Despite the fame and their seemingly flawless lifestyle, idols are confessing concerns about their unpredictable futures.

According to the Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee of the South Korean government, various idols and trainees from eight different entertainment companies participated in a psychology survey, and it turns out that 4 in 10 idols are concerned about the future.

40.6% claimed that they are suffering from stress, while 22.8% were in need for mental stability and support. Depression was also a serious issue amongst idols, affecting 13.4% of the participants. 6.7% have stated concerns regarding their family and friends as well.

Interestingly, analysis and statistics of the companies’ data have shown that JYP Entertainment occupied 41.5% of the total concerns of the future, an interesting statistic despite the fact that JYP is one of the largest K-Pop companies.

The surveyor has stated that “due to the cooperation of the music companies, it can be seen as a positive that these companies who control the culture of Korean youths participated in the survey, but some big companies, like YG and SM not participating in the survey is a problem.

Idols are growing popular not only in Korea or even Asia, but also throughout the world. But despite their fame, these idols are also humans, just like us. Let’s hope the best for all the idols and trainees in the K-pop industry.

Well we get a daily play by play of SM, so there's not THAT much fans don't already know. YG is pretty much the same. Except, we get survival shows for the play by play. We can see what YG puts those babies through. And just like with SM, we can see how exhausted they are, how they "rest" when they're not really working, how much weight all their artists have lost due to "diets" dressed up as sickness and stress.

I saw this earlier. I think it's important to add the graph that shows just which companies took part in this survey, kind of explains why JYP ranked so high considering they have the most active idols and the most trainees... like even when you combine the other companies' idols together JYP has more lol.

this. It's actually a lot more telling that SM and YG didn't take the survey than JYP's numbers

The future doesn't look great for most of our current faves.I already have grim predictions for which idols are going to end up in need of intensive medical care/mental help later in life.Hell, look at Shinhwa, they're always in and out of the hospital, the idol lifestyle fucks you up permanently, especially for younger idols who live those schedules through puberty
More companies need to follow JYP and Cube's lead in having a psychiatrist on staff tbh

I wonder, was there any study following up the earlier generation idols? Or articles about the effects of idol life on health? I mean, I'm pretty sure there's something to be said here about the entire idol industry if everyone is working at unsustainable levels only to burn out before they hit the age of 35.

if only SM's and YG's artists participated in that survey.

or you could use this chance to fucking start demanding change. but no, let's FIGHTING and hope for people to survive an industry where overwork is rife, where half of the fucking people if not more probably have to abuse substances to keep their energy levels up, where most people are probably on diets that would be unhealthy even for the most sedentary people. You could stop fucking applauding drastic weight loss and saying that idols are greedy for leaving groups even when they look like they're on the brink of complete mental and physical health breakdowns.

But fucking no, you just want to HOPE.

It's more about kpop journalism in general - translations or not. I feel like most articles I read about idols undergoing health/mental problems, etc are finished with a tone that suggests "OH CONGRATULATE THEM FOR BEING SO DILIGENT". It pisses me off tbh. Though, I will admit I have to get kpop news through translations, but I hate this whole idea of "let us pray and not do shit to change it" in general.

I just maaaad.

I can see why JYP idols are so concerned about the future as many of them aren't that musically talented that if they also fail at acting they will need to develop something completely else to make money after they are too old to be idols. Plus especially jyp's male idols probably have lotsof injuries from all those failed flips etc. they have done as part of choreo.

I think that if YG artists would have participated Dara would have probably been most concerned about the future as YG hasn't really set up an acting career for her and she isn't much of a singer and is awful in variety too, so after 2NE1 her future is in air.

tbh i think bom and minzy will also struggle to have a career after 2ne1. at least minzy's still young but i can't see them having very successful solo careers

From: [identity profile] adenar.livejournal.com
From what she's been up to lately/been posting I can see Minzy leaving idoldom and joining her sister in gospel singing or something. Minzy's performed with her sister before & Minyoung (?) has just released an album. I don't think she'll keep being an idol but I think she'll find something.

Minzy can probably teach religion or something if her career as non idol singer fails as she has apparently been an excellent student in her uni. And if Korea just can get over Bom's scandal she can live on by releasing digital singles as South Korea loves recorded version of her voice.

eh, that can be said about most idols of any company and jype's percentage is high because of them having the biggest amount of idols being surveyed.

plus i believe that those types of concerns are very common in any career especially when you are young.

i'm not surprised that yg and sm didn't let their idols participate.

i am older than most idols and i am constantly worried about my future, i can't even imagine how much harder it is for the idols who lead a lifestyle a thousand times harder than me.

agreed. i can't even imagine. it just gets me so mad. like, most of the idols we follow were signed into training when they were young adolescents and still had to go to school and it's such an all-consuming career.

ughhhh. i hate this industry why am i still following it, bb.
