My Name, Mamamoo
First part of the interview posted here
The rookie group that has caught the eyes of many since they appeared has been born. From their unique name, Mamamoo, down to their visuals and skills — nothing about this group is ordinary. Mamamoo who entered the studio in lime-colored, check-patterned ensembles sang acapella at the photo journalist’s request, capturing the attention of everyone in the studio in one swoop. At their individual shoots, they also showed off the song or rap they were confident in performing, proving they are a talented group.
Solar, Moonbyul, Hwa Sa and Whee In, make up the 4-member girl group. Like their unique member names, the group name is also distinctive. The name ‘Mamamoo’, is taken from the sound of a baby’s cooing. ‘Mama’ is a universal word known all over the world, so the name holds the meaning of being instinctively approached by people.
"At first I opposed the name, Mamamoo. I thought that there should be something a little better we could choose. I thought it didn’t roll off the tongue easily, nor did it seem like a group name. However, when we sang the name, it seemed to stick." (Whee In)
"I liked it. During our trainee period, when the team wasn’t decided yet, there was a performance for Quincy Jones’s visit to Korea. We ended up performing at the after party and there were so many famous people there. We sang an incomplete version of ‘Mr. Ambiguous’, but at the time the song was titled ‘Mamamoo’. It must have been fate." (T/N: Article left out who said this.)
Mamamoo’s first mini album ‘HELLO’ was released on June 18th. Prior to debut, they received support from K.Will, Wheesung, Bumkey, etc. In January, they released “Don’t Be Happy” with Hip-Hop musician, Bumkey. In February, they released “Peppermint Chocolate” with K.Will and Wheesung. Following that, they released “Hi Hi Ha He Ho” with Hip-Hop duo, Geeks in May. The songs consecutively reached high ranks on music charts without promoting on music broadcasts.
They have finally released their official debut song, “Mr. Ambiguous”. It’s a song with a funky rhythm that matches the retro genre. The song is a direct message from women to men who behave ambiguously. The song was composed by Kim Do Hoon who had explosive success with “Some” this year. Mamamoo’s soongguridangdang dance, mustache dance and unique performances are factors that are gaining attention. As expected, even though they are rookies there is hot reaction towards them.
"The fact that our songs are played on the streets is amazing to us. We had no idea what the reactions were to us. Of course, to some degree, couldn’t it have been because of the synergy of the very famous sunbaenims we sang with?" (Whee In)
"Not too long ago while riding the bus, I saw the person in front of us search up our song and listen to it. I felt really proud! At music broadcasts, K.Will sunbaenim always tells us after every performance, ‘I really enjoyed it’. This also fills me with pride." (Moonbyul)
"Wheesung sunbaenim also called the representative after our debut stage and said, ‘I saw Mamamoo’s performance. Was that live or AR (T/N: Lip Sync)?’. Of course, it was live!" (Solar)
Mamamoo doesn’t just sing, but they compose, write lyrics and participate in the creation of their performances. The Soongguridangdang dance from “Mr. Ambiguous” was also born from the hands of Mamamoo. The members also personally direct when they are in the recording studio. Seeing how they are able to make everything themselves, the nickname of “Self-Sown” idols stuck. Despite being rookie singers, their album contains various genres such as: Jazz, R&B, Ballad, Hip-Hop, etc.
"Mamamoo’s music can’t be defined. Our album consists of 7 tracks and the genre of each is different. We will show everyone that we are able to absorb several genres. Mamamoo’s music can’t be put in a mold." (Moonbyul)
Upon asking Mamamoo their goals, Hwa Sa counted ‘one, two, three’ and they all screamed out, “rookie award”. Leader Solar said, “I really want to receive the rookie award. If the staff we work with and fans felt pleased, I think we’d be really happy.” Hwa Sa stated, “How about going on an overseas trip with company family members if we receive it?” Mamamoo also spoke about their goals that lie beyond the rookie award.
"We are seen as a peculiar and unique group, but we’d like to have a strong color rather than a showy one." (Whee In)
"I want to hear people say, ‘That’s Mamamoo-like’. My goal is for our country’s people to have a sense of pride in Mamamoo." (Hwa Sa)
"My goal is to make Mamamoo into an icon. As you know, Lee Hyori is an icon in herself. I’d like for Mamamoo to be known in that way, as well." (Solar)
