INTERVIEW WITH STAR Q
Last June, Mamamoo released their first mini-album, ‘HELLO’ and spread their name because of their singing skills and performances. Within 5 months they have come back with their new song, ‘Piano Man’ and have quickly established themselves as a talented group. Among the members of Mamamoo is Hwa Sa, whom we quizzed about her own life episodes.
HwaSa
Q. Hwa Sa’s ‘real story’ is?
1. In elementary school I was class president for the month of March.
2. When I was 7, I went on a family vacation to Yeosu and became a missing child.
3. I became close to Whee In while having dance battles.
4. When I was in school, there was a time I weighted over 70kg.
- 1. In elementary school I was class president for the month of March.
▲ “Lie. In elementary school, I was especially into leadership. Every school year I got picked as the March class president, and in our class the most influential person would get chosen. I had a greed for it, so I couldn’t not do it. In April ~ May when we were cornered into art, music and physical education events I was also the class president.”
- 2. When I was 7, I went on a family vacation to Yeosu and became a missing child.
▲ “Correct. I don’t remember exactly, but I vaguely remember wandering around while sobbing. It was our first family vacation, and I was very adventurous, distracted and couldn’t keep still. There’s three daughters in our family so they couldn’t keep up with all of us and I disappeared. My parents tirelessly searched the train station for me. Thankfully, whatever I do, I do it loudly so my parents were able to find me. It was daybreak when they found me and I’d been missing for over 10 hours. After that, just hearing the word “Yeosu” is a bit scary. Not long ago there was a song called “Yeosu Night Sea” that got popular. The song brought up memories from that incident so it was a bit difficult for me to listen to.”
- 3. I became close to Whee In while having dance battles.
▲ “Lie. We became close while dancing together, not while battling. We first came to know each other in middle school where we were in the same class. We also attended the same high school and when we started dancing together there, we really became close.”
- 4. When I was in school, there was a time I weighted over 70kg.
▲ “Lie. Honestly, it was 65kg. Even now, the thing I’m most reluctant to do is post old photos. I was pretty ugly then. In elementary school, I was really weak. At that time I wouldn’t gain weight no matter what I ate. My dad would buy meat 6 days out of the week. He’d buy me anything I said I wanted to eat. Even when finances weren’t stable, he’d still buy any foods I wanted so I gained a lot of weight. Before I became a trainee I dieted really hard.”
MoonStar
Q. Moonbyul’s ‘real story’ is?
1. In middle school I won 1st place in a carol contest.
2. I was an SM trainee in the past.
3. In elementary school I’ve played hooky because of Dong Bang Shin Ki sunbaenims.
4. When I was young I was hit by a car.
- 1. In middle school I won 1st place in a carol contest.
▲ “Lie. When I was in my 3rd year of middle school, a carol contest was held. Some of my friends and I went up for it as class representatives. We mixed a carol with a pop song (Big Bang sunbaenim’s ‘Last Farewell’). We practiced really hard, coming up with the song and choreography. The reaction we got was amazing. People in the auditorium were saying we should win first place, but unfortunately because it wasn’t strictly a carol and we mixed it with a pop song, we got 2nd place. I remember winning a box of snacks as the prize. Back then I really thought it was a shame.”
- 2. I was an SM trainee in the past.
▲ “Lie. I wasn’t an SM Entertainment trainee, but in my first year of high school I attended SM Academy in order to possibly enter SM Entertainment. I learned many things at SM Academy and went to auditions. There were performances where we danced to SM groups’ songs. SM Academy is where I really began my dream of being a singer.”
- 3. In elementary school I’ve played hooky because of Dong Bang Shin Ki sunbaenims.
▲ “Lie. When I was in middle school I’d lie to my mom about going to after school tutoring and go up on the rooftop of a huge mart with my friends. We’d go play at places where you could listen to music. My mom would call me a lot, but I wouldn’t pick up and just put on my headphones and listen to my favorite music. Back then I would listen to Dong Bang Shin Ki sunbaenims. But there was a time when I got caught red-handed when my mom was standing right behind me. When we got home she scolded me a lot, telling me not to lie and making me promise. Haha.”
4. When I was young I was hit by a car.
▲ “Correct. When I was little, I was going to a mudflat with my family. When the car was being parked, I saw bug on the ground and was amazed by it. I called out saying, “Auntie, come look at this”. I’d lost my senses and at that time a mini-bus was coming toward me. I got hit by it. The driver was a grandfather who had been drinking. I was loaded up and taken to the hospital operating room. I had to have surgery on my chin and ankle, but luckily I wasn’t severely hurt.”
