Who will become the next Suzy?
According to No Cut News, although many male idol singers have been appearing in dramas, actresses are the ones that have played the main characters in dramas. However, many broadcast companies have seen potential in female idols that they have started supporting them by giving them the role of the main character.
A good example of this would be A Pink’s Jung Eun Ji. Jung Eun Ji will be appearing onKBS 2TV’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama, “Trot Lovers” as one of the main characters.
Jung Eun Ji debuted as an actress in 2012 through tvN’s drama, “Reply 1997.” At the time, she gained popularity through her use of dialect and playing the part of the bubbly, female student.
However, she did have her downfall. After the success of “Reply 1997,” she appeared inSBS’s popular drama, “That Winter, the Wind Blows,” but many viewers expressed that her acting was awkward for not using any dialect. That’s why, “Trot Lovers” will be the drama where Jung Eun Ji will be re-evaluated as an “acting dol.”
Secret’s Han Sun Hwa and SISTAR’s Dasom are not that far behind from Jung Eun Ji.
Han Sun Hwa appeared in SBS’s “God’s Gift-14 Days,” making her known as an “acting dol.” The unexpected transformation of Han Sun Hwa is the result from appearing in this drama.
Dasom appeared in KBS 1TV’s “Melody of Love,” which ended not too long ago. This was her first time playing the lead character and she was able to show her stable acting abilities. Despite of the fact that several viewers said her facial expressions were awkward, through her acting, the viewer ratings went over 20% until the end of the drama.
Many female idol singers have tried acting, but there’s only a handful of “acting dols” who appeared in a drama as the lead. miss A’s Suzy, IU, and Girls’ Generation’s YoonA have risen to the status of acting a lead character.
For that reason, Jung Eun Ji, Han Sun Hwa, and Dasom are playing an important role for the broadcasting companies who are short on casting actresses in their 20s.
However, there are negative opinions regarding idols acting in dramas.
The Cultural Critic, Ha Jae Geun, did a phone interview with CBS No Cut News and explained that, “There really aren’t any eye-popping actresses and that’s why people are saying that broadcasting companies are going through a ‘20s actress famine.’ That’s why we need rookie actresses. Since idols are becoming popular as an actor, many are casting rookie actresses from female idol groups. If they were to cast idols who are already popular, then it will become a big issue in the beginning; it helps with promoting the drama and selling the copyrights internationally.”
He continued on by saying, “However, if broadcast companies use idol singers just for their popularity and not train them to become better actors, then that’s not good. I’m worried that the drama’s standards and an actor’s acting abilities will become lower.”Source: soompi
Sorry mods, I put the Miss A tag instead of Suzy. Man, I hate when articles try and compare other female idols to Suzy or some other super popular person because than all the pressed stans come out. I agree about training the idol-actors though. There are very few people that all of a sudden start acting late in life and are naturally good at it.

Date: 2014-06-22 04:32 pm (UTC)but suzy is more of an it girl, she's more known for her beauty/charm, so i feel out of these three none of them will achieve what suzy has.

Date: 2014-06-22 04:45 pm (UTC)Acting-wise Suzy's strange because all the charm and personality she has on shows kind of vanishes, but hasn't she been steadily improving? I have nothing to say about the others except Eunji -- I can't tell if she's actually that good an actress or if her role in Reply 1997 was just well-suited for her. The drama hit it hugely too, so that helped her perception. IDK, I do think she's better than Suzy currently, but her upcoming roles will probably solidify where she is.

Date: 2014-06-22 04:59 pm (UTC)none of these girls will ever reach Suzy's status as an it girl. That stuff usually happens right away and if it hasn't happened so far, it probably never will.

Date: 2014-06-22 05:28 pm (UTC)As for Eunji....it takes a base line level of talent to be able to even play yourself on screen that well, because some actors can't even manage that, look at Taecyeon. I was wondering if she'd trip herself up in That Winter The Wind Blows, but she did pretty well there and held her own with Jo In Sung too- she has a far more natural screen presence, and charisma in spades, all she lacked was typical leading lady looks. Her group picking up popularity recently is the best thing that could have happened for her as an actress because it finally means she gets her shot at leads in network tv for real. And if Trot Lovers does well, it's a bonus for her.

