Meghan Trainor

Koyote- Happy Mode

If you listen to songs individually there's no similarity at all?? Apparently the korean composer is contacting lawyers but good luck because the beat is basic as it comes.

Wow, I'm out of touch with western pop

Damn. I love All About That Bass. Haven't listened to the Koyote song individually but judging from the mashup alone it sounds extremely similar. Well if it's a basic melody people are bound to come up with similar notes.

People are far too liberal with the word "plagiarism". It simply shares a basic chord progression (or melody... I don't know the difference).

lol if you don't know the difference maybe you shouldn't try to explain. but I do agree that people can go overboard with claims of plagiarism. in this case I know another tune with the same melody...

yeah once you actually listen to them separately it's obvious that it's just one part that is fairly similar and it's not really unique-sounding enough to claim plagiarism

not really related to the subject at hand but
i'm waiting for the day when a company finally releases a body positive song that celebrates all types, instead of just one and slamming all the others.
like AATB could've had so much potential but they had to go and ruin it with those awful lyrics.

Date: 2014-08-27 03:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gardevoiir.livejournal.com
my two good friends didn't even think about that before I pointed it out to them upon hearing it for the first time
I was like "... okay yeah it's highlighting that those with a bigger body type are fine too but then it goes and shames those that are naturally skinny or just thinner people in general"
because I mean there are people that are very self-conscious about the fact that they're thin and they don't like it at all, so it goes two ways
the song really did have so much potential and I'm so disappointed in how it missed the mark completely :(

TRL was the best part of my summer vacations in middle school. :(

Why don't we have anything similar to K-Pop music shows here in the US? My 17-year old teenage sister doesn't really listen to K-Pop but she loves watching Inkigayo, and I suspect most of the people in her One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer fandoms would feel the same way (if the performers were different). I get that social media is great (and free) for promotion, but who wouldn't rather see their favorite artists perform on a somewhat interactive weekly show?

We used to have Top of the Pops in the UK, which was the closest thing. When singles stopped being so closely watched, they stopped the show. We still get it at Christmas and New Year. Otherwise we just have Later with Jools Holland.
I have no idea why you Americans never had anything like this. I guess you watched at TOTP slowly flopped and decided to save yourselves from the hassle.

I think the only thing at all close we've had in the US was Soul Train, which ended in 2005. Or maybe American Bandstand, but that died in 1989.

If you're talking about pop from the 90's and 00's, other than the performances, that stuff was the most inauthentic, commercially produced crap that's ever come out of a record company. The only good thing is it had alternative music to balance it out.

The stuff being released today isn't much better, but it's unique and artists are taking more control of their own music.

The problem is that the real artists, the ones I listen to anyways, are stuck in the Youtube box and the artists that are being promoted are following trends to stay relevant (how many songs talk about wanting to party all night long or have a twerk break? I lost count).

I agree with you sooooooo much.

I didn't even watch the VMAs and just the fact that Lorde won best rock video for Royals makes me realize I made a good decision there.

But, I hope it's not too late. Someone can change the game, sooner than later I hope!

I can hear the similarity, but I suspect he doesn't have enough to make a case.

Something about that Meghan Trainor video disturbs me. It's like a Rick Astley mismatch moment, only instead of the voice I just ... kinda wasn't expecting a chipper white girl? And something about the way the backup dancers are presented is kind of bugging me too, like I'm seeing Nicki Minaj references, and can't decide if it's homage or appropriative?

Or am I just imagining things/old and out of touch with what's normal for 20something USians?

I heard All About that Bass a few weeks after it came out and it was incredibly catchy to me and in terms of it being body-shaming, it was far less so compared to most things. [And as a body-positive person, I didn't really equate "no stick figure silicone Barbie doll" with being skinny-shaming because...a Barbie Doll has long since been proven not to have features or measurements/proportions that are anywhere near realistic; but I understand and respect those who take it another way.]

I really don't think that these songs sound all that alike. There's a five second window that they seem to, but...so do other songs?

When I had first heard BAP's First Sensibility medley and Bangx2 was played, I legit had thought that it sounded like one of Rammstein's songs(I can't recall the name off hand), but wasn't surprised when the entire song BUT for those few seconds were different. I didn't think BAP or TS were 'plagiarizing' in anyway.

At this point, I feel like there is only so many beats that can be composed and produced that sound pleasant to the majority of people and to complain about a few seconds of a song that are similar would be a waste of time.

the thing that irks me abt the song is how it mentions boys approve a certain kind of body, so it's good.

Yeah, my mama she told me don't worry about your size
She says, "Boys like a little more booty to hold at night."

imo it's not body positivity when approval has to come from an outside source rather than u loving yourself cuz you're you.

From: [identity profile] la-luciernaga.livejournal.com
I must have completely missed that line when I was thinking about the song. You're completely right and I apologize for stating otherwise. It still doesn't meet the level of body-positive, but I wouldn't exactly call it body-shaming. I think if that second line of the lyric you quoted had been left out(were there others?) then it would have been a much better love-yourself kind of song.

That part os just about her mom trying to comfort her tbf there's a another part where she says something about skinny girls but then says jk y'all are beautiful just the way you are.

From: [identity profile] pwhyt.livejournal.com
i never mentioned anything abt "skinny shaming" anyway? that's not the problem i have with this song. it's the fact that boys need to approve first for girls to feel good about their bodies

she sings this too:
'Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase
And all the right junk in all the right places

it's fucked up.

Lbr the lyrics are shit, replace some words and its the same thing kelis sang about. Her milk shake brings all the boys to the yard. Kids bop anaconda

the plagarism thing idk if it'll stand. it doesn't seem that unique of a melody ?? like more than one person in the world could've thought of it
