Lee Hi revealed a story regarding her agency’s head producer Yang Hyun Suk.
Lee Hi formed YG’s new unit Hi Suhyun along with Akdong Musician’s Lee Su Hyun, releasing the debut single I’m Different on November 11.
I’m Different is a song of the R&B/Soul genre, feauturing Lee Hi’s soulful voice along with Lee Suhyun’s clear vocals. It immediately ranked number one on various music sites in Korea, such as MelOn, Mnet, Olleh Music, Genie, Soribada, Monkey3, Naver Music, Daum Music and more.
During a recent interview carried out in a café in Mapo-gu, Lee Hi said, “I took about two years off but I had a lot of thoughts and concerns. I didn’t go a day without thinking about how I could grow in a good direction as a singer.”
“The result that I got after thinking a lot is that I’m a singer who does popular music and that I need to grow under the direction that people desire. I also have many things I want to do and genres that I like. I really like hip-hop music too. Since I have a lot of music that I like, I could challenge myself in the future in the genre of jazz or hip-hop. I personally would like to try them all. For now, I would like to continually challenge myself under what the public wants.”
When asked, “The new song is called I’m Different. How do you think singer Lee Hi is different compared to her colleague singers?” Lee Hi said, “I’m always nervous when I’m asked this question,” and shyly smiled. Lee Hi added, “I thought about what makes me different compared to the other singers but I don’t think that I’m greatly different from them. It’s just that my color is strong and I sing the songs that I can do well, and that’s what’s different about me.”
“I would like to try out many things. I often get offers to do collaborations from the other singers and I do want to take all the suggestions. It’s fun to see how a song changes when I sing it. I would like to challenge myself in different ways.”
She also shared a story related to head producer Yang Hyun Suk. According to Lee Hi, Yang Hyun Suk shows extra attention to Lee Hi compared to the other artists, wishing for her growth. About this, Lee Hi said, “Yang Hyun Suk gives a lot of attention in terms of my album’s producing. I think he puts a lot of limits overall with regards to things related to me. He’s particularly like that to me, especially,” adding, “I’m thankful each time I get suggestion for a collaboration. But in YG, things can only go forward when Yang Hyun Suk gives his permission so I think a collaboration can only happen once I get the permission from him.”
Lee Hi continued, “Yang Hyun Suk once told me that I have no aegyo. Unlike me, (Lee) Suhyun has a lot of aegyo. The tone of my voice is low so I can’t do aegyo like Lee Suhyun because it’s too hard,” and added, “I think my aegyo has been increasing without me realizing these days. That nuance and feel have ben increasing.”
Lee Suhyun said, “(Lee) Hi unnie gets into a better mood when it’s past 10 p.m. and enters dawn. She starts laughing more and begins dancing to music once it’s dawn. At first, I used to wonder, ‘what’s wrong with this unnie,’ but now I dance with her.”
Lee Hi shared, “I still feel like I’m the maknae of YG. Suhyun thinks I’m cute. She wants to raise me saying that I’m like a bunny. I think it’s partly because I’m short. I will be turning 20 next year but everyone still thinks I’m 16. I’m still like the maknae. I kind of want to continue being the maknae. I think it’s better and more comfortable being the maknae. I debuted before Akdong Musician did but since we released our albums at around the same time I don’t have much to tell them. Other YG hubaes did survival more than I did so all I can say to them is something like, ‘It’s more comfortable to sing like this.’”
She expressed her belief as a vocalist as well. Having stood out in the K-pop industry with her explosive vocals and charming voice, Lee Hi revealed her determination to keep working hard without settling down with her abilities. Lee Hi said, “I’m thankful just for the fact that I’m being called a vocalist. Just the fact that I’m being called that means that I need to enjoy music and need to know what I’m good at.”
“The most important thing is whether or not I can enjoy the music that I’m doing. No matter what you’re doing, I think it’s important to know what you’re doing and keep working hard to improve your unique abilities. I think it’s important not to settle with the present and think about what I can improve on in the future.”
As the last goal of this year, Lee Hi named Hi Suhyun’s success and release of her solo album for next year’s goal. Lee Hi said, “If I were to make a wish, it’s to tightly begin preparing for my solo album. I would also like to wish for Hi Suhyun’s success. I have my trust in Suhyun for now. She’s doing so well and is cute so I have no concerns regarding Suhyun.”
Having presented its debut stage on November 16 throgh SBS’ Inkigayo, Hi Suhyun will carry out its promotions through music broadcasts.

Date: 2014-12-01 06:28 am (UTC)sometimes I feel like YG is not secure about his artist abilities. IS2 is a perfect show to boast about company's talents and yg artists never show up... (maybe there's some political situation between yg and pd, who knows...)

Date: 2014-12-01 01:40 pm (UTC)maybe yg doesn't like his artists being judged in a show, idk.. it's indeed hard to understand what he thinks.
I hope the new generation changes this.

Date: 2014-11-30 10:37 pm (UTC)I like that she doesn't use a lot of aegyo. With killer vocals like hers the aegyo personality doesn't match with her soulful tones.
I also think she'll develop more personality in interviews as she gets older and matures as a person and an artist
