SISTAR’s Soyou reminisced about her trainee days.

During the January 7 broadcast of Starship trainees’ survival program Mnet’s No Mercy, SISTAR’s Soyou told the Starship trainee Gi Hyun (Kihyun) to work hard since he is preparing for his debut in a good environment.

Soyou said, “You guys are working in a really good environment. Before SISTAR was formed I had to sleep at home since we didn’t have a dorm. So on the days I missed the public transportation home, I spread the yoga mats on the floor of the practice studio and slept there with Bora unnie and Hyolyn unnie.”

Soyou then said, “Getting picked up? We didn’t have anything like that. We had to walk to work even after we debuted. You’re working in a really good environment right now. But if your skills still don’t improve, then you should quit.”

I love the way it's translated in the actual episode: "What you have is better than what most trainees had, and if you can't improve despite all these benefits, you really should quit training in general."

Queen Soyou laying it out.

I wonder if all trainees have better privileges now and not just those going through reality shows. I'm still kinda :| at Winner's dorm and that's PRE-DEBUT.

right?!? i think back at that bigbang doc in their lil dorm, and sleeping in one room, practicing in that old yg training room...and i'm all "go on, gd, spent that money on your chrome hearts! another $10,000 chair, top? You do you, baby. Treat yo self." Remembering seungri sleeping at the bus station? "Go ahead and roam around europe, with your cute panda booty."

+1 @ this whole comment, although your comments about the BB members made me laugh a bit.

in Mix&Match DVD, they talked about everyone came to the dorm even when there's no practice (and taping i guess), so at least a dorm is provided there.

I am so bad because at first I thought "wow, that's really admirable. She's such a hard worker and she's giving these trainees a dose of reality."

Then I thought "Hmm 'I'd slept there with Bora unnie and Hyolyn unnie' Where is Dasom? She's not spending late nights practicing her dancing? Well...I can see that"

yeah i think it would be a matter of her living closer. i was going to say maybe it was bc seh was a minor and wasn't allowed to do that but the age difference between dasom and soyou isn't that much

In a way I agree with her and love that she said this, but I can't pretend I'm not super glad groups are getting it slightly better these days because for years, companies have been able to get away with literal slave labor and although someone like SM can get away with it, I feel like people are becoming much more suspicious of the idol machine than they were when I first got into kpop, and that that is making it harder for small companies to screw over their employees (especially as more idols come out against their companies, like that guy from ZE:A - even if they did hush him up eventually, he really, really outed them)

I really love how realistic she's about it and how she's not afraid to tell it like it is.

Speaking of the conditions that trainees are in though, it always makes me suprised, because idols like Sistar and Secret and EXO for example always speak of the things that they have had to go through, which are pretty bad in itself, but then the first generation of idols always remind them that they've had it even worse. Just makes me wonder what it was like back then..

She's right but at the same, going through hardship can give you chances to grow as a person/an artist that people who are comfortable don't necessarily get.