Date: 2014-06-22 05:43 pm (UTC)I hate this excuse tbh, there is no lack of talent among the non-idol actresses in that age group, but they're just not getting cast in anything mainstream if they're not already known as child actresses , simply because production houses prefer to go for idols instead irrespective of skill. Which is not a problem when the idols can act (IU, Eunji), but when they can't.........I mean, come the fuck on, you cannot tell me Jung So-min, Lee Yubi, Kim Ji-won, Kang Sora, Ha Yeon-soo etc. lack beauty or acting talent compared to some people who've scored major roles (not counting Jin Seyeon because it's a mystery how she keeps landing 'main love interest' roles when she sucks at acting and has a habit of booking herself out of a drama for a fresh one in the middle of live shoots i.e. unprofessional as fuck)
There was actually another article on netizenbuzz talking about how hard it's become for agencies to even get a rookie actor an audition these days if they're not an idol. If there's a 'famine' among 20something actresses, maybe these idiots saying it should look at just who is being given the opportunities that would otherwise go to them, and whether it's justified.

Date: 2014-06-22 06:04 pm (UTC)people seem to be set on their own opinions and forget that people actually love watching suzy, and not just because she is ~it girl suzy~ and pretty, but because they genuinely like her acting and watching her, as she chooses great projects, and her acting projects all of faired incredible well in both popularity and critical acceptance, movie and tv, and that also sold very well nationally and internationally (for example GFB commercial slots were quickly sold for cash with very high prices), as well working with big names in the industry, not only that, top billing with them and getting praised by them, things that none of the other girls ever got close to.
acting wise, yes she is not one of the most talented out there, and she has a long way to go, but she is nowhere bad as people claim to be, and with the proper coaching she gets to shine. what hurts her the most is the fact that she never got acting classes during her training period, and now because of her schedule she only gets to practice when working, so sadly she is not evolving as much, but during each project she is growing as an actress and improving, that is evident. plus on what she lacks in acting she makes up with on screen charisma and presence, as well chemistry with all of her co-stars, male and female.
now about the other girls, eunji has the biggest chance of hitting it big, especially because she has a raw talent in acting and a great charm. however i find it incredibly frustrating that some people claim her to be the best idol actress out there and whatnot, when she hasn't proved herself to be that, in both material chosen and performance given. she was great in reply, but the character wasn't that different of her real self or needed to showcase a large range of emotions, her TTWB character was minimal, and awfully similar like her reply one, and her trot lovers character seems to be the same as her as well, so her company seems to be type casting her already with the same brand of characters (something that loen seems to be doing with iu and cube seems to want to make her iu 2.0 acting wise). for me she still has to explore different characters and showcase more complex emotions before getting all the rave, but i do see a very promising acting career in front of her, in fact she is one of the only girl idols that i can see having a successful career in acting.
sunhwa is... not as bad as she used to be, which was painful, but to me she doesn't really sell her characters, i still see sunhwa in them, but she is steadily improving, but i don't see her becoming a leading actress so soon.
dasom... i won't talk anything about her because i am choosing the 'if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all' way of being around dasom and her acting.
talking about idol actresses, it frustrates me how uee's star has dimmed because of pledis sabotage, to me she is the best idol actress out there, she mixes pure talent with passion for learning more of it, she really dedicates herself to acting and could be much bigger if pledis wasn't holding her back and started to 'bury' her now that she plans to graduate soon.

Date: 2014-06-22 06:35 pm (UTC)But Uee.....she has potential and can do better. Golden Rainbow was a terrible choice but to be fair to Pledis/her, a drama with Jung Il-woo probably looked like a good idea when they started, and they definitely had good enough chemistry to make the drama's otherwise painful makjang bearable. And then the writers went and screwed over that couple too. I can't say she's the most talented of her generation, but she has a type that she's very good at playing and I appreciate that at the start of her career she wasn't afraid to take on supporting roles and mean girl roles even. Though that could just be lack of agency power, and they're not doing so well by her now.

Date: 2014-06-22 06:27 pm (UTC)Sunhwa showed potential in God's Gift, now it kinda depends on her next project and how TS will promote her.
Dasom...nope. She's pretty but naaah.
But let's not forget Sooyoung and Uee. Uee doesn't really seem like an idol anymore, she's transitioning into a real actress and Sooyoung is still a bit green but she showed good comedic timing in Cyrano.
But good lord, why can't they cast Lee Yubi, Ha Yeon Soo or Kim Jiwon, Han Groo? And how about Lee Yeon Hee or Min Hyorin?

Date: 2014-06-22 06:47 pm (UTC)I would die if Lee Yubi got a drama lead for real, she, KJW, HYS and Han Groo are so talented. Han Groo is getting a lead role soon with Yeon Woo-jin but on cable. It's a shame that MBC, KBS and SBS - the real mainstream broadcasters - don't take a chance on them.
