Dat weave game doe.

Always here for (ass-less)twerk-Hyuna. that split move gives me life! I wish she got more acknowledgement for her dancing.

She's not a good dancer tho lol, she's one of those people who can follow moves/choreo but doesn't put in strength in her movements nor does she have a good grasp on the beat. At most she's super flexible which allows her to do some moves others wouldn't, so she can make up for her faults with that.

I didn't say she was Boa, but she's definitely better than a lot of other idols who get hyped up as dancing queens.

That video showcases the exact thing I was talking about, but yeah she's about as good as any typical girl group lead dancer.

I guess you can only be popular for your most evident thing, which in her case is sex appeal.

A) Those lists are comprised of the same 10 popular people because they can't mention anyone else or people will disagree and the list will be pointless.

B) You haven't bothered reading my other comment I can tell.

You just can't deal with the fact that not everyone is going to jump for joy for her, when she clearly is not a good singer, not a great rapper, and not even a good dancer in my eyes and the eyes of other's you have so conveniently labelled as haters. I didn't post the comment randomly, I posted it considering someone said she should get attention for her dancing.

Hyuna over the years has developed her image due to her body, face, and stage presence. No one on earth is going to praise Hyori for her singing and dancing in the exact same manner.

Get over yourself and we can end this here.

I would say that she is by definition a good dancer, but not a great one. Hyuna doesn't have much artistry or expression in her dancing, her movements are not ever as sharp as they're meant to be, I don't think she's especially skilled, but she is slightly above average when compared to most other dancers in kpop. She doesn't even compare to some of the other main dancers in kpop though, for sure.

Exactly. But I guess my standards are higher because I don't consider her being better than the majority of bad people as good lol, but I can see your point.

Well, I'm not comparing her so much to the obviously bad people (Tiffany of SNSD, Dasom from Sistar) but the kind of middle range dancers I guess LOL the ones no one makes fun of for being a bad dancer but no one would call a good dancer either. I think she at one point probably had potential to be a much better dancer than she is. With at least the basic process of being able to easily pick up choreography and her flexibility show she had some natural ability. But I think her training became pretty fully focused on making sure she seemed "sexy". And to do that generic sexy choreography that so many artists get, being overly languid with your movements is pretty easy to get away with. I actually don't find her "sexy" dancing to be very sexy when she does it because I feel she lacks the performance ability / charisma to put that "oomph" behind it.

I was thinking about that earlier today because at one point I was definitely a huge fan of hers than a bunch of stuff just made me fall out. During Change she was definitely a lot better than she is now, and that dance battle between Minzy Nicole Gain and her had interesting choreo that was kind of off, but showed potential like you said. You're probably right, or she just got bad choreographers in general because in that instagram video the person she's dancing with isn't dancing particularly well either. And I agree with you on that last point too.

What I meant when I say "bad dancers" is that even the main dancers that get attention for their dancing are bad in my eyes. Figuratively, my scale is basically your good is my average and so forth. But we're seeing the same things.

Date: 2014-07-27 08:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] msgrottesca.livejournal.com
Oh I definitely agree on most main dancers not actually being particularly good. Same goes for most main vocals not being as good as they're hyped of to be LOL. A big thing is so many of these main dancers can only dance in one style and many do not even have any choreographic skills of their own which is bizarre to me. Many of them are created into main dancers to give them something to do besides be pretty, and don't actually have a natural affinity for dancing. Very few kpop dancers are actually impressive to me.

Yup yup, I hear you on that. It's kind of a shame when they put that many hours into something and that's what it produces. Just to shift blame so to speak though, I also wish companies wouldn't just pick people with nice faces and try to force them into something. It would be a lot easier on them to just pick people who are good at things, even if they're not the ~best looking~ people will call them goodlooking anyways and appreciate their talent. I mean that's sort of what happened for Hyorin, people don't seem to think she's pretty based on general standards but have grown to appreciate her talent and focused on things like her smile.

Out of curiosity, which kpop dancers do you like?

The only one's off the top of my head are Kai (although I think they way, way, way overstate his ballet training LOL it's pretty obvious) and like... Hyoyeon maybe, although I think her skill has possibly degraded a bit as SNSD's choreo has become more and more lazy and hand dance-y. I kind of forgot how good she was until I saw AOA perform Genie and the girl who did her dance solo just... did not do a good job at all LOL it's not even a complicated little dance solo at all but Hyoyeon makes it work and have so much more charisma and energy and sharpness than the other girl who seemingly flip-flopped her way through it. It made me appreciate her more. I think BoA is legit very good and I really miss her career in Korea because the choreo was much more intense than what she does in Japan - or at least used to be, back when she could lipsync more on Korean tv LOL. And there are plenty of others from other companies but I'm kind of blanking at the moment. SM have put out some very good dancers but then some of their "main dancers" are... basically just glorified visuals LOL

I think a lot of groups have toned down their choreography as lipsyncing became less and less accepted, actually. When I first got into kpop in like 2005-2006, literally almost EVERYONE lipsynced on pretty much every show. I'm not sure what caused the change but I guess in a way it has negatively impacted the amount of dancing they can do without completely screwing up vocally. The only dancing I've ever done has been in musicals and some dance groups in school and dancing while singing can really take a lot out of you, lol.

