T-ara’s Latest Single “Sugar Free” Accused of Plagiarism

Girl group T-ara‘s latest single “Sugar Free” has been accused of plagiarism.

“Sugar Free” is an electronic dance music (EDM) house track. Some house music fans, however, have found similarities between “Sugar Free” and Dvbbs‘ “Tsunami,” and also with the intro to DJ Felix da Housecat‘s track “Give Me Body.” One house fan pointed out that “House music does sound similar in multiple instances, but ‘Sugar Free’ has too many similarities.”

Some are also accusing the album art for “Sugar Free” to be plagiarizing the album artwork of Justice, a famous electronic music duo.

On these issues, T-ara’s agency Core Contents Media commented that they have “not heard of these issues.”

“Sugar Free” is composed by Shinsadong Tiger and Bumee & Nangee.

Well, I personally also thought of the 'Cross' album cover when I saw T-ara's. They probably did take inspiration, but it's weird how they took out the top part of the cross? Or, they did on purpose to evide religious affiliation...

People outraged over this like GD&Top didn't also try this with their playboy ripoff before. Honestly the amount of flak they're getting for this is just going with the trend of hating on them . The netizen comments comparing this to LC's tragedy was just insensitive as fuck

GD and TOP changed their logo though because they also ripped off a very well known and popular logo. They're getting hate for plagiarizing, just like all people do, it's worse for T-ara when their label has done SUCH a great job making people hate them.

The LC stuff is bullshit though, absolutely disgusting.

Anyone know much about Bigroom EDM? The comments @ Soompi are pretty convinced that "Tsunami" is just referencing this style along with many many other songs (which you can kind of see in the fact that the "plagiarism" is allegedly of two different songs in the first place).

The earlier version of the Sugar Free cover is even lazier:

They didn't even get rid of the top part of the cross so it looks almost like an exact copy with inverted colors lol. This isn't just a nod or homage or sth but blatantly obvious and yes lazy plagiarism. They should fire their whole design department a.k.a. their 12-year old unpaid graphics intern.

i feel like it was half laziness and half pathetic attempt to stir some noise which is not happening because they're irrelevant now... :(

this is one scandal that shouldn't reflect on t-ara, since they most likely had nothing to do with the album cover or the song in any way

but kpop has a plagiarism/'homage' problem, we all know that. not everyone can be orange caramel and properly license things

Eh, it's hardly plagiarism if a song features similar elements as several other dozens of tracks of a genre that isn't exactly known for a very diverse sound. Shinsadong Tiger is a pop music producer not the great saviour of big room/edm/house music so I don't know what these people were expecting. He just translated what's typical for that genre into something accessible to the general public and that's what pop music does all the time.

That album cover though... rme. It just adds to the looong list of facts and decisions that prove CCM is one of the most incompetent companies ever. They seem to have no clue how to manage a group and take care of 'the whole package' ie the music, the visual aspects and the girls themselves. They should know they have to carefully plan every single step of the way now to rebuild T-ARA's career but then things like this happen.
