First person up for spotlighting is May J Lee who I've just discovered today and am blown away by. She's hard-hitting and femme but has a universal musicality--you'll see both guys and girls in her videos. This is important as I've felt that choreography for girl groups vs. boy groups is extremely different; gendered even. You could hire her for any group.

I've been sort of wanting to do a series for Omona for a while but didn't know what I could really contribute (besides my sporadic 'NEW MUSIC?!' posts, lol). In light of the whole Kyle Hanagami/A-Pink incident (and others like it), I think I found something I'd like to do. Basically, I'm going to spotlight a Korean choreographer (based in Korea) and bring to ya'll some of the talent that is going seemingly untapped over there...at least by the entertainment industry. I'm a dancer who watches way too many dance videos anyway so, you know...always nice to share!

I envy any person who can dance. I have two left feet and I'm stiff as a tree. I wish I can dance even a quarter good like this. XD

I know what you mean. Girl groups are stuck with these 'bend me over, touch my breast' steps / routines. They have been confined to these that they lose that one aspect of being a performer that they can definitely gain interest with. Sometimes, my father would see me watching girl group performances and his comment would always be that they all have the same dance. I know that idols would always have to take into consideration the song material that they'd be releasing in completing their choreography, but I just wish girl groups were given more chance to 'man' up their performances and not just be stuck with these cutesy moves.

My sis always says that. She says that the girls get screwed because they're never able to actually dance. Weren't F(x) and Miss A meant to be dance groups, like that went haywire. I'd love for female groups to be given choreo that is effective and isn't posing or booty poses. Though I think Soshi get great choreo now and then, like I got a Boy and The Boys was fairly good.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think that. It seems that no matter what concept a girl group has their choreography will be more or less the same--more posing than dancing. It'd be great to see more variety on stage in actual MVs outside of some special stage where it's 1 or 2 members doing something like a basic pop & lock which is all good, lol, but we can expand on that further, too.

When it comes to good/interesting choreo, I can only think of Glam. I think GP Basic's last comeback also strayed from the norm of girl group dances.

How long have I been saying this? Girl groups get the short end of the stick when it comes to dances. Its kind of one of the reason that I'm not totally into girl groups like that. Like there are those whose songs I like and have on my ipod. But I don't really pay that much attention too. Whenever a new gg comes out I am always hoping for some beastly dancing and I get....well nothing. But I am still holding on to the hope of some day a girl group that shits on everyone with their dancing comes to light. a la 8 flavas/Beat Freaks.

Right. It's really sad there hasn't been one yet. Every time some company says their girl group doesn't have a sexy concept I pray.

I love her choreography and style so much, thank you for posting this! I'm really looking forward to this series.

I feel like girl groups aren't really picked for their dancing skills. They're more focused on the appearance and vocal talent, and it really limits the range of choreography for their songs. It also doesn't help that most girl groups produce more generic, cutesy/"sexy" choreography instead of focusing on what moves one can use to connect the choreo to the music.

I think her and BoA should work together in the future (SM pls)

One of the nice things is that a lot of choreographers work at one or two of the same studios so you find one and then you find 5 more, lol, so I have a bunch of names already. I'm thinking I will do this once a month switching between girls and guys (so next month would be a male choreographer) for as long as I can. I'll check out Lia Kim and add her :D
