Plot:
The drama depicts the last six months of Park Jung Hwan's life, one of the prosecutors working on anti-corruption department. Before the brain tumor takes his life, he is determined to expose the frauds and misconducts committed by his superior, Lee Tae Joon. He also struggles to make amends with his ex-wife Shin Ha Kyung and their daughter Ye Rin, for all his indifferent attitudes in the past.
Lee Tae Joon (Jo Jae Kyun) is the Public Prosecutor General, a jovial man with a thick Kyungsangdo accent who hums trot songs all day long. He’s got the outward appearance and personality of a gregarious village chief, while hiding an ice-cold disposition underneath. He’s famous for stripping countless prosecutors of their jobs, and has a long history of backdoor illegal activity, which he naturally keeps under wraps. Shin Ha-kyung (Kim A-joong) is a prosecutor who has refused extremely high-paying jobs at large firms, and instead fights for justice.
Park Jung-Hwan (Kim Rae-Won) is the chief of the anti-corruption investigation team for the Supreme Prosecutors' Office. To get to his position, he has made compromises on achieving justice. Park Jung-Hwan then learns that he has a malignant brain tumor and does not have much time to left. To end his life without regrets, he points a gun at corrupt Public Prosecutor General Lee Tae-Joon (Cho Jae-Hyun). Park Jung-Hwan’s ex-wife Shin Ha-Gyung (Kim A-Joong), who is also a prosecutor, knows about Park Jung-Hwan’s situation and helps him. (Asianwiki)
The drama will be about prosecutors high-up in the supreme court — the hero is a chief investigative prosecutor named Park Jeong-hwan (Kim Rae-won) who finds out he has six months left to live, and on the other side is a prosecutor general Lee Tae-joon (Jo Jae-Kyun) who’s neck-deep in corruption. The drama follows the last six months of the hero’s life after he finds out he’s dying, and is described as “the story of a man who throws his final punch at the world, as he says farewell to this life.(Dramabeans)

Date: 2014-12-25 08:16 am (UTC)Where as Kim Ah Joong, I loved her in 200 Pound Beauty, so I was really surprised when I saw her in the trailers for Punch, the amount of PS she's done over the years has taken a toll on her face, and that was all I noticed during the trailers. It's so so bad of me, but I couldn't help it. It's just a shame, that's all.

Date: 2014-12-25 08:11 am (UTC)Lee Jong Suk's face scares me even more. The amount of plastic. I know it's shallow, but I can't help it. As much as I loved "I Hear Your Voice" the back of my mind kept prodding me to shake my head at how disastrous his plastic surgery has been. Like it's catastrophically BAD. Michael Jackson circa 1990 BAD. But hey, I guess it's working for him since he has an army of fans.

Date: 2014-12-25 01:59 am (UTC)But it looks great. I didn't watch the PD's/writer's (?) previous drama The Chaser but I heard good things. I watched some of Empire of Gold that I think they also did but I think it's something I have to be in a certain mood for. Maybe I'll try again, later.

Date: 2014-12-25 02:09 am (UTC)*sigh* I guess I should catch up with P&P but once they lost that snappy flirting dynamic from the first episode my attention dropped

Date: 2014-12-25 10:06 am (UTC)I love this screenwriter's work and Punch is basically a mixture of Empire of Gold and The Chaser. I was hoping they'd cast Son Hyun Joo and Ryu Seung Soo again but unfortunately the latter's appearance was short-lived.
Kim Ah Joong and Kim Rae Won are killing it and Kim Ji Young is so precious. When she was talking to her dad at night, she made me tear up.
I already thought that Tae Joon from Empire of Gold was an asshole but Jung Hwan manged to beat that, he even used their daughter and his disease to emotionally manipulate his ex-wife.
I'm wondering how the redemption arc will be played out, because a life threatening disease obviously didn't turn him into a good guy. It slowly started last episode but I'm not buying his sudden I-want-to-protect-my-family-because-I'm-dying-schtick yet.
I love the fact that Ha Gyung is not used as a plot device for Jung Hwan. She's a real character, a mom, who wants to protect her child and an ex-wife, who still hasn't forgotten her ex-husband and above all is her sense righteousness.
There's also no bad-because-I'm-bad-villain but instead they're complex characters and make you wonder how did they turn out to be like this. I dislike the fact that many dramas are painted as black and white but in this case we got millions of shades in between.

I checked the tags for drama and tv show and was like, "Where is the post?" Also the Soompi thread is tiny. Dramabeans did a recap and there are like 9 comments...I'm glad you're here
I love the impact of knowing shit is going down when you see his name on the phone calling.
I rewatch when subs come out to fully grasp it because of the words I don't know in Korean but I should just wait for subs lol

Date: 2014-12-25 04:22 pm (UTC)It's a shame that the really good dramas don't receive enough attention, at least the reactions are domestically better than internationally. Ironically, I don't like dramas that much, which are really popular among international fans aka "hallyu dramas" e.g Pinocchio rn. I prefer the underdogs, e.g. Empire of Gold, The Queen's Classroom, King of Dramas, 2 Weeks.
I'm glad you're here
I'm really glad you made this post and I'm not watching this alone.
Oh yaaas, everyone freezes and stares at their phones as if the devil is calling.
Kudos to you! I couldn't watch complex dramas like Punch or Empire of Gold unsubbed. My Korean level is like on A2, so I can watch stupid, fluffy rom-coms or family dramas without subs but that's it. I should learn new vocabulary and practice more, but I'm too lazy.

