'SM restricted basic human rights rights of EXO-M leader Kris'

Kris, a Chinese member of boy band EXO-M, has had financial difficulties despite his tremendous workload because SM Entertainment exploited him financially, Yonhap reported on Thursday.

“SM (Entertainment) controlled him like a pawn or a control-target rather than offering him opportunities as a celebrity,” an undisclosed source close to Kris told Yonhap.

“SM has claimed an absolute authority in decision making for all of his performances, events and activities,” the source added.

The clash between Kris and his agency surfaced as Kris on Thursday filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment, demanding a cancellation of their exclusive contract.

“Over the distribution of profit, SM only showed him a self-made bill without any further detailed explanation. … This forced (him) into constant financial difficulties despite an overload of work and activities,” the source was cited as saying.

“We insist that SM has abused its superior authority over Kris to exploit him,” the source claimed, calling Kris’ exclusive contract with SM invalid because the contract it overly limits his basic human rights.

SM Entertainment stated that it was “extremely perplexed,” Yonhap reported.

“We are looking into the facts at the moment but we will do our best to keep EXO’s activities on track,” the agency added.

SM Entertainment was not immediately available for comments.

I don't actively stan EXO, but if there was someone I'd consider a fave it would be Kris. This whole thing is pretty fucked up and I feel for Kris. I hope he'll stay strong throught this whole horrible ordeal.

I'm sad that it's Kris, because he's my favorite, but I'm sadder still that he was treated in such a manner that he felt the need to SUE SM to leave. It's pretty easy to believe SM did him dirty. It's been evident that they're shady since H.O.T. days, not to mention the JYJ/Han Geng lawsuits.

I think kris' upbringing in the west and the fact that he doesn't have to stay in Korea after this influenced this decision. I can't imagine going from a life of relative freedom to one where seniority and rules and crazy discipline are everything. I don't think I can think of one Canadian/American kpop star who seems genuinely happy in the kpop world. Except maybe ailee but I don't really follow her so idk. Sorry if there are typos. Idk, is a big group, of course the agency is going to take all of the decisions themselves, makes no sense to go asking the members one by one what they want plus the company is deciding this stuff for their own good (the company’s and the groups
plus they still kind of rookies, seen how much succes that have had in such a short time it makes sense for SM to want to milk that all they can asap, bet tons of other groups will work 10 times harder for the succes they have kind of easly achive.....(not saying they havent work hard but lets agree they have hit big cause of SM and fairly easly than other groups)
Wonder what loophole they r going to use cause is pretty sure after Hangeng and JYJ SM moste have improve their contracts so they fit the law

tbh i think they only improved the contracts of the older artists who are already established (homin, suju, soshi) since they are SMs cashcow. exo was a rookie group so i think SM gave them one of the slave contracts with no human rights.

SM needs to adopt YG's contract as nobody is suing them 'cause everyone is getting paid (for instance YG artists get paid pretty nice sum of money every time they perform in a music show, while SM artists aren't paid for anything for that sort of promotional activity) and the company is still making profit. Also SM needs to stop forcing their artists to use normal exits instead of celebrity one on airports as nobody likes to get their private parts grabbed and start suing those cray cray sasaeng fans and get better security for heir artists. Also treating your idols as human beings instead of inanimate factory products might help too in evading future lawsuits.

In any case, SM badly needs a new professional CEO who understands how to manage human resources and finances in ethical manner and who is willing to take as his main task the changing of the company culture radically.

Look SM, you can't treat your idols like shit and expect them to take it all! Yes, most of them will, but some will be brave (or stupid) enough to stand up against you and your shady methods.

Also my professor is a human rights professor so he is a big Nelson Mandela stan and he said that Nelson used the human rights law found in the UN Charter of rights against the South African Government.

Tbh I am smh at the EXO fans who feel "betrayed" and are calling him a "traitor". Exo members themselves have every right to feel that way IF he blindsided them with this because he is kind of leaving them hanging.

People need to realize that the common denominator in all these idols leaving SM is SM and that there is something much larger going on here in terms of the company and it obviously isn't just Kris who feels this way.
