IU Confesses Having Suffered from Eating Disorder on ‘Healing Camp’

IU confessed that she suffered from bulimia in the past.

After debuting in 2008, IU has been promoting actively in the music industry as well as on small screens.

While recording July 14’s broadcast of SBS’s Healing Camp, IU revealed, “I always felt insecure.”

IU said, “I felt empty inside so I tried to fill the emptiness with food. I ate to the point where I had to throw up so I had to get medical treatment.”

The full story of IU will be revealed on July 14 on SBS’s Healing Camp.

IU Reveals She Received Treatment for Bulimia on “Healing Camp"

Singer IU, who previously talked about receiving pressure from her family before she made her debut, continued sharing her personal battles and has revealed her very personal experience of battling with an eating disorder at the filming for the episode of the SBS show, “Healing Camp.”

The episode, which will air later tonight, July 14, features the young singer, who really opens up. “My heart was empty. I always felt anxious after I made my debut and from a certain time, I filled the void through food,” said IU. “Rather than feeling good, I always had that feeling of anxiety thinking there’s still something lacking,” continued the singer.

“At that time, I ate until I threw up and I even sought treatment,” revealed IU.

In this episode, IU also made some curious remarks, claiming that she is an “overrated singer” who really “cheated properly” with her latest album, “Flower Bookmark.”

Find out more about IU’s ordeal and what she really meant by the statements she made on the airing of “Healing Camp” tonight.

IU Speaks of Pre-Debut Family Pressures on “Healing Camp”

IU has spoken of the difficulties of her pre-debut family life, admitting that her childhood was full of tough times. The singer was speaking on the SBS talk show “Healing Camp,” which aired in the evening of July 7.

In a frank interview on the show, she revealed that a great strain was put on her at an early age when financial pressures resulted in tough times for her family.

She said, “My father’s business project failed, and it meant that various members of my family ended up living in different places.”

The singer recalled her reaction to a traumatic occasion when her mother asked her if she would prefer to live with her, or to go to stay with her father. “I told her I’d rather live alone than live with her,” said IU. “And it’s something I regret saying to this very day.”

IU’s musical debut came at the age of 15, when she released the mini album “Growing Up.” The star has recently featured on a track for g.o.d’s comeback album, “Chapter 8.”

IU Confesses that Her Self-Esteem Goes Up When She is Dating

IU honestly shared her thoughts on dating.

During the July 7 broadcast of SBS’s Healing Camp, IU revealed that her self-esteem goes up when she is dating.

IU said, “I usually have low self-esteem but when I’m dating, my self-esteem goes up because of the fact that the person I like has chosen to like none other than me.”

She added, “When I’m in love I think everything about that person is great. So that makes me think of myself as great, which increases my self-esteem.”

IU Confesses that She is Going Through Puberty Now

IU confessed that she′s going through puberty now.

July 7’s broadcast of SBS’s Healing Camp will air a special episode featuring Kim Chang Wan, IU and Akdong Musician.

IU confessed during filming that she never went through puberty.

IU surprised everyone by saying, “There was no time period in my life which I can call adolescence. I even thought of myself as a cyborg.”

Recollecting her past when she couldn’t wholly feel emotions such as happiness or sadness, IU said, “There were difficult times in the past but I could not feel that I was struggling.”

Having spent her youth without going through the emotional trials of puberty, IU confessed, “I think I’m going through puberty now.”

i think she means emotionally like the mood swings and stuff because she wasn't allowed to before due to being in the public eye.

That's what I'm getting from it, especially the 'cyborg' bit. How hard is it to have to clamp down on all of yourself (personality, emotions, etc.), especially for a teenager?

It is possible to not have the period when dealing with an eating disorder like bulemia or anorexia. I guess that's what she meant. Myself was struggling with those illnesses and didn't had the period for about 3 months in a row at the peak

This is so true for so many idols, who have given up their adolescence to become an idol. I hope that when they're older, they'll think that the sacrifice was worth it. I'm not quite sure why everyone would be surprised though. Isn't the training and recruitment of idols at a young age known to the public?

it kinda shows since i've been following her since long ago, so i am not surprised at all hearing this. depression and self-anxiety she has for herself, always looking down of her own look/skill.

girl you are fine, you are doing just fine.

yeah, now the nasty comments about the bed selca have ceased somewhat and people are back to recognising that she's talented......but damn it must have hurt her so badly at the time, poor kid.

What does she mean as never went through puberty? Does she mean the rebellious stage that every teenager went through once in their life?

I never go through that one either. I never thought its a thing to go through that phase up until a few years back when Arashi discussed how Aiba never went through that phase either. Then I realized that its a normal things for it to happen as my other siblings went through that phase too.

Really? She relate puberty with eating disorder or bulimia? I think she meant 'puberty' for the emotional thingie instead.

Eating disorders are often used for gaining a sense of control and achieving "perfection" in life, so I'm assuming she means that she wants to stop obsessing over all those things that ultimately made her feel deprived/empty. It's actually really common for a lot of people to spend their entire adolescence going according to the rules as much as possible, all the responsibilities and pressures that come with puberty more or less force them into compliance. And yeah, for an idol it's probably a thousand times worse

Eating disorders can suppress menstruation (periods), so it possible she just didn't start with that for a long time, which definitely is a big part of puberty for girls. The cyborg comment sounds more like she meant the emotional sturm and drang, though.

this is true, but the rest of it makes me think it's just a poor translation and she actually meant the emotional side of things rather than physical

yeah korean ppl usually refer to the emotional aspect of it at least in my experience. like emotional instability and mood swings, or rebellious tendencies = puberty in this context.

i really don't think IU is implying that she didn't go thru puberty (as in have her period) because of bulimia as other ppl are saying.

Could've guessed she had severely low self worth but didn't know it was due to having an unstable home life. Poor kid. I feel bad that she didn't come to terms with this before she became a target for that predator from Suju who exploited her at such a young age. I hope she can move on to find some peace from within.

Just the fact that she dated EH had me worrying for her. I can totally see a 15 year-old IU defining her whole self-worth on the fact that she has an "older" bf who's from a popular group.

I wish she had dated TY instead. He seems like a decent bf (although he's a tryhard )

is she the (or one of the) only idol(s) who has spoken up & flat-out admitted to having an eating disorder? i feel like this is ridiculously common in the kpop industry, like one of those open secret things... =\

There's really not much I can say. I adore her so so much, and just trying to imagine what a huge decision it must be for her to reveal all of these things to the public ... it's incredible. She is so strong. I'm so glad to hear that she sought treatment, and I hope she's at a place where she can deal with these things now. Or that she will be at some point. ♥

A drastic change of tone, but if anyone's interested: From what I understand from the clip, she is talking about when she first asked Kim Chang-wan to do a remake of "Meaning of You" with her. He asked her what kind of meaning this song held for her, and she answered that a man that she had a crush on when she was in middle school really enjoyed listening to it. She also specified that it was a man and not a boy.
I think Kim Chang-wan is further saying that he couldn't really imagine how they would do this kind of duet and [jokingly] that he would not have sung it with a male singer, but I'm not so sure about that.

She's talked about her crazy diet before, eating like one apple and a sweet potato in a day - and this was something she said she was doing at the time, like it was normal for her.

I hope she eats healthily and well now, she's still so young and to do such damage to her body at this age.....this industry and netizens are ridiculous when it comes to physical appearance and weight. Poor girl.

a close friend from high school had anorexia during our last year ... sigh god knows how difficult is to overcome this kind of disorders, relapse it's always present
I hope she gets a strong support network to protect her from this industry pressure
