M.I.B’s Kangnam confessed that he was bullied because he is bi-ethnic.

During the November 23 broadcast of JTBC’s Salon de Raison, Kangnam revealed that he was bullied during childhood because he is bi-ethnic.

Kangnam said, “When I went to kindergarten in Japan, I was extremely bullied. I was beat up so much,” adding, “Not only was I short and small, I was partly Korean, so I was beat up to the point my bones broke.”

Kangnam, who is a Japanese citizen born of a Korean mother and Japanese father and spent his childhood in Japan, confessed, “When I was in kindergarten, the level of bullying was the worst because the kids don’t know what they’re doing. My hair was pulled and they swore at me. My mom would cry too.”

Jo Se Ho also said, “I went to school in Japan before I transferred to Korea but the moment I said that I’m from Japan, I was bullied. I told my parents that I don’t want to go to school out of my immaturity. I would throw away the things I bought from Japan without letting my mom know.”

Salon de Raison featured Hong Jin Ho and Jo Se Ho as guests, dealing with stories behind Hong Jin Ho’s dating rumor with Lady Jane, Jo Se Ho keeping Kangnam in check and more.

It's always sad to hear and read about bullying especially to this extend :| I don't know if it's commonly happening but my friend whose half Japanese and half Scandinavian experienced the same bullying when she was in Japan as a kid, she looked a bit different from the rest and thus it was really hard for her during that time.

how sad >.< I had a friend like that. She's half Japanese and half Taiwanese but spent most of her childhood in Japan and she was bullied a lot thats why she transferred to my school as an exchange student in high school. I can't understand why people are so cruel like that

They learn it from their bigoted parents.

Education system too. Japan doesn't include its war atrocities in the curriculum, but focus a lot on nationalistic values. The dokdo island conflict runs deeper beyond just that island and waters. The kids might have been taught to be antagonistic against Taiwanese, I think. :/

i feel like in countries like japan when the population is so homogenous, the bullying of kids that aren't the ethnic majority is sadly common. more japanese people need to become more accepting of foreign people, but sadly i cant see that happening any time soon.

the saddest part is that when he moved to korea he might have thought the bullying would end but he just couldn't win anywhere :(

Sad that he was bullied (and in both countries - no relief). I'm actually reading a book right now where one of the main characters is a Japanese girl who, b/c of her father's job, grew up in the U.S., and when the family has to move back to Japan, she gets bullied for being different and not knowing the language well enough. The book's A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki - the other main character is a Japanese-American woman who found the girl's diary on the beach and is reading it. I'm also reminded of the book, Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, which is a really good read about a fictional man who grows up in the US and Mexico and never feels accepted/at home.

There was an exchange student in my university and he had the same story. =( He's half Japanese half Korean and he's been bullied since kindergarten (he came back to Japan after 2 semesters here). One of the worst stories was about how kids were throwing rocks at him during lunch break and nobody stopped them. It was heartbreaking how he kept saying that he wants to love the country he lives in, but he can't. =(((
