from 1980 to 1983 when jeon doo hwan was the president there was this idea of 녹화사업, or greenery movement in rough translation - to get rid of "red" or communist ideas from the college students' mind and make it green or something.
they would take random college students and force them into enlisting, give them some "education" and plant them back among the fellow college students as a mole to report any students participating in the demonstration movement. in the process of converting them to a mole or after these "moles" have brought in more students there were torture and beating involved, and many died from the torture or committed suicide.
there's also the burim incident, which was similar to this incident - there's a movie called "The Attorney" that came out last year with Song Kang Ho and Im Si Wan, which is based on this incident.
It's a dark history, and it depresses me sometimes that Korea is regressing back to it. :/
Your last sentence is depressing indeed but I'm impressed that both artists decided to cover such an important yet dramatic part of history. It's not something easy! I hope many people will check what this is about and learn more. Is this "greenary movement" common knowledge in Korea? Dark parts of history are often hidden in societies :/ Is the Attorney a good film?
i don't know - i haven't had the korean education beyond elementary school years so i don't know if this is taught in school; and those older than me lived through it so... but i assume it's really not, because i know korean history hasn't been a mandatory subject in high school for several years now (only ones who take it are those who aim for seoul national university which requires the subject test) and the current government is actively revising the textbook to rid of it. they're taking the japan route in terms of erasing history and it really disturbs me that we can't do jack shit.
it's a VERY good film, it's also the most watched film of last year. si wan did very well and song kang ho and kim young ae are always amazing.
Thanks, I'm definitively putting it on the list of k-movies I have to watch :)
History as an option seems totally incredible for me, but in the end, I'm not really surprised. It's going to backfire on Korea... We're not perfect in France, colonialism often get shafted for political reasons and it's a big problem in our society. I guess hiding the reality of dictatorships will damage Korea in the long run, you can't pretend it was just a time for economic and social developments :/ Anyway, thanks for answering!
hiding the reality of dictatorship is useful for those currently in power whose political interests lie with the dictators... cough park geun hye cough it's really upsetting though, i feel like korea as a modern democratic country got off to a wrong start with the first president who would rather "forgive" the pro-Japanese (who essentially sold korea to japan few years prior), then we had those who had sucked up to japan and kept their rich and power rise to top in political chain - and we still have them to this day. they have a very big population of those brainwashed into thinking that the oppression and torture were for their benefit, to improve the economy and better the country, and this older generation passes their idea down and with a lack of history course in school (or very controlled curriculum), the descendants are to take that as truth. it's how we had ~20-30% supporting park geun hye in the election (that was completely rigged anyway). there's really no justice in korea and it upsets me that i feel like it's taking the worst from japan and china as its predecessors - we're really not in a good shape.
yup, it might be a bit confusing if you don't have the background history but i suggest you should look it up after watching it. the movie itself is straightforward.
Hm... I'm not sure about the boy but the girl is definitely young Cheon Song Yi :) (and it says something about the degree of my K-Drama addiction when I knew that just hearing her voice, right? I srsly need to stop watching that many dramas^^)
actually she started out directing movies but didnt have much investments ~~ I read somewhere that she just finished directing a movie for JYP. dont know much about it though other than that many of the casts are from JYP.
anyway, i want loen to invest $$ so she can direct a movie. it would be nice if iu were in it. (iu biased here )
i love i IU but i cant get into this song because the style of the song is so incredibly similar to Porter Robinson, specifically his song 'Sad Machine'
the song gives a surrealistic feeling. it's a bit off for me at some parts--i wonder if it's because iu's singing is paired with an electronic song. the chorus is something else, makes me reminisce about the past.
Love it. I didn't know this was coming out but it is everything. I love the sound (very Neon bunny as someone put it) and it fits with IU very well. The song is fantastic the MV is engaging, I want to know what happens next! Hwang Soo Ah deserves an award all of the MV's they direct are on point.
MY ETHEREAL ELECTRO QUEEN!!! ♥ I really like thes song tbh and IU is so gracious, it's not fair. The MV's story was really engaging as well, I didn't even expect that. Kudos to them!
I like the sound. It's like electro meets dream pop. I can see why Seo Taiji chose IU, if anyone can deliver this type of music to the masses, it's her.

Song is nice, a bit bland imo. But I like the dreaminess of it.