ETA: oh, forgot to mention Minzy! I actually think she's quite the dancer but never gets to show it because 2NE1's choreography is tailored towards the more popular members who can't dance very well LOL. But she always catches my attention when they perform live because she's the only member who doesn't look sloppy doing the choreo. I hate that she's pigeon holed into only doing sexy dances tbh.

Kai's ballet training is the biggest BS SM has ever tried to sell us. I would've preferred them focusing on the jazz portion of his training because that would be more believable. I feel the same about Hyoyeon to the point where I feel like she's underrated in a sense, because everyone kind of says "oh yeah she's not that good anymore or it's toned down" but other people are still unable to do the choreo she's done. I don't know much about BoA but I've seen her performances and her moves are always on point so I can respect that. For me I sort of see Jia with some potential if JYP let's her and stops forcing everyone else in Miss A, from what I saw in her predebut stuff she's better than Fei. I think there's a lot of overrated male dancers considering they all usually dance the same genre of hip hop, and at a pretty average level. I think the only one I was interested in lately were the guys from Seventeen since they even choreograph their own stuff.

Ita about the choreography point, I got in right before 2NE1 debuted and by then it was all about having point-choreo and in between that it was just generic movement to sort of fill the beat. I'll never forget Minzy's dance solo in that battle I mentioned earlier, I still watch it sometimes just to be in awe. It doesn't even make sense for her to be the "sexy" member because choreo doesn't seem to pick up that image for her??? YG might as well just let her dance tbh, instead of letting someone like Lydia Paek become the known dancer of YG. It's just not the smartest marketing tool.

Ah shit, I completely forgot Miss A! I think everyone in Miss A other than Suzy are much above the dancing level of most idol groups and it makes me sad that JYP gives them such basic choreo... although basically all JYP groups have incredibly lackluster choreography. I know Miss A (or at least Min/Fei/Jia) are capable of more than they get but of course as usual it's just the usual body waves and booty pops that all female idol groups get stuck with LOL.

If we're getting into terms of dancing other genres, I think Hakyeon/N from VIXX has a very interesting blend of dance influences - a bit messy, but he implements some things from dance genres that I've never seen any other idols use. This was when he was much younger and predebut (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewsj5yY70S8) so I've always been interested to see what he could put together now with all the training he's had but sadly all of his dance solos since debut have been mostly him trying to be sexy with lots of repetitive body waves and what not LOL I feel like he could put together something much more interesting.

Yes! Minzy in that battle slayed everyone and honestly made me embarrassed for the other girls because she was just about the only one who did any actual dancing rather than... gesturing and chest popping. Unfortunately Nicole is another main dancer I think is over rated and I'll never know why anyone from BEG was in that battle LOL. Ga-in's a great performer and an adequate singer but not so much a dancer.

I hate the point-choreo trend because it has made everyone's dancing so incredibly boring, ugh and some of the attempts at point-choreo have been down right embarrassing (Sistar in particular have received some atrocious attempts at point-choreo)

I always thought the choreo for Breathe was so under done. It had its moments but it could've been way better, same with GBBB :/. Kinda feels like after they debuted and they did will, JYP decided to slack off.

I knew N did the GR8U dance which already impressed me because it's my second fave Vixx choreo behind On&On, but damn that was pretty interesting. You're right that it's rather messy but at the same time it's totally refreshing. Maybe with a little more notoriety and a solo concert we'll get to see more of that. It seems like he mixed voguing and whatnot with contempo, which could prove to be interesting in the future.

I feel like Nicole suffers the same fate as Hyuna in terms of dancing. From what I've seen she has her moments but she's not good at keeping energy throughout a routine, and she also lacks rhythm sometimes. It's kind of sad that KPOP just pushes people because they're in big groups, but not for the talent they actually possess. I feel like Bora is kind of underexposed as she has all this dance training, yet she's always Hyorin's back up dancer. When you put her next to Hyorin you can see the difference, and I wonder if it's just for me but my eye gravitates to Bora more often. Even when she gets her solos it's crap like the Gayo Daejun piece that doesn't really showcase much, other than that she can be thrown around. I hope she and Joon can do a piece someday.

I think the most cohesive attempt at point choreo were Give it to Me and Alone, but the former more because it actually matched moments in the song and played around with vertical levels the way Kpop groups normally don't (off the top of my head I can only think of AOA doing something similar). SuJu's Sorry Sorry was the first thing I ever saw in terms of Kpop and...lol...
