'My Lovely Sam Soon' Writer Creates Controversial New Love Story

Kim Do Woo was one of the first k-drama writers to master the noona romance, creating the memorable 2005 romantic comedy "My Lovely Sam Soon." Now noona romances are an often-encountered and much-loved guilty pleasure.
The drama's lovable character Sam Soon, played by Kim Sun Ah, was older, unmarried, and not considered conventionally desirable and yet she got her wish. After much trouble, she realized both her career and romantic dreams.
Kim Do Woo is fond of creating unusual love stories and she's created a new one titled "Righteous Love."
At the Nov. 19 press conference for the drama, Kim Do Woo said, "I wanted to talk about an unconventional romance."
The romance is unconventional and somewhat controversial. The drama's heroine Illi is married but then she meets and falls in love with another man.
"I didn't consider my drama to be about unrighteous affairs but just wanted to offer something different to the viewers," said Kim. "And then I thought if I gave a rom-com spin to the subject matter, it would be unlike any previous dramas."
The drama's character Illi, played by Lee Si Young, married for love the first time. She married her high school teacher, played by Uhm Tae Woong. He's quiet, reserved, and provides a stable life for her. Things are going fine until she meets a carpenter played by Lee Soo Hyuk. Her unexpected feelings for the carpenter disrupt her peaceful married life.
In an interview with the Joongang Daily, actress Lee Si Young described the drama as a "strong and passionate story about love." That's why she wanted so much to be in it.
But she admits it was a tricky party to play. It would be easy for viewers to think badly of the heroine. She has a husband who loves her and viewers might think her ungrateful, immoral.
"Illi is a difficult character to play," she said. "I didn't approach her in an immoral way but tried to focus only on her emotions. Even if it doesn't involve marriage, I wanted people who had gone through a similar situation, being confused between two people, to sympathize with my character."
According to actor Uhm Tae Woong, every character in the drama is easy to relate to.
"In the drama, there is not a single character that you cannot understand or sympathize with. It is a warm, and at the same time, heartbreaking story of love," said Uhm.
Han Ji Seung, who directed "Alone in Love," is the director.
Will viewers love Lee Si Young's Illi the same way they loved Kim Sun Ah's Sam Soon? What do you think? The drama will premiere on Dec. 1.
Lee Soo Hyuk Tries Romance

Model-turned actor Lee Soo Hyuk has perfected the cool but distant character. In "Shark he played a serious criminal investigator. In "Vampire Idol," he played a serious but bloodthirsty monster.
"All the characters I've acted seem similar, right," he said when asked about his previous roles at the press conference for his new drama "Valid Love."
He tried to figure out if they had something in common.
"I've acted many characters that don't seem quite human," he said.
He had a chance to warm up when playing Yoo Jin Woo in "High School King of Manners," even if it did take him almost all the drama to do so. Playing the CEO's son, his character started out seeming hostile and then slowly admitted his vulnerability.
"I was able to show my human side through 'High School King of Manners,' and I feel honored to take on a character that is involved in a romance this time," he said.
He admits that his looks sometimes work against him when it comes to casting.
"As a model I have an edgy urban image but the director saw another side of me," he said. "His advice has been very helpful and I've been working hard.
The tvN drama stars Lee Si Young as Kim Illy, a woman who is in love with for two men at the same time. She loves her husband Jang Tae Hee, played by Uhm Tae Woong. And she still has feelings for her first love Kim Joon, played by Lee Soo Hyuk.
At the drama's press conference Lee Si Young was asked which co-star she would prefer in real life. She said he was drawn to Lee Soo Hyuk's looks, but ultimately they work against him.
"It's a tough question," she said. "He's so handsome that it's a problem. I feel more comfortable with Uhm Tae Woong."
Lee Si Young said that she felt comfortable with Uhm Tae Woong from the start and as a result the emotional scenes with him were easy to film. She admitted that she has not yet gotten close to Lee Soo Hyuk because their characters fight a lot and there was no need to get close just yet.
That might change as they film more romance scenes.
Kim So Woo, who wrote "My Lovely Sam Soon," has written the screenplay for "Valid Love." Han Ji Seung, who directed "Alone in Love" will direct the comedy.
"Valid Love" airs on Dec. 1.

Date: 2014-11-30 11:29 pm (UTC)I like Kim Sun Ah as a person but I find the the writer take on her character in Sam Soon makes me hard to like her. Plus, the plot wasn't that believable. I wasn't convinced why Hyunbin like her and etc..
I probably wouldn't be watching this since affair type of story really irks me esp when the writer/director tried to glorify that relationship. I know feelings is a tricky thing but having an affair is really not how you should be handled that feelings.
