Seo Kang Joon Considered for New Historical Drama

Seo Kang Joon has reportedly received a casting offer for the male lead, Hong Joo Won, in the upcoming MBC historical drama “Hwajung” (working title). The Monday-Tuesday drama will air in spring. He has yet to make a final decision.

The character Hong Joo Won will be the eldest son from an elite family during the Joseon Dynasty. His character will be a genius who doesn’t hold back from saying harsh comments to high-ranking officials. Hong Joo Won will experience love and betrayal with Princess Jeongmyeong (a real historical princess). His character will embark upon a journey of making the world a better place. The role of Princess Jeongmyeong will be played by Lee Yeon Hee.

Seo Kang Joon is currently acting in KBS 2TV’s weekend drama “What’s With This Family?” and is receiving favorable reviews about his good looks and acting skills. If Seo Kang Joon takes the offer for “Hwajung,” he will have to prepare for the role after finishing “What’s With This Family?”

“Hwajung” will be centered on Princess Jeongmyeong who was born as a princess, but must disguise herself as dead due to power struggles. Cha Seung Won and Lee Yeon Hee have confirmed their roles and “Hwajung” is slated to broadcast next spring after “Shine or Go Crazy” which will follow up “Pride and Prejudice.”

I need a good historical drama, so yaay. I hope this will be good, and my babe is getting a lead role ♡♡♡
I'm not sure if a can commit to a 50+ episodes long drama, so I'm still hesitant to start What’s With This Family, but if I managed to get trough the train wreck that was Cunning Lady for his pretty face, I might give it a try.

50+ eps? Dear lord, no. I mean, obv Western tv series have around that many eps, broken into a few seasons, but watching the same plot drag out for that long. I don't think I could take it.

Yeap. I already tried one or two melodramas around the same number of eps, but I would stop around the 20th, if not sooner.. The only one I did finish was Ojakgyo Brothers, but I did skip trough a lot. By the end I was only watching the OTP's scenes.

50++ episodes of daily or weekend dramas are a no-no unless you like watching where they take everything slowly. I only can stomach 50++ episodes of historical dramas since they tend to be amazing and full of action. ;3

I don't think he is ready for such a role, I mean a sageuk with 50 episodes as a lead :o
For me he is an okay-actor, whose flaws are often overlooked because of his mesmerizing eyes, all-round prettiness and charm.

How did you guys know that this drama will be 50 episodes? I dont think he will be the lead since Cha Seung Won is in this drama also. But I wonder what role he will play -- knowing Kdrama, he could be Yeon Hee's father or potential lover lol

I read it on dramabeans a while ago when they announced the other two leads. Cha Seung Won will play Lee Yeon Hee's half-brother, so I think Kang Joon will play her love interest. You are right, Cha Seung Won will most certainly be more important to the plot, but Kang Joon will nonetheless play one of the three leads (if he should accept).

But I'm not holding my breath for it, sageuks are always labelled as the most difficult kind of k-dramas.

honestly he isn't ready to be a lead in a sageuk with 50 episodes. he's a barely tolerable actor but gets by on his beauty and general likability. that will turn 180 on him if he flops in this drama though, it'll tank his career's momentum. if he gets a lead role, it should be in a rom com 16 episode drama or something. everyone will love it and him and then he can worry about more serious roles.

this girl though.. i've seen her in two dramas and lord she truly can't act. i don't understand how she is getting all these roles when her dramas tank and no one thinks she's any good. the plot isn't too bad though. i'd actually be super interested in it if the girl could act. since this drama is centered on her. why couldn't they cast princess Moon Chae Won or did she sign her life over to KBS.

MTE about SKJ. I like him but saeguks are heavy and difficult.

I admit I'm kind of biased but Lee Yeon Hee is impressive in Miss Korea with her suddenly improved acting and new charisma. She basically embodied her character. So I want to root for her and hope she'll continue her success streak like Go Ara after Reply 1994.

same. im more bummed Sung Joon is being 2nd/3rd male lead in Hyun Bin's vanity project. I adore Hyun Bin but the drama sounds awful. im not here for the 50 personalities thing everyone is playing at the same slot. i never watched witch's romance minus the first episode but he was charming and a gem plus his cameo in mama. im pumped for his future. he's one of the few new handsome actors i actually believe has skill. the others, honestly are just beautiful and im praying for them to show skill at some point.

rom coms are always a safe smart option for pretty boy actors that lets them use their charms to coast by or let them surprise us with their comedic timing and execution. i really need the marriage not dating leads to get offers soon. they were wonderful and they're being slept on rn.

Not really sure about his acting skills but it sounds iffy from that perspective

Actually I'm more just concerned with his appearance, sure he's gorgeous but it's a very modern gorgeous and I don't think it would suit a historical drama (like seeing Jaejoong in a 전립 makes me laugh at how wrong it looks)

Idk I remember reading an interview with a director and he said he chose between 2 actresses who were equally qualified but it was a period piece and one suited the look more. It definitely plays a part in how immersed the viewer is in what they are watching, the other actors could be made to suit the period more imo with the right styling of course
