Watching it again for the first time in forever, he didn't call her ugly at all. It was Shindong who made his comment seem like he was calling her unattractive. IMO what he meant was it's enough to focus on being smart, you don't have to worry about being hot~ too. The look on his face when they started telling him to say "but you're still pretty" was obv that he didn't mean it as anything negative.
But if ppl want to interpret it a different way they are more than welcome to.

Date: 2014-06-12 11:11 pm (UTC)oh is *that* what they were talking about? because i was looking for receipts of shinee being on that show they linked and nothing was to be found. what key said on suju miracle show could be seen as shady, ymmv, but certainly not as cut and dry assholey as they put it. plus as you said, you have to actually watch more of the show than that 10 seconds to get context but w/e. no1curr.

Date: 2014-06-12 04:21 pm (UTC)Like I said this is not cutesy itself and they've never really done 'cutesy' concepts a la Boyfriend anyway. They debuted with a pretty mature R&B sound and not the typical bubblegum pop. Yeah, they used to wear those colorful pastel clothes and stuff but what can you expect if they were 14~18 y/o kids? You can see that now with BTS and GOT7. I prefer young people dressing and behaving cute and youthful than doing sexy concepts and other adult stuff like that new kid on U-Kiss.
Plus, they're still fairly young tbh. Most of SNSD are 89ers (so older than SHINee) and they had IGAB in 2013, Orange Caramel do overly cutesy stuff too and they're in their 20s, A-Pink are mostly in their 20s too, etc etc...Heck, even Eunhyuk&Donghae do youthful concepts in Japan and they're in their late 20s.
Sorry for the rant. I'm just kind of sick of the whole: "you're too old for ____". It's like for some people you have to act like a grandma/grandpa once you're not a teenager anymore.
