plussize-66100

Korean celebrities are constantly praised or criticized for whether or not their weight and size fit within the narrow standard of beauty. This pressure trickles down to the average man and woman as well, stigmatizing those who do not achieve it. In a society that highly values looks, it may seem like the ideal type is unobtainable for many. But now there's a magazine on the market that is trying to redefine what it means to be beautiful.

The new fashion magazine 66100 targets "plus-sized readers," and hopes to send an empowering message to everyone who does not conform to the ideal. The title "66100" refers to Korean clothing sizes that are considered undesirable. In Korea, size 66 is an extra-large in women's clothing and size 100 is large for men. The magazine founder, 28-year-old Kim Ji-yang, hopes that it will create a new market for plus-sized men and women who have a very hard time finding Korean stores who carry a variety of sizes.

As the first Korean model to be featured at Full Figured Fashion Week in Los Angeles, Kim Ji-yang is 5'5, 154 pounds and wears a size 88, which is considered XXL in Korea. She says, "The reason why (Koreans) are obsessed about dieting is because they feel insecure and fearful about being excluded. Beauty is not about whether a person is fat or not. It's about having the confidence to know you are beautiful the way you are."

She hopes that the creation of the magazine will help people love themselves and find their own definition of beauty. However, the biggest challenge she faces now is finding plus-sized Korean models who already feel confident enough about their bodies to be in the magazine.

I didn't see this posted when I backtracked and thought it would be a nice piece to read

This is great! Even in the US sometimes I get frustrated at some stores lack of sizing options, but I can't even imagine the struggle it would be in a place like Korea to find clothes you like in plus sizes. I hope she's successful!!

The model is super pretty *A*
It's sad to think there might not be a lot of plus-sized Korean models out there who have the same kinda confidence in their own body. Props to her (and any other future models) for her participation. I feel like you'd have to be fearless and strong-minded to wanna stand out in a culture like Korea's got, with all the ridiculous conditions people put around appearances.
I hope this gets positive feedback instead of backlash in Korea.

I hope more ladies and men in Korea check this out. Seems great and it's nice that there are people who feel like they don't need to conform to the high standards and are just comfortable and want others to feel the same. It sometimes feel like there's not enough of that anywhere. Confidence really does go a long way.

My sister (who is living in Korea), when she was telling me about this, pointed out that a Korean "XL" is actually more like an American "L". But it's so awesome to see a "plus sized" model who actually looks like their clientele, instead of the 6'2" valkyries who are a size 14. Not that it's wrong to be a magnificent valkyrie woman, but they're sure as hell not representative of most of the "plus sized" client base.

That is awesome for her to start this up, but I find it crazy that 154 on 5'4 frame is considered plus size.. That's a healthy, normal sized body imo.

i'm pretty sure that weight at that height is considered plus sized everywhere

Date: 2014-06-28 07:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ideservestars.livejournal.com
except not, the average weight for most european countries is close to 150 and it's 165 for north america..

From: [identity profile] oppameansit.livejournal.com
the fact that the average weight is similar doesn't mean that it's not still plus sized

anyone who wears a 14 or above in us sizes is considered plus sized (some brands even start at 12), and an 88 in korean clothing is a 14 is us sizes (and an xl in international sizes)

there's nothing wrong with being plus sized, and people who are that height and weight are generally plus sized

I'm exactly 5'4" and I weigh about 155, but I wear Medium and size 8 at most. I think it's more about how your body distributes the weight than anything.

it's actually very interesting that you're the same height and weight as the model but she's a 14+ and you're an 8

same! also, years ago, I was a size 0 at 130 pounds and it's not even vanity sizing. I think the typical east asian has smaller bones and are differently proportioned, though, so more weight to them would look bigger.

FUCKING YES i'm an European girl living in s.korea and while i wouldn't consider myself plus sized (5'7, 150lb), it's a nighmare buying clothes here. Everything is super small, only fit for the petite Korean girls.
There ARE many of those here, but there're also a lot of other body types. And I keep wondering what do high school girls wear? There's a lot of (sometimes severely) overweight girls here. ;_;

this is cool but i find that a lot of fat acceptance media only show a specific type of fat as beautiful. like some people are just built wide instead of narrow and that's not fat to me. you're not gonna see anyone with rolls, a big stomach, really big thighs, big legs, big arms, etc. i follow this girl (http://afatfox.tumblr.com/tagged/fatshion/) on tumblr and i think she's gorgeous but you would never see her body type in regular magazines or else people get all concern troll-y and project their self-hatred onto someone else
