Kim Gu Ra Reveals His Thoughts on Sharing of Profits Within Idol Groups + Suzy clarifies

On the latest episode of JTBC’s “War of Words,” the theme of “Breadwinners of Idol Groups” was discussed. The most known breadwinners that were discussed were 4Minute’s Hyuna, FT Island’s Lee Hongki, and Miss A’s Suzy, among others.

The MCs debated the issue of how these groups split their earnings. Rose Motel’s Yook Joong Wan, for example, splits all of his earnings equally among the members (in other words, 1/N splitting). To this, Lee Yoon Seok commented, “But when the 1/N system gets prolonged over an extended period of time, there are times within idol groups where their parents intervene and complain.” Heo Ji Woong added, “I think it would be a better idea to keep in 1/N to certain limit, and once that limit is reached go their separate ways.”

Hearing this debate, Kim Gu Ra showed his disapproval of the 1/N system by commenting, “If the 1/N system is continued, the Miss A members minus Suzy will be the happiest people on Earth.”


Suzy clarifies income distribution between miss A after questions

miss A’s Suzy took to Twitter to clarify an issue of earning distribution amongst the group, after it became a hot topic on a TV program.

Suzy posted a message to Twitter, clarifying the income distribution within miss A and solo activities. She revealed, “We do divide [our income], but the ratio from advertisements or dramas and other individual activities are a bit different. The broadcast, it said the ratio was 1/N (equal split). It’s true it was like that in the past, but it’s not anymore. I thought it would be best for me to explain this issue… because there are different stories going around about the matter.”

Following JTBC’s “SsulJun” program the topic of members that perform the best within idol groups came up. Suzy was a clear headliner in this topic, and was brought up as an example.

It really must suck for the "unpopular" group members when it comes to income because, even if you wanted to do solo activities, if your company and management (and individual talent really) don't put you out there, what can you do? They'll just seem desperate asking to go on shows or other things. With group activities like albums and such, I think income should be distributed evenly, but for solo activities like CFs and acting, that should be the sole earnings of the member doing them and while it's their discretion whether to change the split or share, in the end, they must think of themselves too esp since they seemingly have to pay off debts to their company.

Idol business isn't a livelihood, really, and it's a shame that there's still young people going into trainee life thinking that can be their career when, it reality, it's probably less profitable then if they just worked a wage job their life.

I don't know -- maybe because the US is larger population wise, but I don't really see young people that enraptured by celeb life, not in the way Korean teenagers (and younger) seemed attracted to being idols. And there's also the fact that Disney stars, being the closest thing to K-idols, seemingly are able to 'make it' without that mess that is trainee life. Not saying they have it easy or without trouble, but it seems like the trainee to idol cycle is doing extra where it's probably not needed.

Kinda, but like, not? I mean, there's tons of idols not in the biz because they want to do music and the ones that do, some of them could've managed without going the idol route. Would they have hundreds of teenagers screaming their names? Maybe not, but they'd get to do music

i understand the equal split, especially in the beginning.
for some, if it wasn't for the group, some of the artists wouldn't get as noticed for individual work. (note i say SOME, not for all.)

but at some point the rate of distribution should dwindle and end.

it does need to be on the company to push the other members of a group just as much. or to push more group activities/CF/modeling/etc so that the others are getting a decent income as well. most of the companies put a lot of energy into one or two "faces" of the group, and the others are just scrounging along.

yeah it's really not fair to the ones who don't make as much money either - if the company straight-up rejects offers for them or doesn't put them out there, they can't make any money, and the companies usually just invest all their energy in the "visual" or popular members.

Their promotions last year were so disappointing, because if a song/concept like Hush - which I thought was easily their most public-friendly single since GGBG while still being distinctive (unlike Good Bye Baby) - couldn't be rolled out properly or catch on with the public enough to give Miss A another smash, then their prospects for flourishing as a group are pretty dim tbh.

That's good to hear. Most of the netizenbuzz translated comments from the past year or two seem to have K-netizens generally agreeing with him or not calling him on his shit (excepting of course the comfort women scandal, but that hasn't been brought up much in articles concerning him for a while), so it gave an impression of them valuing his opinions in a way Omona users don't.

some of the most disgusting things include talking about lee hyori's boobs accusing her of boob surgery but like used the most inappropriate language to describe them, ha ri soo (the mtf trans singer who was really popular last decade) and her artificial vagina, and called sin ji (from cool) fatass pig who's lucky who gets fat in her boobs instead of her face etc

most of the public doesn't know the extent of it, since this was all back ten years ago on podcast when he was irrelevant, i think radio star still brings it up time to time to make fun of him but he hates when he's the target (which is hypocritical considering what he does) so it's usually quickly shot down and the conversation topic changed.

Ok, both Suzy and the girls are getting fucked by this bastard's unnecessary comments. He just has this huge need to bash girls from girl groups and I just wish he could disappear and be locked on a basement so he would stop spilling shit. Jia and Suzy did right to shut his trap, but what really amuses me is international fans either bashing Suzy saying that she made the girls look like leechers and others saying that the girls are always partying with Suzy's money. Fei and Jia are always attending schedules and while Fei is in two variety shows, one cooking show that will begin in Korea and a survival show in China, Jia is filming her chinese movie with Song Seung Hoon. The one with the least activities is Min, but that isn't her fault either. JYPE just won't promote miss A and this group is surviving on their own.

I'm confused how this 1/N thing works. Like is it a 50/50 split, in that say Idol A gets 50% for being the one to actually do the job, and say the other 50% is divided among members B, C, and D?
