“Roommate” Cast Members Criticized for Behavior While Driving

Members of the cast of the celebrity share-house reality show “Roommate” are receiving criticisms from viewers for their behaviors while driving.

On the 11th episode of the show aired on July 13, the roommates went on a vacation together, with Seo Kang Joon, Park Min Woo, Park Bom, Song Ga Yeon, and Hong Soo Hyun driving to the camping site.

While driving, Park Min Woo, who said that he could not sleep the previous night and was tired, started falling asleep while at the wheel, eventually drifting towards the guard rail. Seo Kang Joon noticed the drifting car and tried to wake up Park Min Woo.

Once alert, Park Min Woo turned the car, but it still swerved, causing Park Bom to shout out a swear word, which was bleeped out in the show.

The viewers are criticizing how Park Min Woo had to drive despite being in a bad condition, and how Seo Kang Joon was not wearing his seat belt while sitting in the passenger seat. Park Bom’s swearing is also receiving criticism.

SBS's variety show "Roommate" is in danger with another controversy and keep getting low ratings since first episode.

According to Nielson Korea, the viewer ratings of 'Roommate' latest episode broadcasted on the 13th was 4.9%, recorded its lowest rate that day, as decreasing 0.4% point. SBS's average ratings for the whole programs of "Good sunday" is 6.3%, far lower than KBS2 ‘Happy Sunday’(12.2%) and MBC ‘Sunday, Sunday Night’(9.1%).

This poor ratings result is caused by many controversies in ‘Roommate’. 2NE1 member Park Bom has recently got into her own "drug scandal" but her appearance was still aired without editing, making viewers angry. In the latest episode, 'Roommate' became the center of the controversy again as Park Min Woo fell asleep while driving car and nearly caused an accident. Another member Seo Kang Joon who sat in the passenger seat didn’t tie the seat belt. All of these problems made viewers turn their back on 'Roommate".

i remember reading when the show first began they planned for 50 episodes... it's only on episode 10 or 11 now so there should be about 40 left? i'm sure it'll be cut down by a lot if it already hasn't though due to the low ratings and endless controversies.

I feel that way about a lot of variety shows, actually. I don't know if the programs run longer over there, or if they have fewer commercial breaks, but they could really use a vicious editor to combat the bloaty-y-ness. Sometimes I like the hangout feeling, but most of the time, it's just totally fatiguing.

2 hours (!!!) sounds like my nightmare, though. No show can really sustain a narrative for that long. I haven't watched roommate and this is scaring me off, which is a pity because I like so many of the cast members.

So funny how ppl get mad over something like that when I hear people openly saying TERRIBLE curse words on the streets in Korea. Same with the seat belt thing, never seen anyone wear them in the cars and my friends say I'm "so cute and innocent" for putting mine on when I get in cars with them lmao

Reality shows usually use drama, negative comments etc. to get more viewers. So it makes sense that they would show negative things to make people watch, like omg did they really do that, let me go see is the reaction the producers expect. It's shady as hell.

yup and not wearing your seatbelt. i remember hearing that it's not very common in SK to wear your seatbelt though? i'm not sure. but i get scared whenever i see someone without a seatbelt especially in the front seat!. i was in a horrific accident a few years ago and had it not been for my seatbelt they told me i would have been killed instantly.

Yeah, when I was in SK, my friend told me wearing seat belts, especially in the back seat, was rare. This bit of information came about when her mum was talking us to my friend's doctor appointment and I automatically put on my seatbelt and I noticed my friend hesitate for a moment before following suit. She basically told me she only put her seatbelt on because I had done so... But yeah, I just can't get into a car without buckling up. My parents conditioned me to do so, even when they tend to forget.

It's the same in China. They strap the seatbelts down over there so you can't use them. The first time I got into a car and tried to put on my seatbelt the driver told me not to bother. I was pretty uncomfortable that first time, but I slowly got used to it, which is not a good thing.

I like this show and it's format. I wish they would do a 2nd season with new guests but it seems like they're not :(
I would love a just-idols season or idols sharing room with "real singers". (I like the guests on the show right now but putting in a lot of idols that i like is the only way to keep me hooked on a reality show lol)

it is totally scripted, i am sorry but since ever since episode 8 or 7 they have been showing Minwoo under a negative light the first few episodes everyone in the house liked him and he made everyone feel welcomed. and then suddenly they only show him negative or not at all. and it really felt scripted from episode 4 on words. they are really this kids life and they don't give a shit.

The last time I drove whilst sleepy was after some black Friday shopping after being awake for over 30 hours. So stupid. My friend fell asleep too and I only notched because the freeway had the bumpy reflectors on the lanes.

I don’t really see him telling Kang Joon to tell his friends to introduce themselves as a conflict though. They should have introduced themselves especially since Min Woo was giving them gifts.

So really only one conflict and that was the driving thing. He apologized, they forgave him. No one was acting awkwardly besides him.

i agree with you but i have to say that its too scripted they are making him involved in everything because he is home all the time.
i am beginning to hate the PDs of this show they are really ruining him, i am not a Minwoo stan or whatever but i think its just unfair, he is trying so hard to make the show fun and they are ruining him. Park Bom i feel for her she should be cut from the show to save her she is a good person but every time he see her on screen some complains. i don't care that much about the issue but i feel like this show is a ticking time bomb after they ruin half of them they are going to stop the show leaving those stars ruined to try to salvage their reputations.

I think most of the roommate episodes are interesting enough, this one was good because of the tension too. I think people are just criticizing it because there are idols on it, and for whatever reason people despise idols with everything in them.

I really didnt like this episode. The editing was all over the place, and whoever let Minwoo drive was an idiot. Knowing that ratings isn't doing so well probably contributes to a lot of the problems I have with this show right now. I grew really irritated with the constant previews of the issues the roommates needed to sort out. Once in the beginning was fine, but stop with it during the episode....and then to get to the end and it wasn't even there?

The way they edited this made it seem like they had a for real accident, not just a 2 second swerve. Terribly dangerous driving while tired, especially when overheated. I've dozed on a long drive before, it's scary, but it does happen and you're not a villain for it. I like Min Woo, but damn, every time they focus on him it's about something negative; jealousy, hurt feelings, now dishes and poor driving. Good luck to your career dude.

And they can just leave Bom out of it. Most people would swear in that situation.


ETA: But I'm glad some commenters were calling out the PDs for their shenanigans. They should've gotten them a car that worked properly and had someone else drive if Kang Jun was too nervous and Min Woo too sleepy.
