Actor Choi Min Soo refused to receive his Golden Acting Award for the 2014 MBC Drama Awards. Even the speech that he asked Baek Jin Hee to give instead of him was edited out, making the audience curious about its content.
According to Star News, which revealed the original copy of the speech, the edited out part indirectly mentioned the Sewol ferry accident on April 16, and his grief toward the tragedy.
Choi Min Soo did not show up at the “2014 MBC Drama Awards,” which was held on December 30, although he won the Golden Acting Award through the drama “Pride and Prejudice.”
To fill his absence, co-actor Baek Jin Hee received the award for him. She also delivered the speech Choi Min Soo gave him which stated that he refused to receive the award, astonishing the crowd.
“Hello, this is Moon Hi Man from the Public Security team,” Choi Min Soo said through the speech, introducing himself as his character from “Pride and Prejudice.” He added, “I am most thankful to MBC, director Kim Jin Man, and script writer Lee Hyun Joo for giving me the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful drama despite my old age. Most of all, I would like to thank the viewers of “Pride and Prejudice” for all their love and support. I would also like to show my gratitude to our Incheon Public Security team.”
He continued, “I’m currently living the life of a prosecutor who executes the law [through the drama]. It would only make sense for me to receive this award if I deserve it. Therefore, I am sorry to say that I most sincerely refuse this award.”
However, the rest of his speech was unable to go out on the air due to complications, and Baek Jin Hee added, “Choi Min Soo might have refused this award, but I’ll make sure to pass it on.”
In the part of his speech which was not revealed, Choi Min Soo said, “This is the least I can do for society’s conscience and hope lost in the deep, cold sea during the times of a failing law, lack of common sense, and loss of any morsel of truth.” He added, “You’ll still stick with ‘Pride and Prejudice’ until the finale, right?”
Though he did not directly mention it, it seems that his speech made a reference to the Sewol ferry accident, which took place this past April 16. Even in a recent interview with Star News, Choi Min Soo mentioned the Sewol accident, saying, “As an adult of this society, I feel great remorse and responsibility towards this accident.”

Date: 2014-12-31 03:42 pm (UTC)i understand why he would refuse the award and mcb really shouldn't mess with the editing... if they give someone an award, why are they suddenly cutting their speech? airing it would cause a smaller convtroversy (if any) than the decision of omitting.

welp.
I feel being a no show and not excepting the award is 1 thing (I don't even understand how he got it...don't all these awards only go to people who attend? Also I've seen that drama and really???), but if he was going to go all in he should have said those words himself.
Four for BJH, girl took years to get to where she is and is now most likely to take the hit for this.

Date: 2014-12-31 06:04 pm (UTC)i'm only disappointed that baek jin hee had to deliver the speech (although it wouldn't make sense if he showed up himself only to say he refuses it) because the focus of the speech was supposed to be on the sewol ferry, and not that he's playing a prosecutor. the whole situation is rather fishy with the speech getting cut off but...
choi min soo has always exercised his ideal of justice and this lies according to that.
also just in case if anyone brings up the assault controversy from 2007 - choi min soo was a victim of yellow journalism and media play when 73 year old man who owns a restaurant where lee myung bak (the last president) and his party members were eating that morning. there was a traffic jam in front of the restaurant as the man's waiters were trying to prevent a bmw from getting towed from their restaurant. choi min soo got off the car, blocked the waiters, let the towing truck take the bmw, and then got attacked by the waiters.
the media reported that choi min soo threw the man onto the ground but the actual ytn footage shows that he merely pushed the man onto the chair as self-defense and the witnesses report that while there was a physical altercation no one was hitting anyone and when the 73 year old man fell by himself people stopped them. the problem occurred when the 73 year old man called the police claiming that choi had hit him, and choi felt that he no longer needed to be there, got back in his car and stepped his foot off the brakes when the 73 year old man jumped into the passenger seat of choi's car demanding him to stay. choi drove 500m with the man in his seat before he stopped. police came, they discussed the situation, everything was all good, and police declared it no case.
the real issue started the next day when the media pulled out a headline saying that choi had driven 50m with a man stuck to his car door. there was two false witness reports and the 73 year old man turned in a doctor's diagnosis note and claimed that choi had punched him several times with his fist etc, kukinews reported the incident with many false and overblown claims. the news took flight, and it was reported everywhere, with only hearsay and the 73 year old's man's claims as evidence.
choi held a press conference only saying that his sin is that he was not respectful to my elder and was not careful with his words and hurt the man's feelings, and those should be enough for choi to feel guilty. his image was already ruined so instead of claiming his innocence he took a very long break living in the mountains. (source including the video and everything: http://blog.daum.net/jdkal/13492813)
what choi experienced was basically what happened in pinocchio, a small incident where victims were not at fault but the media made them the perpetrators to a point that they couldn't say anything.
choi min soo has a weird mindset on how he views the world but he's genuinely a good person and a good actor and it really frustrated me to see how he got so much shit for something he hasn't done.
