Date: 2014-12-22 03:23 pm (UTC)It's a traditional dance/challenge performed by a group. It's originally from the Maori people in New Zealand but peoples from nearby islands also have their Haka. The Haka could be used before battle, so it is associated with war, but that's not originally the case, and there are different hakas for different situations. It's an important part of the Maori culture, and it bears an important meaning, that's why I'm shocked when people from other cultures appropriate it.
The Haka became well-known worldwide through rugby competition (I'm totally in this case, I'm French, and didn't know much about Maoris before). The New Zealander national team performs a haka before international plays. You can check on Youtube, you'll find a lot of videos.
If you want to realize how intense it can get, I would advise to check the one time the French national team decided to form a wall, holding each other by the shoulders, and walk to be a few centimeters away from the New Zealander team. Chills all over.
Edit: I'm not Maori myself so I'm not the right person to talk about this. I hope I haven't said anything wrong/offensive and that it will make you want to learn more about Maoris :)
