JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong shared on having acted as gangster ‘Heo Young Dal’ in his latest drama.
In the recently ended drama MBC’s Triangle, Kim Jae Joong took the lead role for the first time.
His character ‘Heo Young Dal’ is in the center of the story, as he is related to all the other characters. Starting out as a petty gangster, Heo Young Dal later becomes a successful businessman, going through a big transformation.
In a recent interview, Kim Jae Joong shared, “Heo Young Dal went through a growth too rapidly. Since it was so fast, I worried about how I could act out the process of growth naturally.”
He said, “It doesn’t make sense that someone who didn’t even graduate from an elementary school later takes over a top spot in a company and achieves all those things. So I thought about how I could show it naturally and how I could show more serious and agonizing facial expressions as I change. I think it seemed more natural thanks to the other characters acted by Shorry hyung and Seung Hwan hyung.”
When asked, “Was there any comment or feedback that you remember?” Kim Jae Joong brought up the scene where he went topless.
He said, “Usually you shape your body before revealing it on screen but I thought, ‘a petty gangster with a muscular body? I don’t need to look cool.’ There was also a cooler character, acted out by Im Si Wan. So I tried to dress down and be careless about how I look.”
He continued, “There was a scene where I had to run around the streets wearing just an underwear. At the time, Lee Jong Suk showed his abs in the drama Doctor Stranger. I saw a comment saying, ‘If you don’t have a six pack like Lee Jong Suk, don’t undress yourself.’”
He explained, “I can make one too, if I wanted to. It’s not that I didn’t work hard but it was because of my character. My character was supposed to be not so good at fighting in the beginning. Later on, the character changed but I couldn’t match a gangster who can’t fight with abs.”
He then caused laughter saying, “I will build my abs the next time I go topless. I apologize.”
