. Haha. Erine said, “If I’m not married by the time I’m 30, then I might as well not get married at all”. Erine isn’t the type to just say things like this… I’m a little concerned.

Q: You say there are many things you want to do - such as?
Hyuna:
I want to be a radio DJ, and go on female-only vacations, and write essays about things. Also, I’d like to live overseas and accumulate more knowledge about music. Ordinarily, people who want to do many things would control themselves and be careful with their spending, but I think that I don’t really know what to do with myself. In my life, I’ve had moments where I felt invisible, and have been terrified and cried. In the future I still want to do artistic projects that I can absorb knowledge from. Despite our members’ different personalities and characters, we’re all alike in this point. So, you can look forward to our next album.

Q: When are you happiest?
Hyuna:
Recently I’m happiest when eating, and I also enjoy the time I spend playing with my cats. Of course, there are also things that really stress me out, but I’m fortunate that listening to music can make all my stress melt away. Though I may be very emotional, using the right methods of expression can smooth untangle the knots. Being able to express yourself fluently is a kind of happiness in itself. There’s no reason to be unhappy.

Q: You seem to be pretty positive.
Hyuna:
Though it’s easy to slip into melancholy and influenced by others, I’m able to let go of things quickly. I’m the unni in the group, and if I can’t pull myself together, there may be times when my younger friends are hurt. Because of that I work hard to resolve any problems of my own. The members do their part not to agitate me either.

Q: If you could say a word to spur yourself on…
Hyuna
: I want to be always be self-aware, and able to manage my own settings in life. I seem to be pretty lax in self-management. Also, even in my times of rest I don’t feel rested. When I rest I feel like I’m going to go the way of the dodo bird and get eliminated, which is why I can’t fully unwind. If I could become someone who can rest at easy, that’d be great.

Q: What will Moon Hyuna in her 50s be like?
Hyuna:
Eh, 50s? Haha. Uh… I want to have a small space to make music, drink some tea and beer, and mingle with people - a small haven for shared play. If there are people whom I respect and admire with regard to music, I’d do that. So, I’ve also hung out with Urban Zakapa, Younha, Eric Nam - we’d drink alcohol and play the keyboard and talk. Or maybe I’d want to try walking down Jane Goodall’s path. Haha. Though it may seem mushy to say things like this, as I get older, if I can manage my family well I’d want to diligently do so. Becoming an animal, or part of the planet3… Haha.

Q: Don’t you still have cats at home? Your life seems it’d suit a variety programme on the topic of “living by myself”.
Hyuna: Sungah comes by to play often, and when she sees my face bare of any makeup, she’ll sneakily take photos. Haha.

Q: Haha. You give the impression of knowing yourself well.
Hyuna: I’ve been living away from my parents since I was 20, and it was necessary to understand myself to survive. I read an autobiography of Hilary Clinton; she too looked into the mirror and asked “What can I do?” repeatedly. I started late on this path of being a singer, and really went one huge round; because I understand myself better now I realise I was too lax when younger. If I could have understood myself better back then, I’d have grasped the essentials of my own happiness much earlier.

Q: Any last words?
Hyuna: Other than anticipating Nine Muses’ music, please also look forward to Moon Hyuna’s music. I’d be happy to receive such care. I can share my feelings with anyone through singing, and it’s great to share these feelings of compassion.
//
1 Not a mistranslation. Hyuna’s answer in the interview was unrelated to the question too.
2 The adjective used here for the rings is not “precious” per se, but would roughly translate to something like “absolute; great; final” - sort of in The One Ring fashion, if that makes any sense.
3 I make no claim to understand Moon Hyuna, who seems to be implying that she wants to become one with the universe???

I feel that way too. Sera saw that the group needed direction and picked up the slack and the others likely didn't realize how burdensome that was on her until she was no longer around to fix all the odds and ends.

I'm getting to like her more and more. Those two songs really suit her vocals and the interview was lovely.

And I do hope the group receives vetter treatment than they did in the documentary - but I have my doubts.