Date: 2014-12-25 06:10 pm (UTC)My Korean isn't where I can watch them unsubbed either lol...I just try to try
I almost made a few posts for dramas that ended to see if anyone watched lol...before I quit The Greatest Marriage I almost made a post for that too

Date: 2014-12-25 09:15 pm (UTC)I do that, too. But then I'm too lazy and figure out that probably no one watched it. I used to post discussion posts for Hotel King but goodness gracious, this drama was a terrible snoozefest despite the reunion of the My Girl otp, I stopped watching the drama and except for me only two people commented anyway. So... /shrugs I only manged to finish it recently with ff.
lol I used to read recaps for The Greatest Marriage but even the recapper stopped and I'm not keen on watching it myself.

Date: 2014-12-25 09:19 pm (UTC)I would go there to see how she was reacting after watching it only to realize she stopped watching LOL...I gave up two weeks ago...I basically fast forwarded the entire episode but I'm going to finish it on fast forward at least

Date: 2014-12-27 02:08 am (UTC)I finished my thesis and now I can go back wasting my time gif-ing dramas again. ^^v Jang Hyuk's new dramas is airing soon too so you have no idea how happy I am. 8D I wanted him to go back acting in sageuk so now I'm all excited hoho

Date: 2014-12-27 10:08 pm (UTC)I also have to do lots of stuff for uni... I should finish it soon and take less naps 8D.
I'm not sure, if I should look forward to Shine or Go Crazy, because Oh Yeon Seo is not my favorite female lead but I'll give it a shot at least.

Date: 2014-12-28 12:49 am (UTC)Actually, I did go 'Ohhhhh noooooes!!' when she was announced haha. But I did watch Jang Bori's last episode to see what the fuss about the drama (I thought the drama is really pretentious) and she seemed very likeable and now I'm kinda excited. The drama has potential to be like Yisan where husband and wife hand in hand work together and I always love that kind of story esp if its a historical drama. 8D

Date: 2014-12-31 03:23 am (UTC)The only unfortunate thing about Shine or Go Crazy for me is the title of the drama. Who thought it will be a good idea for a sageuk to get that name. I'm embarrassed even to type it ahaha XD Actually I wanted the drama to have 50++ episodes in hope that it will be able for Jang Hyuk to bag the MBC Daesang for next year (Plus I want to watch him every week for 6 months ;_;). I want him to collect all Daesang from all TV stations before he's too old to do that hehe. 8D

Date: 2014-12-31 03:53 pm (UTC)The title is really tacky, lmao then he should've joined Splendid Politics instead, whose plot sounds to me more interesting than Shine or Go Crazy's plot. He's the kind of an actor, who'd really deserve to win the daesangs from all channels.

Date: 2014-12-26 03:19 am (UTC)However, while I love courtroom drama so much (The Practice & Boston Legal are one of my faves), Korean courtroom stories always fall behind in term of interesting cases or argument in court. I know this drama wont spent much time in the courtroom but hopefully when it does, I wont feel stupid or underwhelmed on how it was handled by the writer..

Date: 2014-12-26 06:24 am (UTC)The last scene of him and Soo Ae in A Thousand Day Promise made me cry -- he just hug her and said 'Its Okay.. It's Okay..' and when he said at her grave: "I'm not ready yet..', he made me cry even more lol. My God after 2 years of taking care a women that basically didn't remember you, you still said you're not ready yet?!! Where do I sign to get this kind of husband too? XD
Will definitely watch this drama later. I'm now catching up with my K-movies and I probably will start watching this when Jang Hyuk's new drama start airing next week. :D

Date: 2014-12-26 06:49 am (UTC)That one where they are making him, as the King, the bad guy? Man I don't know about all these historically revisionist dramas lately LOL

Date: 2014-12-26 07:30 am (UTC)I wish it will be great like Tree With Deep Roots and hopefully he wont die in this but he probably will so I already prepared for it lol. I want him to act again in sageuk after FTLY so I'm more than happy to hear about his next project ^^v

Date: 2014-12-26 11:03 am (UTC)I just realized I'm talking about the Cha Seung Won sageuk...I remember the Jang Hyuk one now. The super quick marriage right
no subject
Date: 2014-12-26 01:18 pm (UTC)Yeah, it was the quick marriage plot though mostly all sageuk involved that kind of marriage considering most of the marriages at that time are arranged marriage. But arrange marriage plot always intrigued me so you have no idea how all of these make me anticipate the drama even more. ^^v

Date: 2014-12-26 04:08 pm (UTC)Literally the only thing of hers I've watched in full and I keep defending her in it because it was great. The killing of EVERYONE who wasn't required by history was a bit uncool though...it was like Why? King Sejong is all alone now!
no subject
Date: 2014-12-27 12:58 am (UTC)At the end where everyone die except the King is very sad tbh -- but I guess at that time I already get used for leads to die in historical dramas so my acceptance level is already very high lol. But I guess its important to show the great sacrifices that everyone has to make for the creation of the letters. I mean, they even killed the cute crown prince (I dont know who is the actor but I did cry when Han Suk Kyu put him in his arm T___T). I mean, despite living, the King must feel the most sad since he's all alone now. I really feel for him when he start noticing all the small things at his palace (the small flowers, how blue is the sky & etc..) when people that he loves or used to be beside him are no longer there -- a familiar place becomes unfamiliar to him. Gah, I really love the script -- I thought it was brilliant! 8DD

Date: 2014-12-28 10:04 am (UTC)I have some problems with casting, though. I am waiting a u-turn from that old man with Minister of Justice.
Because I have never seen him as a good guy before. Same goes with Kang Jae, that man was one of the
loyal characters in TWDR and I am like "noo, you can't be a bad man" ,lol.
The hospital scene was so emotional when the douche-bag doctor told him that it's three months left and he went outside, saw the ad of 2015 :(
Also Kim Rae Won, man he looks so good in this drama:D
