It looks like the dark charisma of JYJ‘s Kim Junsu that we have seen in last year’s “Elisabeth” will be back as the singer and musical actor will return to the stage this July as he plays the lead in the local production of “Dracula.”
According to DongA.com‘s interview with a representative from the production, Kim Junsu has decided on appearing in the musical and specific details regarding the production are still being discussed.
Kim Junsu’s agency, C-JeS Entertainment, has carefully confirmed the statement saying, “He received the offer to appear in the musical ‘Dracula’ and we are currently examining the material positively.”
Kim Junsu will play the role of “Count Dracula” who has loved only one woman for a thousand years. His character bears the pain and sadness of unrequited love. The two are fated to be star-crossed lovers, with Count Dracula destined to live forever, he protects his loved one from dying and is endlessly conflicted with his thirst for blood.
The musical, which will be produced by Shin Choon Soo and directed by David Swan, is based on the gothic novel of the same name by Bram Stoker. The musical “Dracula” made its world premiere in 2001 at the La Jolla Playhouse and made its way to Broadway by 2004.
It has since made the rounds of various theaters in Sweden, Austria, England, Canada, and Japan.
The local production of “Dracula” will open this July at the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera Theater.
Note: an excerpt from an article about Musical Dracula.
A person concerned with musical Dracula said, “Staff needed an actor who can break from the previous dark, frightening vampire and can act as a romantic Dracula who has kept his love for only one woman. It’s because this musical piece needs a new approach to the main character and story, like Jekyll & Hyde (in Korean version). In order to find an actor best suitable for this character, we saw many other musical performances, and, eventually, we came to the conclusion that Kim Junsu is the best.”
Shin Chun-Su, a producer of OD Musical Company, said, “By casting Kim Junsu, we’re able to show the ‘attractive and romantic Dracula’ that we wanted to express. When watching Kim Junsu’s previous musicals, I thought ‘How about drawing and showing his yet-to-be-shown, tough and masculine part, with his beautiful voice?’
“I believe, through this musical, Kim Junsu can make his another irresistible charm. In the future, musical Dracula must be one of the his representative musical pieces,” he said.
JYJ Kim Junsu knocked down ticket sales sites’ servers when ‘Dracula’ the musical ticket open and sold out all of the seats for his performances.
On May 15, C-JeS Entertainment disclosed, “Kim Junsu established the ticket myth beyond ticket power. He made all of his performances sell out within 30 minutes in ‘Dracula’ the musical’s 1st round of ticket open and has proven his ticket power once again. Furthermore, not only did tickets sell out but when the sale began, there was a ticket war where the ticket window was paralyzed for while from 2 pm KST on May 15; climbing up in each portal sites’ search word; and etc.”
As soon as ‘Dracula’ the musical’s ticket vendors: Interpark, Seoul Arts Center Ticket, Auction, Clip Service, Open Review, Yes24 sites opened at 2 pm KST, there appeared the strange phenomenon where servers for main ticket reservations went down swamped by simultaneous log-ins; Kim Junsu, ‘Dracula’, and ticket vendors’ names occupied main portal sites’ real-time search words online; and it showed Kim Junsu’s untouched, far-reaching power.
An official of the main ticket vendors stated, “Considering Kim Junsu’s ticket power, it was divided among 6 ticket vendors but the situation broke out where you were unable to find a seat trying to click on the remaining seats; while the main ticket vendor’s server got paralyzed, too.”
Interest in Kim Junsu’s first Broadway musical and the Korean premiere of ‘Dracula’ the musical emerged as one of summer’s most-anticipated productions in a breath as soon as the casting of Kim Junsu was confirmed. ‘Dracula’ is the original musical by the same name of Irish novelist Bram Stoker’s novel ‘Dracula’ and has been raising expectations for the meeting of Frank Wildhorn and director David Swan.
Meanwhile ‘Dracula’ the musical will be presented at Seoul Arts Center’s Opera House in Seocho-gu, Seoul from July 17 to September 5 through 2 preview sessions (on July 15 & 16).
