Infinite’s Hoya brought up his relationship with his father on broadcast.

While recording MBC’s Quiz to Change the World, Hoya revealed, “I stopped talking to my father after I dropped out of high school without telling my parents.”

Hoya, who was originally studying to enter a police academy, began dreaming of become a singer when he was in middle school and decided to leave school.

Hoya said, “I wasn′t on good terms with my father but after I dropped out, the relationship got worse. I didn’t contact him for 8 years.”

Hoya also said, “I thought my family was rich when I was young because my parents would buy me anything I wanted but I realized later that they were actually struggling from a lot of debt, to the point where red sequestration notes were tagged on things in the house. After I started making money, I paid off all the debt for my parents.”

the k-netizen comments for this article were way harsh =/ i'm not huge on hoya tbh but i find what he did admirable. it's my goal to be able to pursue my passions while supporting my parents

Yeah he's not my favourite person in the world but he's talked about why he did what he did and it was understandable. It was pretty sad to watch him cry on Immortal Song when Ali sang a song about fathers too. Sunggyu's story is just as heartbreaking.

they're dissing him for dropping out and not being truly filial to his parents since he dropped out. it's all very side-eye worthy comments

thanks for replying!
but that's ridiculous. so many other idols have done that and they get praised for following their dreams. maybe they didn't let him be filial? poor baby getting this negative feedback for doing something good.

Yeah. I mean lookin at this objectively he's done a lot more than other people would ever manage to- and more than some would even be willing to do- for his parents, and though I'm pretty sure his parents only wanted the best for him, and though I don't ever think not speaking to your family is the way to go, he stood up and actually followed his dreams, and that can only be admirable.
(Sorry for butting in ^^)

So is he on better terms with his father/parents now? For some reason, I wouldn't think so because of the reason he paid their debts off

good for him for following his dreams, even with knowing how his father is. not everyone is destined for the life their parents want for them. i had problems for a bit with my mom too when i stopped going to university.
and paying his parents debt may have made it worse for their relationship, but that's what a good son should do.
hoya is just the best <3

:( I always admire idols who go after their dream without their parents' support bc that's such a hard thing to do
