The tvN drama “Plus Nine Boys” has been caught up in a plagiarism controversy
“Plus Nine Boys” has been accused of having similar content to a musical called “Exit 9” that ran from February 20 to the 23 of this year.
A viewer of the drama pointed out the similarities on the “Plus Nine Boys” homepage. The viewer had noticed that the characters, setting, and the material was strikingly similar to a musical a university drama club put on. When he asked his friend who was in the musical about the drama, the friend told him that he had also recently discovered this and found the similarities off-putting.
According to the viewer, the musical and the drama are about men ages 19, 29, and 39 who are going through difficulties. Also, both named their 19 year old character Mingoo and the 39 year old’s job is a producer.
The viewer hesitated calling it plagiarism, but pointed out that the similarities couldn’t be called coincidences.
The head producer of “Plus Nine Boys,” Kim Young Hoon, rebutted the accusations. He wrote on the homepage, “All of the crew members said they had never seen the musical. ‘Plus Nine Boys’ had been planned since the fall of 2013 and the final synopsis was given to the crew in January and February of 2014.”
Kim Young Hoon also explained that some of the characters, including Mingoo, were named after actual producers and staffs of the drama.
“Plus Nine Boys” Could Be Facing Broadcast Prohibition Due to Alleged Plagiarism
On October 2, writer Lee Jung Joo of the musical “Exit 9” put in a request for an injunction preventing the broadcast of “Plus Nine Boys,” allegedly a plagiarized work based on the musical. The writer said, “I met with the drama producers and the CJ law team, but we couldn’t reach an agreement, so I’m going to court.”
“I’m scared, being just one individual against a large broadcasting corporation. But, although it is just the creative work of a university student, it is, nonetheless, a ‘creative work’ into which hours and hours of creative struggle were invested. I don’t know what the end result of this will be, but I want to make it known that even a university student’s work isn’t easily brought into existence,” said Lee Jung Joo.
Previously, on September 18, questions of plagiarism were brought up regarding the similarities between “Plus Nine Boys” and the university musical, which hit the stage in February of this year. Viewers had posted online that the character setups and various aspects of the drama were extremely similar to the musical.

Date: 2014-10-02 07:48 pm (UTC)similar situation is going on with king's face, which is a kbs drama that's started filming recently, which is basically the movie face reader in a drama format they haven't bought the rights for (the deal fell through, kbs decided to write the drama anyway). seo in guk's gonna be the lead, and it pisses me off that kbs keeps blatantly plagiarizing shit and people watch it anyway

Date: 2014-10-03 05:05 am (UTC)I've never checked into it, but when I watched variety shows and I hear all the familiar OST music (from different things like Pixar and or whatever), just the fact that there's so many in an episode I always wonder if they bothered to get clearance and pay for it? Music rights aren't cheap.

Date: 2014-10-03 03:08 pm (UTC)Read an article last year (?) about companies cracking down on stuff like that (trademarked images used by street shops, using celeb images to promote without permission) - but that happens a lot in big cities everywhere it seems. But it seems like there's a lot of issues with people taking lyrics, plot lines and visual imagery and trying to pass the ideas off as their own creation. I just don't seem to hear the same fuss locally. Like I've never seen a show pulled from ABC or FOX because it was discovered that the entire plot was pulled from a book without the authors permission (not just "inspired by").
