Actor Kim Nam Gil will join Suzy Bae and Ryu Seung Ryung in the film "Dori Artist" or "Dorihwaga." The actor will play the role of Heungseon Daewongun, who was also called Prince Gung. The Joseon-era prince, who ruled during the 19th century, was known for his reforms and his expulsion of foreigners from Korean soil.

The film tells the story of Sin Jae Hyo, a master singer or myungchang of pansori. He established a pansori school known as the Donggrijungsa and he was one of the first singing teachers to have female students. Pansori is a Korean genre of musical storytelling that is accompanied by a singer and a drummer.

His favorite student was a poor young woman known as Jin Chae Seon. He encouraged her career and was responsible for her performing at court. Before Jin Chae Seon, no female pansori singers had ever performed at court. Ryu Seung Ryung, who was last seen in the film "The Target," plays Sin Jae Hyo. Miss A's Suzy Bae, last seen in the drama "Gu Family Book," plays Jin Chae Seon.

History says that Heungseon Daewonggun, the father of King Gojong, held a banquet to celebrate the building of a pavilion at the Geyongbok Palace. He wanted a singer to perform at the event and Sin Jae Hyo presented Jin Chae Seon. Jin Chae Seon became a star after her performance and inspired other female singers of pansori to follow her example. But after seeing her in court the prince also fell in love with her.

Sin Jae Hyo was also in love with Jin Chae Seon and wrote about a song comparing her beauty to peach blossoms and plum flowers. Although the prince falls for Jin Chae Seon she is loyal to her teacher, setting up a dangerous love triangle.

Prince Gung won't be Kim Nam Gil's first historical role. He visited the Joseon era for his last film "Pirates." But his character in that film, the bandit Jang Sa Jung, had less of a pedigree. Before that Kim Nam Gil appeared as a man driven to revenge in the melodrama "Shark."

But it was Kim Nam Gil's supporting role in a historical drama that first made him a star. He played a minor character named Bidam in the drama "Queen Seonduk." The character was so popular with audiences that history was rewritten and his role was extended.

Lee Jong Pil will direct "Dori Artist." He previously worked with Kim Nam Gil on the documentary "Ensemble."

i admit, at first i was cautiously optimistic about the movie, but didn't really have any hopes, and now i really can't wait for it and i feel like it will be one great movie and that has high chances of doing really well, especially because of the careful casting. suzy is surrounded by incredibly talented actors in this production.

I just finished marathoning Kim Nam Gil in Queen Seonduk for freaking two weeks and I'm just addicted to him lol. Movie should be interesting but I'd better watch his other works first. I tried watching Shark, but it's a struggle.

Why is it such a struggle? Is it that bad or you just dislike angst or melodrama in general?

I'm stuck on the teen actors part. I'm so anxious to get to Nam gil's scenes lol. I like melodramas but the story is moving a bit slow for me. I just need to watch more episodes.

That's always happen to me while watching most of historical dramas. But I just get through all of that since the later episodes are usually beyond awesome. :DD

Dont watch Bad Guy BTW since you will be pissed haha

The drama is not bad per se but the ending is so terrible that I just label the drama a fail as a whole. You dont do that kind of ending esp to the viewers who spent time on the drama. Legit the worst ending I have ever seen together with Warrior Baek Dong Soo. :/

I read that Kim Nam Gil was already called out to the army by the time the drama is ending so they basically shoot the drama without him at that time.

I recommend Bad Guy. I got into Kim Nam Gil after watching it. Shark was huge dissapointment for me.

I read some reviews saying that Bad Guy was a drama to stay away from so I had ended up watching Shark lol. And I also heard Shark was also a disappointment after looking at an episode review on Dramabeans. I think I'm going to watch both in due time simply because Nam Gil is in it and I'll just assume, him as Bidam was his best role ever lol. I loved his character so much as Bidam lol.

Great, another cast of experienced and competent veterans, and in the mix they throw an idol actor who can barely manage saying her lines in modern dramas without sounding like she's on a teleprompter, forget about the far more technically demanding sageuk speech. (not sure the pansori training is going to magically make her convincing as a player, either)

I get that she's very sweet and does a lot of CFs (aka popular), but is this production really that desperate for money, because Kim Nam-gil and Ryu Seung-ryong are pretty experienced and bankable in their own right. Story sounds interesting though, and maybe the writers of this movie will just work around her acting shortcomings the way writers of her other projects do.

(sorry Suzy fans, I just don't think acting is her talent or even something she particularly wants to do, but JYP seems hellbent on making an actress of her at any cost, they'd be smarter to just package her as a solo idol instead or keep her doing CFs - less work, more money)

i think getting her to do more acting in movies is smart. she can elevate her status from an idol to a respected actress and have the opportunity to work other talented actors/directors. i haven't seen her in anything since architecture 101 (which i thought was a bore) but suzy is still young and i think it's smart for jyp to use her popularity to widen her career trajectories while she's still the it girl

I was already sold and now I just CAN'T BREATH. I've known many of KNG works even before getting into kpop and I was always drawn to how amazing, perfect bubble of sexyness this man is. And sorry to those who don't agree with Suzy casting, but it's inevitably how charming and charismatic her acting is to dozens of people in Korea, so, agreeing or not, its a matter of fact that people from the industry likes what they see and wants to work with her. See, I will never get Yoona's or Krystal's appeals, but aparentely many people do, so why the hell would I criticize what the general public wants to see and to buy. And this idol×actor thing is plain bullshit, specially when we know how freaking devastating is the schedule of those idols and how they dont have any free time to focus solely on the acting field like the actors and actresses and we still have a bunch of bad acting coming from them .
