Making a perfect transformation into an actor, whils still remaining a member of MBLAQ, Lee Joon recently starred in tvN’s Gapdong, receiving much positive feedback for his acting ability.
Having spent the past 5-6 months as the psychopath ‘Ryu Tae Oh,’ Lee Joon revealed his thoughts on ending the drama and gaining recognition for his role, in a recent interview with Newsen.
“I have a mixed feeling about having ended Gapdong. I’m excited but regretful at the same time. As I spent long time living as ‘Ryu Tae Oh,’ I became attached to the character and I also had great time with the other cast and staff members. Even though the project is over, I think I will continue to have the project in my heart for a while.”
‘Ryu Tae Oh’ that Lee Joon acted out is a psychopath who is numb to others’ pain or suffering. Most of the scenes required him to express feelings that even the veteran actors have hard acting out, but Lee Joon received a lot of love for perfectly pulling them off.
“I am really grateful. People might think this is an obvious answer but I’m sincerely thankful for all the love I received. I think people recognized my hard work. They recognized that I was working hard to present myself as ‘Ryu Tae Oh’ from Gapdong, instead of singer Lee Joon or actor Lee Joon.”
About his focus point in acting out the psychopath, Lee Joon commented, “My facial expressions. I practiced so I could convey ‘Ryu Tae Oh’s feelings with my facial expressions alone. I worked hard to relax my facial muscles and to be able to use the muscles that I’m not used to using. I tried to focus on each scene. When I was practicing, I repeated the same scene over and over again until I could express the feelings.”

Having received numerous positive feedbacks, what is the response that Lee Joon remembers the most?
“I was the happiest to hear that ‘casting Lee Joon was a godly move’ and I remember it the most. Because I felt like it meant that I was doing well in carrying out my given role.”
Although many people praised him for his acting, Lee Joon was not completely satisfied.
He said, “I still think that I have a lot to learn. I will continue to think that I’m lacking and continuously work hard and practice hard. When I monitor myself, I always see what I lack in. I think to myself that I need to work harder. I think it’s because I check what I need to improve on, instead of just being harsh on myself.”
Lee Joon revealed that he still has thirst and concerns for acting. “I always wonder, ‘Can people see sincerity in my acting?’ I want to do better and work harder.”
