Red Velvet (Wendy, Seulgi, Irene, and Joy) is the first new girl group debuted by SM Entertainment since Girls’ Generation and f(x). Their labelmates, TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, SHINee, etc. already gained global popularity, as it took 5 years to form this group of ladies, and their endless support and advice is continuing on.
Under the cascading spotlights, Red Velvet performed their debut stage on the first on KBS’s “Music Bank”. Today Red Velvet sat down for an interview in the “Music Bank” waiting room.
Today Red Velvet expressed their thankfulness to their SM sunbaes. Member Seulgi said, “We fostered our dream as singers when we saw our sunbaes, Girls’ Generation and TVXQ. They had heard the news of our debut today and congratulated us and advised us to work hard. We’re really thankful.”
Irene and Joy added, “f(x), SHINee, and Super Junior sunbaes also congratulated us and we gained strength because of the advice they gave us on how to act on stage.”
Then they said, “We hope to become a globally-known group like our sunbaes. Our dream is to work hard and one day become someone else’s role model.”
f(x)’s Amber and SHINee’s Jonghyun filled their SNS accounts with support for Red Velvet. Amber posted, “Teddy Bear, congrats on your debut. Please cheer on Red Velvet. Happiness!” And also include a photo she took with Seulgi. Jonghyun also deliver his support by posting “Red Velvet is really cute, Happiness!”
Red Velvet had their debut stage today on KBS’s “Music Bank”. Following that, they will appear on MBC’s “Show! Music Core” on the second and SBS’s “Inkigayo” on the third and set the stage with their debut single “행복 (Happiness)” while kicking off full-scale promotional activities.

Idol Kingdom’ SM Entertainment’s new girl group have finally been relevealed and faced the public. The group’s name is Red Velvet. The inviting colour of red and the feminine material velvet was compounded together to make the name Red Velvet, and we met the 4 girls on the 1st of the month, somewhere in Yeouido. After their first debut pre-recorded broadcast ended we saw refreshing members Seulgi, Irene (real name Bae Juhyun), Wendy (real name Son Seungwan), Joy (real name Park Sooyoung) and asked them questions we were curious about.
Q. You finally debuted! You must be relieved.
Joy: It wasn’t as nerve wracking as I thought it would be. Many fans came to the recording sto watch and cheer for us so it gave me a lot of strength.
Q. It’s only just your debut stage and you already have fans. Is it because you’re from idol kingdom SM entertainment? Your sunbaes are also fans of you.
Seulgi: That makes it more nerve-wracking. We’ll work hard to be great artists like our sunbaes.
Q. To be honest, I looked at your image teasers and I thought that you all looked identical. But really being up close to all four of you, I can tell that you have individual charms. Seeing as Joy wasn’t public as an SM rookie member pre-debut, unlike all the other three of you, the fans seemed to react to the remaining member.
Seulgi: Because Joy was revealed like that, she’s the member recieving the most interest, right?
Joy: Actually I don’t think I recieved that much interest and attention. Because the other three of my unnies were revealed differently from me, they had fans even as rookies. But I’m really surprised and happy to be recieving so much interest.
Q. Infact if you look at the girl group’s debut song and title track ‘Happiness’’s concept, you notice that the concept is quite difficult. It can even have the affect of Safari or Amusement Park advertisement video. What’s the actual concept?
Seulgi: It’s gorgeous isn’t it? A lot of animation is used and vivid colours so I hope that people view it as a fun video. There’s a wide variety of attraction and things to see.
Joy: I think it can give the impression of freshness as it’s our debut music video. For our next concept we want to give something fun for our fans. Instead of a clean and bubbly concept, we also added feminine and seductive qualities into our stage to show you.
Q. You’re already thinking of the next performance? What concept do you think you’ll be best at?
Irene: I think we can do all genres. Even up to a sexy concept. (laughs) At the company we’re told we have a fascinating charm. That we’re captivating women. There is a reason we used the words ‘Red Velvet’ for our team name.
Q. It looks like your sunbaes from the same company as you gave you a lot of advice.
Seulgi: We met up with DBSK and Super Junior sunbaes a lot whilst preparing our debut. Amongst all of our subaes, DBSK have not forgotten their originial intentions and greeted us well whilst giving us advice.
Q. Speaking of which, Seulgi recieved full-on support from Super Junior member’ Kyunhyun. On MBC’s ‘Radio Star’ thanks to Kyuhyun’s reference of Seulgi, her name is imprinted in the minds of the public.
Seulgi: We didn’t even ask our sunbaes to do that but they just did it. (Laughs) It’s funny to think of because the recording was before it was decided that we were even going to debut. It really surprised me.
Q. Red Velvet, what would you say are your individual charms?
Irene: What could it be? (Laughs) My hidden fun side?
Seulgi: Irene unnie seems very serious. But she’s the opposite of that. She’s the most playful member, so sometimes she seems more like a donsaeng to me. I have an oriental charm? (laughs)Oh, this is embarrassing. I don’t have double eyelids. I think the charm that I have that the other members don’t is not having double eyelids whether I like it or not.
Wendy: I really laugh a lot. Brightness, a happy kid.. if I had to arrange it into one word? Happiness!
Joy: Because I’m the maknae I wouldn’t really say I’m cute but…
Seulgi: Joy is really adorable. She has a lot of aegyo so she seems like a baby sometimes.

Irene:
Casting. I joined SM Entertainment after I passed an SM Audition. People asked if it wasn’t hard to live the life of a trainee, so I feel pressured to overcome any disadvantages as this is the path I chose.
Hurricane Venus. I’m an huge fan of BoA sunbae. I still can’t forget the first concert (of hers) that I saw. The lights struck the dark stage so BoA sunbae sat down in a chair wearing a glittering stage costume and she began to sing. I wonder how I can be as charismatic and cool.
The Notebook. This is my favorite movie. The calm and beautiful storyline is touching, but Rachel McAdam’s character is the prettiest. I watch this movie over and over because even to women she’s lovable and has a beautiful smile.
My Strengths and Weaknesses. It’s good that I’m open by nature but I don’t like the side of me that wears my heart on my sleeve.
The Other Me. During acting practice, I enjoy expressing a different character of myself when reading lines. I try thing I wouldn’t ordinarily do because it is also a challenge.
Seulgi:
The Mood Maker. When I’m around a lot of people, I absolutely can’t stand it when there’s a problem. That is why whether I’m around close friends or strangers I treat everyone fairly.
Enthusiastic Supporters. My parents actively support my entertainment activities. What’s worse is that they saw that I loved singing and dancing so my dad gave me an audition application. It was like that I auditioned and started training.
Beyoncé. Not only does she give a flawless show when she performs and sings, I admire how she does an awfully good job expressing emotional songs.
Running Man. I want to participate in the variety competition that they say is burdened since I talk about it so much. Since I like sports, I hope to a program like ‘Running Man’.
Being Cool Even to Other Girls. Being a woman, I want to hear that I am charming or that I’m cool, not “she’s pretty.” When other women see me, my dream is to grow up to be a person who gives a majestic image that others want to be like.
Meanwhile, Red Velvet’s first digital single “행복 (Happiness)” will drop at noon on August 4th.
