The photoshop in that picture with one of them in those red pants is...... Did jessica get more work done because in some photos I can't recognize her. overall I like the shoot!
a lot of people have been saying nose and jaw personally i think she also had her eyes tweaked. she used to have much more prominent eye bags and i think she also evened out her eyelids because she used to have one eye that was bigger/different shape
NYLON: The photos will probably be put into the American ‘Nylon’ magazine. How do you want to appear to the American readers?
JESSICA: I hope we appear pretty and charming. Americans first think about ‘eyes without double-eyelids’ when they think of Asians. I hope we appear, not like those typical Asians, but different.
she phrased the entire thing so wrongly. she's basically implying that asians with monolids are not "pretty and charming". that's my issue with her quote.
cl talked before about how she wants to break stereotypes about asian women, but she did it in a much better way.
"Americans first think about ‘eyes without double-eyelids’ when they think of Asians"
ive met so many people that think like this. when she lived in america she probably met so many people who have been racist towards her and categorised her as "ugly" because of her eyes. i hear many people on a daily basis refer to asians as "ugly ching chongs", "ugly ping pongs" and other racist&offensive terms and when they're asked why they think that, they pretty much always refer to their eyes so this sentence is most likely based off her personal experience and hence why i thought that by itself this sentence was pretty truthful
however with the combination of the rest of the quote, start and ending, it sounds messy af so i agree on the overall implication. i read the whole interview and its so clear that krystal had more training in public speaking so jessica should learn something from her tbh even jessica's quote on cooking was a bit questionable to me
i thought that maybe when she was young she didnt because i was never really interested in her so i never really looked at past photos and considering sm's plastic surgery history i thought she might have gotten surgery on them, i apologize. in that case she might have been speaking from what she heard being said to other people around her, still messy tbh
Haha sorry if I came off aggressive towards you, I didn't mean to Her quote was just rude as fuck especially the I hope we don't appear like those Asians part... So she's saying that there are Asians who do look like that but they are "typical" and she doesn't think they are pretty/charming
lol really The first thing European people say to me, when they meet me for the first time is: "You're pretty tall for an Asian!" Yes, it's also a stereotype, but well...
Mind you, I do have double-eyelids by nature, but I still think that Sica's comment was rude (and she is my ultimate female bias in KPop).
I still can't tell whether she meant she wanted to look different (as in double-eyelids all of that different) or that she wanted to not be thought of with the classic Asian stereotypes.
That sentence totally rubs me the wrong way tbh. It's like she's saying that they consider themselves prettier and more charming for having double-eyelids compared to other Asians with monolids. Rme.
I don't see how she's putting down those with "eyes without double eyelids" though???
I read it as "Americans stereotype Asians as being plain faced, monolid/tiny eyed and stuff but we wanna show them that it's not true and we don't all look the same" or something. She was simply pointing out Americans' skewed vision of what Asians look like, it's just that her wording was awkward.
I hope we appear pretty and charming Why the use of "pretty and charming" then? She just should have said that Americans have the typical "all Asian look the same and have monolid eyes" mentality and that they wanted to show them that not all Asians look the same, but why use the words "pretty and charming" and then saying that they don't look like those Asians. It's like she's clearly implying that people with monolids aren't pretty and charming enough and she feels more attractive only for having double eyelids. That's pretty much the mentality in SK and it's gross tbh.
Because the question asked was "How do you want to appear to the American readers?" and she gave a direct answer to that first before talking about the image that Americans have of Asian. Did you expect her to answer "gross and ugly"?
And like I said, I think she's just awkward with words. The girl is surrounded by Asians people every day of her life, I think she would know that monolids do not equal ugly. It probably sounded fine in her head but she didn't realize that the way it came out could be misunderstood.
I think when she said typical she meant the typical image that Americans have of Asians aka the word she was looking for really was stereotypical. Because let's face it, we all have a tendency to have an image of what the "typical" mexican, irish, cambodian, italian, indian, haitian, etc, look like, even if we don't mean to stereotype.
LOL, but Americans don't know the difference between single and double eyelids. The stupid Asian eye pose are aimed at Asians with double eyelids as well.