WheeIn
Q. Whee In’s ‘real story’ is?
1. In elementary school, I won the grand prize in Jeollabuk-do’s writing composition contest.
2. I was almost held back because I didn’t go to school.
3. My favorite snacks are honey-flavored.
4. When I was young, there was a time I got burned badly.
- 1. In elementary school, I won the grand prize in Jeollabuk-do’s writing composition contest.
▲ “Correct. In 5th grade, there was a writing contest with the topic of how to create a clean river and the whole school participated. It was the first time for me to write a pre-selected prompt, and I just couldn’t think of anything. I went on a walk for a minute and very roughly sketched out some ideas. The contest included the elementary, middle and high schoolers in Jeollabuk-do and I ended up winning 1st place. It’s dumbfounding to hear that I won 1st place, isn’t it? It made me feel good, but at the same time it was ridiculous to think [I won].”
- 2. I was almost held back because I didn’t go to school.
▲ “Lie. I was not almost held back for not attending school. I really liked wandering around and going on bus trips by myself, so in middle school I would lie a bit to my mom and homeroom teacher. Of course that’s called ‘playing hooky’. I’d lived in the same neighborhood since I was 6 years old, and there you can ride the bus downtown in 40 minutes. I’ve had times when I rode the bus there alone. I also remember hot summer days, riding the bus to go get ice cream. These memories remain in my mind.”
- 3. My favorite snacks are honey-flavored.
▲ “Lie. I can’t say the name of the specific snack, so I’ll just call it ‘honey snack’. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I grew up in my grandmother’s (mom’s side) hand. She raised me. One day, the grandmother I lived with for 17 years was in great pain. At the time I was going through puberty so I would get mad at her often. We went to the hospital together, but I only acted annoyed about it. I wanted to eat the honey snack so I asked my grandmother to buy it for me. However, at the hospital we ended up finding out that my grandmother had cancer. After finding that out, it wasn’t even a couple of months before she passed away. I regretted like crazy asking her to buy that honey snack for me. Even when I just see that snack my heart feels blocked. Since then, I haven’t eaten the honey snack again.”
- 4. When I was young, there was a time I got burned badly.
▲ “Lie. I’ve only heard about it, but when I was at the baby stage of being able to crawl, I was playing below my grandmother while she washed dishes. I pulled out glacial acetic acid from the sink drawer and spilled it on myself. I had a scar on my thigh about the size of my palm. It was a big scar, but thankfully it has faded. That area is clear now.”
Solar
Q. Solar’s ‘real story’ is?
1. I have a laughter therapy license.
2. All of my fingernails have fallen off before.
3. I was born underweight.
4. I once had a job as a travel guide.
- 1. I have a laughter therapy license.
▲ “Correct. When I was in school all of the kids in my grade were acquiring licenses and the teacher told me that since I laughed well and was bright that I should try for a recreational license. I worked hard and got ‘Recreation Leader Level 1’, ‘Laughter Therapy’, and ‘Fun Leadership’ licenses. I didn’t know it at the time, but it’s a rare license to get and difficult to utilize if you’re not a person of that system. So now, it just remains as a nice memory.”
- 2. All of my fingernails have fallen off before.
▲ “Lie. All of my fingernails didn’t fall off, but 4 of them have fallen off before. When I was around 5 years old I was on the way to go play with my family. I was sleeping in the car and when we reached the restaurant and I tried to get out I got my hand stuck in the doorway. My mom wasn’t paying attention and closed the door on my hand. Four of my fingernails fell off and blood was rushing out. I had to go to the hospital. It happened when I was young so I don’t really remember it, but even when I think about it now it’s horrible.”
- 3. I was born underweight.
▲ “Lie. I wasn’t born underweight. Even at the hospital they were surprised because I was born so healthy. If you look at photos you will see I was so chubby. Even more, at my first birthday the ring didn’t fit me. I’ve also heard that there weren’t any diapers that would fit me and they had to get a special extra-large size.”
- 4. I once had a job as a travel guide.
▲ “Lie. My major was tourism related and my teacher kept recommending being a tour guide to me because they thought I’d like it. I ended up switching my major to music, but if I hadn’t changed at that time then I may have eventually become a travel guide.”
