SPICA U.S. Bound
U.S. Single Debut And KCON Performance Next Week
July 31, 2014 - SPICA, one of South Korea’s hottest girl groups, is set to make waves in the US. The group will make their US performance debut at KCON - America’s largest annual K-pop concert - on August 10th at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. SPICA will perform with K-pop icons G-Dragon and Girls’ Generation.
To kick off their US invasion, SPICA will partner with Billboard Magazine to debut the album’s lead single (!!! means there's more to come?) and music video, “I Did It,” on Wednesday, August 6th (but the pic says 7th so idk). The single (releasing on ASA Music LLC), is a first completely English language song from the girls, is produced by Oliver ‘Oligee’ Goldstein, Cory Enemy, and Daniel Merlot who have credits with Carly Rae Jepsen, Shakira, Ellie Goulding, Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez.
SPICA is not your average girl group. First off, all five members (Boa, Bohyung, Juhyun, Narae, Jiwon) have all found considerable success on their own and have joined forces to combine their very talented vocals and artistry. Boa has been a vocal trainer for five-time Golden Disk Award winning group INFINITE and SBS MTV Best Of The Best award winning group KARA. Bohyung is the top vocalist and winner of Korean music television channel MNet’s singing competition “100 Seconds Battle”. Juhyun is an accomplished model that starred in music videos for Queen of K-Pop Lee Hyori and rising star Heo Young Saeng. Narae was a top ten finalist on talent competition Superstar K. And Jiwon was featured on the MTV reality show “Diary Of Five Girls” and in the video for Baechigi’s number one hit “Shower of Tears.”
Since their debut in 2012, SPICA has released four singles, two mini albums and one repackaged album to widespread acclaim. Lee Hyori has been a long time mentor to SPICA and has had a hand in producing two singles and two videos for the group.
FINALLY, HQ PICS~~

sry mods, the article changed the release date from 7th to 6th! but the iTunes image on the website says 7th, so I'm confused. guess more info will come out soon
glad I didn't go to sleep or I would've missed the site going live \o/ ASA Music seems to be going all out, I hope they do well!! not sure how long they're staying in the US (dcgallery rumour said 5-15 Aug) but as long as it's not long-term I'm happy. according to this, 'I Did It' is an "up-tempo pop number, with something of a nineties feel" and has "aspects of hip hop and punk". They will have their Korean comeback in late August, and they're preparing a full (?) album. (not trusting B2M until I see teasers)

Date: 2014-08-02 04:12 pm (UTC)Idk I'm probably explaining it poorly, I'm no music industry expert. Spica have strong live vocals which means, if they got the language down, they'd have the radio appearances and live lounges totally down pat and the whole 'hi we're from korea!' adds enough 'individuality' to help them. This is rambly lol whoops

Date: 2014-08-02 06:04 pm (UTC)hmm what you said makes a lot of sense! hopefully companies will start seeing the UK as a viable market and not just go there to shoot pretty videos. speaking of Stooshe, Mamamoo did a cover of their song.. I'd love for Mamamoo to go overseas ;A; (after they've established themselves more in Korea ofc)
edit: I think the decision to go to the US was because B2M had US connections who could make things happen (like KCON, I wasn't expecting that) and they actually have a separate label to promote Spica over there, kinda hard to start from scratch in the UK I suppose.
no such thing as rambly when it's about Spica for me lol, thanks for sharing!

Date: 2014-08-02 06:19 pm (UTC)(also I love it when k-groups do western girl groups covers - normally cause they kill it - and i'm so glad they didn't do black heart omg i hate that song)
It's so weird when they shoot videos here lol whenever I watch BAP's London mv I'm just like, I've been there???? and there??? omg you're just outside the aquariam. what are you doing in london. what is this. it's such a weird feeling i'm not sure how to explain it lol.

Date: 2014-08-05 09:20 am (UTC)Going to another country is never easy. But from I've seen in Europe, some "one-hit wonders" from another country can happen (O-zone particularly struck me lol). Although there are already some girls bands growing back, Little Mix if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if the same happens in the USA, but it doesn't look so. I can be mistaken, I'm not an expert :)
I wish Spica good luck and I hope they're being taken care of, but I don't have big expectations. At least, we're having new songs !

Date: 2014-08-02 06:28 pm (UTC)in any case this US thing will be good media play for them and help to raise their profile back home, that is if B2M knows how to do their PR properly ~_~

Date: 2014-08-02 06:36 pm (UTC)Anyway Billboard seems weirdly invested in nailing the next big thing in kpop crossovers (what with all those bullshit reviews) so I'm just like, please don't embarrass Spica...

Date: 2014-08-02 06:49 pm (UTC)there's this one dude at Billboard who has a boner for Spica and he's tweeted one of their Japanese producers asking to speak with him for an article but idt he's replied yet lol

Date: 2014-08-05 12:50 am (UTC)I'm nervous and excited for them, I just hope they'll enjoy the experience and not get too stressed out! KCON alone is already a great boost for their profile, everything else will be a bonus.
let's keep supporting them even if we can't be there with them ♥

Date: 2014-08-05 07:00 am (UTC)I am actually a fan of this strategy for SPICA. They need something to crack into the fandom culture in Korea because they didn't debut under a big company and their immense talent isn't doing it either. Since this really isn't a full blown push into the US market I think it's just meant to test the waters and as you have said, give them a marketing point. If they can make just a small wave in the US then Korean audiences, and kpop fans especially, will open up to them.
I also think they're doing their debut much different than the others who tried. SPICA is not trying to bring a kpop style to the US, they are a kpop group who already has a style very much fitting the US market. They don't do the aegyo baby talk. Their discography is varied with US styles(some not even popular in Korea) like R&B, Motown, as well as standard pop. And the biggest thing is they all sing, well! None of that trying to explain "visuals" and "dance line" stuff. And they sing live, no lip syncing, autotune, or heavy backup track, which is expected of artists in the US.
I'm hoping for at least a decent showing and then when they return to Korea for the comeback later in the month they can use that momentum to rack up some music show wins. It would be really nice if they can pick up some fans in the US to counter the huge fandoms of other groups to help with the youtube views, SNS posts, and maybe even some digital sales of whatever their song will be for the Korean comeback.
