Interview with The Pony

PONY – Kim Won Jun(guitar) Kwon Woo Suk(drum) Yoo Seung Bo(bass) Choi Sang Min(vocal, syntheziser)
Flower Boy Band, Hongdae F4 etc, nicknames everyone wants but can't get, the 4 member band who wants to get rid of those names, The Pony. They hate those names, they hate the cute album jacket, they hate the promotion photo, that has too much of a form, the four discontented(?)'s name actually became various kinds of subjects between the people before their album release. Because The label Ruby Salon Records where all the hot live bands these days like Black skirts, Guckkasten, Galaxy Express etc. come together and the label Beat Ball Music, which showed the albums of teams our love doesn't stop, like Mongoose, Linus' Blanket etc; those two labels plant to coproduce Pony's album. That those two labels together wanted to produce Pony's album must clearly mean that their music has enough charm.
We met the four members of Pony, who are expressing the energy of an untroubled youth like a force feeling from the title, not needing a beautiful package for the song called '밤새 미친 사랑을 나눠요'.
Some time ago you brought out your full length album. How is the reaction?
[Seung Bo] They said they like it. Leaving out such things as Flower Boys. There are parts, things beside music that are contrary to aim. What we want to change, if we just could change it, is the album jacket, promotion photo.
[Sang Min] The promotion photo was shot with too much form... and the words. We want to change 'sexy rock 'n' roll'.
[Seung Bo] Flower guys, those too. And the album title.
(The Pony's album title is [PONY] - what is the title you want to change it to?)
[Sang Min] Disturbance. But because of this and that circumstance it became [PONY].
We know that when you started The Pony, you didn't consist of the four members you are now. How did you meet?
[Won Jun] Sang Min was in a band called Perouges and I also was in another band. I was helping out and said 'let’s do a band' and it started. Drum and bass were other members, Sang Min liked Woo Suk and Woo Suk wanted to come into our band and so we came together. Seung Bo was in another band, we met him at a performance and talked with him, then we came together.
We know that there's a little difference between your ages. Is it that you spend time together threatening your hyung respectful?*
[Sang Min] Hyung treatment, there isn't such a thing.
[Woo Suk] Because Hyung has no sense ... (laughter)
(What are you usually doing when you meet?)
[Sang Min] Performing.
You made your album together with Kim Sung Soo PD (Mongoose, Lee Juck etc album Producer, Musical Dae Jang Geum, 200 Pounds beauty etc Music Director), I heard he was angry a lot. There also seem to be a lot of things you've learned.
[Sang Min] We came without practicing, didn't kept the promised times and he was angry.
[Woo Suk] But all he said was right.
[Won Jun] He gave a lot of essential advices, so he helped us.
[Seung Bo] We got to know what is good.
How did you come to make a band?
[Seung Bo] I wanted to be awesome. (laughter)
[Sang Min] I also wanted to make a movie and to write, it seems easy to do music in between. (Trying it for real, was it easy?) It seemed easy before releasing an album. (laughter)
[Woo Suk] You want to try it once. When I was little my father gave me music from the Beatles to listen to, because such a thing remains, unconsciously I thought of wanting to try it once.
[Won Jun] If there would be something I could do better than that, I would do it.
You brought out a single last year, out of that the songs '밤새 미친 사랑을 나눠요' and '왼편에서' are also included on the full length album. '밤새 미친 사랑을 나눠요' really became different.
[Sang Min] What is better?

Because we put money into it. (laughter)
Before you went into producing an album, I saw you live. I can remember that time Sang Min was just singing. I heard that before you and Won Jun played together guitar, nowadays you play also the keyboard at performances?
[Sang Min] Yes, I want to play guitar, but I don't have one. I sold it to buy a synthesizer. (laughter)
You were once considered a spot at broadcasting; I heard that four songs didn't pass. How was your feeling? ('당겨주오', '목이 말라 죽겠어요(original)' - violent lyrics / 'disturbance' - producing sense of incongruity / '밤새 미친 사랑을 나눠요' - suggestive lyrics were the reason.)
[Seung Bo] I like it. I'm like a villain. (laughter)
[Sang Min] But when you watch TV, there are lyrics more suggestive than ours. It's weird to think that '당겨주오' couldn't pass the consideration. If it is because of 'bullet', why is Baek Ji Young's 'like hit by a bullet' ok?
(Because there are lyrics that deal with social issues, it maybe was seen more carefully.)
So we need to consider 'Cash Bag' and '아름다운 계절'...
Pretty things are good too, but when things are too pretty people get disgusted of it. So I, personally, welcome The Pony's appearance. There are also people talking about how nice it would be if The Pony would do well at the top.
[Sang Min] I'm hearing such stories for the first time. Would be nice to hear them a lot, so that they become a burden. Because we didn't have so many burdens, we released our album and took a rest for a week at home. (laughter)
If they want or not, The Pony's visual part is emphasized, talked about and illustrated. Since your style is nice, you get clothes sponsored.
[Woo Suk] But the truth is, if you just go to Hongdae, there are a lot of people better looking than us. Hearing those things and seeing the truth, isn't it a bit disappointing?
[Sang Min] What we are wearing now is sponsored.
The title song is '두 번째 넌', it's a song going into the ears, but aren't there pitiful points that this is the title song?
[Sang Min] '두 번째 넌' is good. Because of the image that generally flows like this with the jacket and the words, we took it.
[Seung Bo] Out of the songs it's the one jumping out the most. If it's a title song it has to be one where the color of the band comes out. The aspect that we searched the most popular song and decided for this one is a bit pitiful.
[Woo Suk] But whatever song we take, the direction of thinking will change. Because songs with different colors come together, it's hard to represent The Pony with just one song.
How come No Shi Hyun (Gavi NJ) participated in the song '두 번째 넌'?
[Seung Bo] She’s a friend of mine. People know her as a girl who got exhausting vocal training and is singing songs. Of course this is also the truth but as a friend she harmonizes with me. Because people don't know that aspect, I worried they would see it not so good. Shi Hyun said it would be a nice opportunity and I also asked her to do it together. I think the outcome is nice too.
You watch out for being called a garage band.
[Won Jun] Garage is right. But I hate being bound with this the whole time.
[Sang Min] Because we are called garage together with other bands, I'm afraid they'll stick us together as one. So that's why we worked hard to get rid of it. We included a lot of programming to try many different things besides the organization.
I heard a lot of stories that after making the album your live performance got better. How is it?
[Seung Bo] We don't know if we maybe get that fascinated and extend the performance days in future. It’s fun.
[Sang Min] It’s fun to do it, having no idea. When you think, it becomes like a work. If you do it like work, it's not making music.
Lastly, if there are things you want to achieve as The Pony, what are these? Even if it is an absurd dream.
[Seung Bo] It’s just my thought, but if it is either with band or personally, culturally, for the generation, I want to become an icon. I continuously want to rise up criticism.
[Woo Suk] If it is a past dream, I want to be a band also known overseas. And a band whose name absolutely becomes a subject at festivals.
[Won Jun] Because we brought out an album and stepped into the music world, I want this to be the stepping-stone for a long, well doing time.
