Sewol-Documentary
by JAMES S. KIM

A private committee in South Korea is raising funds for a documentary on the Sewol ferry disaster, according to Yonhap News. Director Im Jong-tae announced plans to release A Goose’s Dream on the first anniversary of the disaster, which would be April 16 next year.

The committee plans to raise 400 million won (approximately $393,000) through crowdfunding until Oct. 10. Around 300 million won will go towards production costs, and another 100 million won to advertising.

Im told the Korea Times that the two-hour film will delve into a variety of topics, from what actually happened during the sinking to the ongoing rescue efforts, as well as corruption in South Korean society as a whole. Im said film would also be a tribute to the victims.

The title of the documentary refers to a song performed by Lee Bo-mi, a student at Danwon High School who was one of the 293 people who died in the accident. She apparently had aspirations to become a singer. You can listen to a segment of Lee practicing the song below.

The Sewol sank off South Korea’s southwest coast on April 16 earlier this year, leaving 293 dead, many of them high school students who were on a field trip to Jeju Island. As of last Friday, 11 people remain missing as rescue efforts continue.

For more information on A Goose’s Dream, you can stay up-to-date with the film’s Facebook and Daum pages.

since it's a documentary, i'm not as apprehensive as i would be about a feature film, but even then it seems like the type of project that would be better for a 5 year or 10 year anniversary, not necessarily the first year (it also probably feels too soon because as of right now it's only been 3 months since it happened so any mention of any film is just like... what..). i hope it's done tastefully and respectfully, either way, though.

I just hope they have enough information about it all gathered, so that they give us stuff we didn't already know

I just watched a documentary on Netflix called How Ships Sink and it was actually really interesting, it went over the Costa Concordia and the Titanic along with some other ships.

Even though it's a documentary, I think it's too soon for it...

Too soon, even for a documentary.

But there are still 11 bodies missing after three months? That's awful. I hope they haven't been washed away.

they probably have unless they're locked inside cabins, some of the ones recovered earlier were several kilometers from the ship :/

I don't think it's too soon, actually. i think the direction the documentary is going to isn't just about the students, but the cause and the aftermath, the dirty politics and all.

the government and the family are fighting about the sewol special law and what it's gonna entail, because the government refuses to include the family into making it and offering affirmative action for students from danwon high school, when the family is asking for more thorough investigations. the whole thing from the ferry sewl before the accident to today with protests from the family versus park geun hye supporters is shady as fuck and i feel like sewol ferry should be something that can't use enough awareness.

so it's the government offering it, not the family demanding it? i saw some translated netizen comments somewhere saying they were being greedy by demanding places at university and was like 'quoi??'

the idea of it was split among the parents in the beginning and among themselves they decided that's not what they want. it's the government pushing for it, and i think it's kinda like "here, have this and go away" kind of motive. there are more urgent and necessary issues to be covered and the government's just ignoring it.

Ins't it a bit too soon, especially for those who lost someone?
